- F-Zero 99 surprised me. While it's initial reveal unearthed some skepticism, after diving into the game for myself, I found I was having the most fun I've had with a multiplayer Nintendo game in years, and a lot of that has to do with what I can only assume was the development philosophy; breath new life into a forgotten IP at the source with a bold, focused, and interesting idea. It's important for me to talk about F-Zero 99 not just because it's a good game, but because it embodies the Nintendo I've been missing for years and want to see more of. Hopefully, this is just the beginning!

I never even thought about how smart it was for Nintendo to lower the entree cost for this franchise. I really do hope that this exposes Fzero to a new audience that otherwise wouldn’t be willing to pay $50+ for a full Fzero game.

Simple perfection. Rather than looting, shooting, and running across a map, a single gameplay loop that's perfected is what made nintendo what they are. No wonder a game like this is so good.

F-Zero 99 totally caught me off guard with how much I enjoyed it, it's surprisingly fun and addictive. Feels like there was some real love and care put into this game
I love when you can feel the care and attention to detail in lower profile games. Plus, with such a long legacy, the way this game was approached feels like a celebration of F-Zero.
@@wizawhatAww, it really does! ^^ I love the, like, old comic-book-style presentation of the characters in the tips and Pilot's License sections of the menu and stuff, too, it's charming! ^^
I do like it but it's SO unbalanced. The difference in the amount of boost and power of boost using the Golden Fox compared with EVERY other vehicle is just insane, and it recharges the boost so much faster. Playing the Goose or the FIre stingray just feels awful despite their superior control
I also like they got the rival system from the franchise as well also the fact that you get another sub placing based on the car you drive, like you got 15th place over all but the 3rd highest placed blue falcon, both these things make the game satisfying even if you dont get first i could get 40th but took out all my rivals and feel like i still did good
That's a really good point. Just little design choices that keep players interested even when they aren't getting first place are so good at keeping people playing
Glad to see F-Zero in this form. It may not be the F-Zero we're looking for, but at least it's the game sorely needed to get the series back in the public eye.

Blue Falcon: Shoto
Golden Fox: Zoner
Wild Goose: Grappler
Fire Stingray: Rushdown
I’ve been thinking about how much fighting game DNA is in F-Zero. A bunch of bizarre original characters, each with their own lore and attributes that make them feel very different to play, fast-paced, skill-intensive gameplay, a meter you have to spend to get a leg up on the opponent, a careful balance between offense and defense. Each machine just needs some special moves to make this the car-based fighting game we’ve all been wanting.
I’m so glad Nintendo did this. Just a few weeks prior I started to get interested in F-Zero, since it seemed like Mario kart with a higher skill ceiling and less luck. F-Zero 99 allowed me to really get into F-zero. If the next full game is anything like this one, it’s absolutely taking priority.
F-Zero's nothing like Mario Kart apart from being a racing game, especially when you get into X and GX. GX in particular will completely blow your mind with how insanely fast it is.
F-Zero was also a total sleeper hit for me this year. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Great video!
I honestly have never heard of the F Zero franchise, but you somehow got me so invested in the topic that I watched the entire video through, and now wish I had a switch to play with!
Even though the sequel is being released a year from now, I recommend anyway that if you get a console, that console is the switch. It’s exclusive games far outclass any other console in history.

@@ernestryles then what console bests it? 2017 was carried by Nintendo alone to be the best year for gaming in history. Take one look at all of the 9/10s and higher the switch has and you just can’t find anything better.

I couldn't believe my disappointment when I first saw F-Zero 99, then I tried it and played for hours on my first sitting. I can't wait to play more! And I hope the interest is overwhelming and Nintendo gives us a new F-Zero game.
F-Zero 99 is super duper good, and I’m so glad it turned out the way it did! I’m really hoping it drums up interest in the franchise for more people; it certainly did for me!
Those are my thoughts exactly. Everything this video said was something that I believed after playing F-Zero 99. If Nintendo released a GX port I would have just said ok cool F-Zero fans get a new game... but I would have never picked it up. But with 99 being free I gave it a try and now I'm watching all the UA-cam videos about the different F-Zero games, the characters, and the lore. And now if a new game were to come out I'd most likely buy it. The same thing happened with Super Smash Bros with the additions of Joker and Terry. I would have never played or watched any videos on Persona or Fatal Fury/ KOF before however now I do.
That's the ideal scenario and Just Good Marketing!
I really hope people dont stop playing this game. Id play it for quite a long time, especially if they ever add new cars and tracks from the GBA games
Hell, there are even the BS F-Zero games on the Satellaview to take from. Those games had four additional machines that haven’t been seen since, and this would be a perfect time to add in that content and mix things up.
F-Zero 99 is beautiful and brilliant. I have not had this much fun with a game in so long and it reminds me why I love the F-Zero series so much.
I gotta say, this game is awesome. I've been playing it before bed nearly every night since it came out. I still don't have the grand #1 champ title, but it's still a lot of fun.
When a battle royale game keeps being fun even when it's super tough to win, I think that's how you know you've got a great idea.
I had just gotten my free trial subscription to play a few pokemon tera raids here and there, so I got into F zero just to take a look.
It made me actually get a full year subscription and keep playing it. Its way too much fun.
This year has seen Nintendo remaking/reviving a decent number of their more beloved titles and I'm all for it

It's been a long time since I've played GX, so recency bias may be in effect, but this game truly hits my addiction like no other F-Zero game, even GX.

ive always seen F-Zero and thought "looks cool, maybe someday" because im a big retro game fan but I didnt have these games as a kid. Im digging into them now.
I didnt even really have it that big on my radar until 99 came out, and now, well honestly im just obsessed with F-Zero.

when I saw negative reactions to F-Zero 99's reveal I knew that such people either grew up with GX or nothing and had never tasted blood in F-Zero X's death race mode. I knew it would be a hit even with the strongest detractor.
I really hope it gets a $30 physical release like Tetris 99 did. Live service or not, I just want to have another F-Zero title on my shelves, even if it means it one day becoming nothing but an upscaled SNES F-Zero.
A world with both Mario Kart and F-Zero is a world I've wanted all along.
Thanks for making this. I have not had much experience with the F-Zero franchise so it didn't really feel like I was certain that this game was special. Like maybe F-zero fans truly could have communicated what would be so great about a new F-Zero game. But you can put it into words I only felt while playing. I really love how the 99 series has attempted to evolve the games it's been attached to. Mostly in the philosophy of the game. (maybe not Mario 35 tho). This seems like a bigger step in the next direction for this franchise than a new game with new tracks/music/graphics/assets could have done. And I'm happy this video makes good on correcting launch trailer misjudgments.
I appreciate you discussing the accessibility to reinvigorate interest in the franchise. Also, Nintendo has been clear in the past that they didn't need 2 Mario RPG franchises so Paper Mario took a new direction instead of fading from obscurity like F-Zero has but I can't help but feel that around the same time they made that decision with Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi, they also cut down on F-Zero. Perhaps they didn't see the need to have 2 Arcade Racers on their platform? Anyway, hopefully the level of experimentation will help differentiate the franchises and help F-Zero get something new in the future!
We're in a new era for Nintendo which could be indicative of the effort to revive some old IPs. Obviously that's the case with F-Zero but to your point about the Mario RPGs, I also think its interesting they've chosen to remake both Super Mario RPG and PM Thousand Year Door so closely together. This plan might have been put into motion when Alpha Dream was shut down, but with Mario games loosening restrictions and experimenting more lately, it seems like this Nintendo is more open to trusting fans and experimenting more with their resources

That's because cosmetics are typically either something puchased or obtained via loot box luck, not earned by skill. After I won my first FZ99 grand prix (my hands were shaking on that last lap!), I was proudly rocking the sparkling gold vehicle skin I received as a reward, and it felt GOOD!

even when you do earn something, its just fuckin' lame. they can't actually dare to give you anything cool at risk of you liking it more than the paid options.
you get your first fortnite win and you just get a neat little umbrella, but its not actually all that cool and its kinda gaudy. that little bit of dopamine you get from earning a cool new item is just meant to hook you and make you want to get even cooler items.
hell, that's the point of most battle passes/starter packs: getting your foot in the door. with a battle pass that comes with hundreds of varied cosmetics, extra perks, and *literally pays for itself*; anyone can make the judgement that its a steal for less than the price of a single item shop skin. but you're probably not going to LOVE anything in there, just like it.
...and since you already spent 10$ on stuff you like, what's 12$ on fucking *batman*? or how about 8$ more for his full set? and oh, this skin is awesome too for just 15$! how about this new, even cooler skin! and you gotta have a few emotes... and you can see how someone gets 100$ deep after a few weeks.
the free/cheap stuff doesn't come from the goodness of their hearts, its about getting you invested.
This was also a big part of Halo 3 when it was big. All the armor was earned through player achievements, and the Recon set was the most coveted because prior to Halo 3 ODST the only way to get it was to impress Bungie employees-making awesome content in game or out of game, beating them in a Bungie vs The World event, or otherwise giving them a good reason to give you access to Recon. Even after ODST, Recon still was coveted because the Vidmaster achievements required to get it were quite difficult, and all of them asked you to team up with friends.
This sort of cosmetic progression is awesome, and Bungie just barely scratched the surface of what could be done with such a system. Imagine unlocking specific cosmetics for having a certain milestone of people download content from your file share? Or perhaps connecting your account with a social media account and unlocking something cool for getting a certain amount of likes on a game-related post? There could be helmets for people who specialize in sharing Theater clips or making Forge maps. By enticing players with these cool cosmetics, you have people share stuff about your game, which is free advertising for anyone else who has not gotten the game yet, which further generates buzz.
Ahhhhh! This is almost as good as take your [pet] to work day. And that Starfox. Yes. Big yes.

Well, this was lovely. It's refreshing to finally see a modern extension of a classic game with worthwhile added gameplay elements, something I wish we would see more of on modern hardware. Online play also actually works well here to add depth to the classic gameplay mechanics.
After playing F-Zero 99, if the next F-Zero doesn't have another battle royale grand prix, I'll actually be disappointed.
God I wish they add other maps to race on. If they could pick from the gba maps and start bringing them back that would be amazing. New courses to master would be great for newer players and masters who already have 99+ wins.
Video so good I literally got tunnel vision watching. I just love how well received this game is because when it was first announced, it felt like I was the only one who was hyped for it.

I didn’t grow up with F Zero. I’ve tried the main three in my late teens/early 20s and they just didn’t click with me. I also haven’t been able to get into any of the 99 games, despite me loving the source game for all three. Yet I adore F Zero 99. I’ve also long been hoping for shorter, focused experiences built around a tight gameplay loop, and this is just hitting every single box for me. I am hooked
If it hadn't been named Prime, but "A Prime series Game" instead, people likely would have loved Fed Force. Okay, maybe not, loved is a strong word. It had a very goofy atmosphere obviously non-canon elements, but stick in obvious foreshadowing that events are being spun out of proportion for propaganda purposes, similar to Starship Troopers, and everything would have been perfect.

(PS: As much as I reviled Other M, it could have been handled similarly, with hints that Samus's account was being spun out further from the original events by a rebel faction to politically attack their galaxy's military centric authoritarian government. Maybe it could have even ended with the screen being televised off a hologram, with actual Samus giving it a disparaging remark to its swayed credibility? Then again, people would likely make memes of Samus being a snarky critic on the level of Zero Punctuation... Other M really was created in the style of Parasite Eve II, if it had the feel of Third Birthday, which Sakamoto likely played...)

I know it’s going to end eventually; that is inevitable, but I hope it isn’t for a long long time, because this game is phenomenal. It just needs parties for playing with friends. I would also love a game mode with even more combat focus, where it’s a single race that doesn’t end until there is only 1 person left. The recharge strip either wouldn’t be functional or it would give you much less energy. Maybe 5-10 racers would be ranked out each lap at the start, and by the end, only 1 racer per lap. This would be chaotic carnage, and I would love it.
I love that idea, hopefully the game has enough longevity for something brand new like that to be implemented!
I am an F-Zero fan since 2003 and lemme tell you; when I saw the reveal of F-Zero 99, I was astonished about the fact Nintendo actually made a 99 thing of F-Zero!
I was so happy with it, but I am not gonna lie that I also felt anger towards certain influencers!
It's funny to see certain big youtubers covering F-Zero 99 and have meta tutorials in today's UA-cam; even sparks new interest into the franchise!
HOWEVER, I also lost some respect for others who thinks what we, as F-Zero fans, wants and that is a big no no! Hungrybox is one beloved Smash influencer, but he dropped the ball SO hard with this! He dismissed the hype as soon he saw the 99 title come up and that pissed me off to no end!
That you are a big influencer in the gaming community is one thing, but NEVER speak for a community you are not even part of! EVER! He has no idea this can snowball into something bigger for us F-Zero fans and he, being the smart influencer (most of the time), didn't realise and that is how you lose respect with me!
I want this to work and to let Nintendo know this franchise is not a meme! We do mean it! We want more F-Zero and with the many franchises came before it who were revived and sparked itself into bigger franchises, there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO excuse not to make this work!
I mean, the last thing I need is another competitive on going game to add to my free time. But I did love F-Zero on the SNES growing up, and this looks fun as hell.

This was one of the most smart moves Nintendo ever did for both it's Online Services and F-Zero. I can see too much potential in this game, they must include Satellaview and Game Boy Advance content.
I just played this after watching the video. It really is great! I’m surprised there’s been so little hype about it.
I have played this game every day since the day it came out. It became my ultimate cozy game that when I just wanna play a game.

I agree that F-Zero 99 is great, even though I've only watched my brother play it once. I wonder what you're thoughts are on Nintendo closing their online servers for Wii U/3DS?
While its an inevitability, it's still extremely disappointing. There are a lot of great games requiring online for the best experience on Wii U, but perhaps even moreso on 3DS! This happens with every generation since online play became a thing, but it still sucks especially considering this was really the first BIG online effort from Nintendo. Entire games like Zelda Triforce Heroes and Metroid Prime Federation Force were built around online co-op, and I don't see those games being ported from the 3DS anytime soon.

I still have significant concerns about this. It very well could be Nintendo testing the waters for F-Zero. But the evidence continues to point towards Nintendo making excuses not to make a new main-series F-Zero game, and that they're likely going to use F-Zero 99 _as_ another excuse not to make another main title in the franchise. They've previously cited everything from "people lost interest" (half-truth, people didn't like GP Legend or the anime it tied into, but GX was hurt by its platform's poor sales and Climax got completely fucked over by being released literally one month before the DS) to "we can't think of any new mechanic" (possibly true but previously proven to be a moot issue), to "we don't want to release another racing game alongside Mario Kart" (faulty premise, the only similarity between F-Zero and Mario Kart is that they're racing games, they're in completely different categories of racing games), and now they'll probably start saying things along the lines of "F-Zero 99 _was_ our big release for F-Zero, you're just being ungrateful".
Don't get me wrong. On its own, F-Zero 99 was a good idea from a business perspective and, apart from some netcode bullshit (which comes with the territory of it being a Nintendo game) it's very well executed. I'm just concerned that this game isn't so much testing the market as it is a relatively low-effort attempt to be able to say "we finally made a new F-Zero for you, now shut up".
It's why I advocate for them to follow up with a more rich F-Zero game soon, so that F-Zero 99 doesn't seem like a one-and-done.
All the previous F-Zero blunders happened ten to twenty years ago and this is a very different Nintendo we're looking at today. I don't see any evidence suggesting Nintendo is trying to shut people up about F-Zero, quite the opposite actually. If there really was this grand conspiracy to kill the series, they would release a mediocre game at full price and internally justify its failure with lack of interest. That's just not how Nintendo operates.
The truth is, all of the choices I discussed in this video indicates they want to get more people interested in F-Zero. Battle Royale games are content farms for content creators, which in turn is great marketing for the series. As such, more people are playing and talking about F-Zero now than EVER because of F-Zero 99 which in turn increases demand for a new entry. A new game may not be a TOP priority right now but they're much closer to acting on this momentum than they ever were in the Wii and Wii U eras.

It's not a "grand conspiracy to kill the series", you're reading too much into my comment.
My point is simply that Nintendo has shown zero interest in continuing the main series, and that I don't believe that F-Zero 99 is actually going to change anything.
If F-Zero 99 came out maybe a decade ago, then I'd be more hopeful. Obviously it wouldn't have since the concept of Battle Royale games was still in its infancy, but my point is that after being catfished for over two decades at this point, Nintendo's going to have to show the goods if they want to earn my trust back. "Close" only matters with horseshoes and hand grenades.
I thought it was fun unlocking skins.

I like this video because I agree that F-Zero 99 rules but I disagree with the premise. As soon as I saw F-Zero 99, I thought it was a great idea, especially because it used the classic artstyle. I wish Nintendo would do more interesting things with their less technologically advanced games. I would love a game like SNES Remix or the like. Some of that is that I'm in my 40s and love older games along with the new ones, but a lot of people are my age and are ready for more things like this.

Apparently fzero 99 is using the odyssey engine so it’s more of an hd2d remake than it is an emulated game
I really hope that Nintendo continues past what they planned, and add content from BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2. 4 more cars would exlode the meta, and 10 more courses would help too!

Backed Aero for the cause & support due to lack of F-Zero, Told off by dev that I shouldn't.
Played the demo that needed fixing to get it to work; since it was pulled from Steam & that broke it. Was left disappointed; "it's not F-Zero X". Couldn't get into it. Told demo not full representation; incomplete. Wait for Kickstarter Backer in least Sept/Oct '23....which is now...nothing...
Learn it's going to Steam Greenlight Access for all in March '24. Still waiting to even try a touch of the "Completed Alpha" & ask for least a launch timer for Kickstarter Alpha--get eye rolls & annoyed comments from everyone & dev silence. Feel scammed man.
F-Zero 99 comes out & aside from the broken Golden Fox Meta ruining the fun--more fun then I had not playing F-Zero for years & Aero's Demo Disaster. At this point; Ignore all false prophets & preachers--LONG LIVE F-ZERO.

There's something really funny about the Golden Fox going from the arguable worst vehicle in the OG F-ZERO to the meta in 99.
I think it could do you well to be a little more patient with a small dev team! Game development has a long timeline and unforeseen challenges pop up all the time, especially for someone creating a game without a publisher or other safety nets.
all they need for brand new f-zero is copy f-zero gx/ax exactly update physics a little new graphics wider and new tracks more racers add multiplayer with gp modes/random single races like f-zero 99 also some more indepth multiplayer. DO NOT ADD RANDOM POWER UPS MARIO KART STYLE THIS IS F-ZERO!

It's boring. It's so chaotic that there's nothing that makes it feel different than playing bots.
It's good but is it better than gx? I mean it kinda is because it has online and is built around but it is kinda cheating in a way. Well... I hope nintendo get the memo and make a 3d f-zero gx (or 3d game in general) online, though considering their experience with online, perhaps it is better that they remain on simpler engine.

F zero 99 is shovelware. They should have made a proper game
10:46 That guy cheats btw, he played his matches at the end of a grand prix all the time so he can grind out cpu cars while suspiciously having more boost than other players without knocking out cars. Thankfully it seems he quit after that one week.
Is there any proof of that? Or just a baseless accusation. Because I've seen him in plenty of my games and he was posting a lot of clips on twitter at the time.
