My home from January 1974 through August 1978 as a a Reactor Operator, Reactor Technician and Reactor Controls Instructor. I’ll always love and have a high regard for this ship.
@@johnjones5354 ships passing in the night. I still have a hard time with the fact that she has been decommissioned. Many fond memories during my Navy years from 1971 through 1978, and of the four on Enerprise.
I read the entire book on USS enterprise when I was 14 years old. A great ship and then it was manned by 2500 men, the captain travelling inside the ship in jeep etc. Years passed by. In 1974 USS ENTERPRISE became a household name in India when America moved it to the Bay of Be gal to threaten India (a failed mission) while Indian army liberated East Pakistan from Pakistan. First time the world came to know of the capabilities built into the USS Enterprise, the nuclear driven mighty ship. Sad that the ship is decommissioned. It will take 10 years to decommission the entire ship itself shows its mighty build.
She was a cost over run when she was built. Her last refit ended in cost over runs exceeding $326 million. Her dismantling is turning out to be her boldest statement to her past acheivements. They may as well have gutted the power plant and refurbished the ship. She would have been worth another 25 years. Rest well Big E.
She was well over her service life, her hull can't take it. Building more modern carrier than refurbishing her is much more sensible for USN. At least she come back as a Ford-class carrier

I was on the Big E with HS-6 from 81-85. I will never forget when we were coming in from WestPac in 83 and ran aground a mile out from our home pier.
I was there and remember it well shipmates. I also remember a lot of sliders and bug juice!
Awesome.. The Big E came to NZ in the late 60's.. Thanks from NZ 👍🇳🇿

Not as badly rusted as her hull was.

Vince Vago the Keel laying is this year, she should be finished around 2025-27.
It's kinda sad now she sits in New Port News shipyard getting dismantled.
If she was it should be visible from Google Earth. I could find her there a few years ago but not any more.
