    1. GoldenEye - my personal favorite of the franchise.
    2. The World Is Not Enough - if Christmas Jones was recast and the showdown with Renard was better, this would be almost perfect to me.
    3. Tomorrow Never Dies - it's just a lot of fun.
    4. Die Another Day - my guilty pleasure.

    1. GOLDENEYE - My first theatrical and live exposure to Bond inspired by one of the greatest N64 games of all time.
    2. WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH - One of the best bang for your buck bond movies. Impressive and thrilling pre-title sequence.
    3. DIE ANOTHER DAY - Great ideas and stellar blockbuster action combined with laughable cringeworthy moments.
    4. TOMORROW NEVER DIES - A solid above average bond but just never fires on all cylinders for me so I don't rewatch it often.
Pierce did a great job. I will always have a special place in my heart for this era of Bond.

Aside from the few CGI segments and Halley Barry's acting (I think she has a great look in it). I love Die Another Day. I'd much prefer a campier Bond film than one that tries to take itself too seriously as the Craig films do. But a nice balance in between camp and serious is goldeneye and it's the best way to go when making a Bond film. Also i'm all for cloaking cars. But I guess i'm apart of that video game market.

Well done Joe - I agree with your ratings and scores pretty much. I think the Brosnan movies are the hardest to rank because the 80s seems a long time ago, Casino Royale is now a decade and a half old....and the era in between doesn't seem that long ago and yet the technology, expectations and the world around us have changed so much. In many ways Brosnans efforts are old films now but modern enough that its hard to forgive some of the issues. DAD is cringy but at least it brought in a new, younger fanbase and despite its flaws was a huge financial success. My own fav Brosnan is TND as it now seems more believable and current in terms of the villain and his ways.

Ooof. GoldenEye is by far the best. Eric Serra's score is great minus the car race in monte carlo and the end credits. It felt like a much more serious and grounded film akin to the Timothy Dalton tone. The villains were the best in the series. I also cannot agree that Natalya had to be bakini-clad in order to be appealing. It was nice to have a smart girl who was sexy in a more realistic way, rather than objectified

    • @Paul91-
      @Paul91- 3 роки тому +1

I actually like how Natalya doesn't represent your usual bikini clad Bond girl and is dressed down for most of the film. I like this because she feels like your normal everyday person. Unlike Bond girls in the later Brosnan films like Christmas Jones and Jinx who are dolled up bimbos with no character and are just there to be eye candy for 007 to sleep with.

Firstly, I really didn't like Die Another Day, I felt it was totally unrealistic (and I feel Bond should be grounded in realism, otherwise it leaves the audience feeling cheated) and it felt like a generic action film (like Vin Diesel's XXX).
Having said that, I like Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough, because I think they are really stylish films (David Arnold's score and Brosnan really makes me want to be him in those films).
I also agree with you about Goldeneye. I think a lot of people have fondness for it because of nostalgia/N64 reasons. But, don't hate me, I feel it's a bit over rated (find the villains a bit too comical), but that might be because the first Bond film I saw in cinema was TWINE. Then again, I think Goldeneye's a pretty solid film, so don't hate it either.
I know people can be quite divided on what they think about Daniel Craig's tenure compared to Pierce Brosnan's. I think the Daniel Craig films are better made, but I miss the style and fun of the Brosnan ones, so for me, I will always go back to those (other than Die Another Day).

Pierce had all the right qualities as Bond his best films for me are 1.Goldeneye 2.The World Is Not Enough 3.Tomorrow Never Dies and 4.Die Another Day. DAD is going to be last on most peoples lists. You could argue that he was better as Bond in Die Another Day than in Goldeneye but for me he was pretty oven ready when Goldeneye came around and he brought some nice touches to the part as an actor. Agree with something you said about him not being quite the part when Roger retired. Maybe he was a bit too boyish and slight of frame and not quite the man and actor that he was when Goldeneye came about.

I think these ratings are a bit harsh. Goldeneye definitely ranks as #1 for me, but all of Pierce's films are great, even DAD is decent enough, I think it gets some unwarranted criticism. Pierce's movies are heavily influenced by typical 90's action movie structure, and you're right that they have a very consistent good quality about them, they probably have the best action out of all the Bond films. I love Pierce and I think he's the best Bond right behind Sean Connery. Honestly, if I wanted to watch a Bond film that I would have no trouble enjoying, I would watch any of Pierce's films.

Fun ranking video! While I very much enjoyed the Eric Serra score for Goldeneye, your point on having David Arnold score this film probably would have lifted the verve of this installment substantially. Note: I could have sworn I heard Serra's °A Pleasant Drive Through St. Petersburg" during the tank chase when I saw Goldeneye in its original theatrical run, but now It's only the pasted-in generic orchestral piece there in all the home video editions since. Any thoughts or trivia on this?

As someone said about Pierce Brosnan, he's got the look, the humor and cold-hearted nature we expect from our Bond. He used to be my 2nd favorite but fell to third after Daniel Craig and Sean Connery. Unfortunately, I think he had one great film, one dreadful one, one good and a mediocre one. His films are a definite mixed bag for me.
    Here are my rankings:
    1. GoldenEye (9.5/10) The first is definitely the best. It's also my 3rd favorite of the Bond franchise. Great action, great performance by Pierce Brosnan, great Bond girls, interesting villain and substantial script. My only complaint is the theme song, dreadful!!!
    2. The World is Not Enough (8/10) I think Pierce is great, Sophie Marceau is gorgeous and great, one of the more interesting Bond girls, M is great, and the theme song is one of the better ones of the modern Bond era. For those reasons alone, it gets that score. Denise Richards sucks but she's inconsequential. Robert Carlye is not the most interesting villain, but he has not influence on my enjoyment of the film. The script is nothing special but entertaining.
    3. Tomorrow Never Dies (7/10) It's a pretty average Bond. The plot, average. The Bond girls, average. Jonathan Pryce is fun but not my favorite villain. The theme song, forgettable. What's above average for me is the car chase scene in the garage, it's the reason I wanted to see this film.
    4. Die Another Day (-10/10) There have been some turkeys in this franchise, Diamonds Are Forever and Never Say Never Again. But OMG, this one takes the cake! It sucks from start to finish. The plot, stupid! Hey, the 1960s called, they want their script back. The theme song, the worst ever! It doesn't help that I can't stand Madonna or her electronic phase! Halle Berry, oh dear! I'm not fan but her character was lame. The villains, so outdated. Hey, the 1960s called, they want their villains back. I feel so bad for Pierce because he deserved better! Believe it or not, the only scene I liked was when Halle Berry kills Rosmund Pike. That was epic! The rest, a major letdown in every sense of the word! It's a tragic movie!!

    Ranking with Reasons:
    1. Goldeneye (Definitely respectfully disagree with having this one at number 3. This has got to be the most grounded, grittiest, realistic and genuine Brosnan 007 film. It's easily Pierce's best and his only truly great Bond film. Everything in this just works. Except for the Eric Serra score obviously).
    2. Tomorrow Never Dies (Not as bad or terrible as a lot of people make it out to be. Scott was being way too hard on this one by giving it a 3. A pretty underrated film that while I will agree with many is a disappointing follow up to Goldeneye, still has a solid plot, villain etc).
    3. The World is Not Enough (A film that unfortunately suffers from an identity crisis half of the time as I feel that it is a film that doesn't know what it wants itself to be. It can't decide whether it's a super serious and super dramatic update of OHMSS for the modern age that deals with serious subject matter like kidnapping and Stockholm Syndrome or if it's a campy movie with goofy elements like Mr Bullion, Christmas Jones, R, the parahawks, buzzsaw helicopters etc. I find that these choices, that constantly contradict the tone that the film is going for, really hurt the story that it is trying to tell).
    4. Die Another Day (what else can possibly be said about this fucking trainwreck that hasn't already been said? Thank God Casino Royale came after this).

Very interesting list. I didn't see the top 3 playing out like that. TWINE is definitely Brosnan at his best in the role. So much potential with Renard wasted. I find TND through DAD all fall apart in the 2nd half. None of them have solid endings and they just devolve into mindless action. Brosnans filmed also suffered from brutal dialogue in my opinion. I just can't picture. Connery or Craig or Dalton saying a lot of those lines. For me, the trailer or Panama and the thomas crown affair were almost his best Bond movies. Rework those films into Bond and they'd be spectacular.

Talking of 'GoldenEye' i have to totally agree with your opinion of it being ranked lower...has it ever accured to anyone that they were acting totally shameless by literally stealing various elements right out of 'Never say never again' plot which curiously happened to be Eons 1983 competitor at the Box Office...which leaves an even worse taste...the character of Xenia Onatopp is a brazen rip off of Barbara Carreras Fatima Blush, the exploding pen and the whole Monte Carlo location setting as well as the Q jokes are simply being stolen from NSNA which i always considered very poor by any accounts!

Goldeneye #3 I put that one up there with Goldfinger and The Spy Who Loved Me as one of the best Bond films but I guess it's all about what works for you as an individual and a lot of ratings will be based on what you expect from a Bond film and what memories we have connected to each film. I remember enjoying Die Another Day until the CGI Bond which was so bad I nearly walked out of the cinema it took me completely out of the film. If they re edited that maybe it would be watchable. I agree that Pierce was probably at his best as Bond in The World Is Not Enough and it is a cracking film not too behind Goldeneye for me. Tomorrow Never Dies I loved for the David Arnold score and Q scenes. I made the mistake of following the film too closely when it was in production. I remember seeing the still of Pierce outside the car rental shop think I can't wait to see how that scene plays...and it wasn't in the film. The whole thing felt like a series of scenes rather than a coherent movie. After that I've not followed the films too closely while in production because a lot of it spoilers and a lot of it gets your hopes up for something better than the final product. OHMSS great film I can't imagine any other Bond actor in that role for someone who hadn't acted before Lazenby did a great job. I wouldn't give it a 10 because I really don't like the scenes where he's dubbed by George Baker.

Yeah, Goldeneye is my favorite Bond film, tied with OHMSS. GE has my favorite villian, tied favorite henchman, General Oramov is great. Zakovsky is great. Bond and Natalya being interagated by Defense Ministet Mishkin, and Oramov showing up, is so Flemming. Tank chase is so incredible. Tina turnets GE, in my top three theme songs. Casino scene i love. My only blemish is the score, aside from Tank, and Turner. Great pre title. But Bond is up against himself really in Trevelyan. Trevelyan, Bond fight right there with Bond Grant fight as best in series. " Q still up too his old tricks ?, ah, new model, still press here ? "
Rennard was a letdown for me, built up and just so so. TWINE pre title is brilliant. Elektra King is so good. But i like Brosnan more in GE.

I watched " Die Another Day" with one of my brother's step children. He actually really dug it. Laughed at the right times. Loved the locations and was generally really engaged. It's not a very good movie. But it's not bad either. There's always something happening. A fight, a car chase, explosions. It has very well documented flaws. But one thing it is not is boring.

I definitely have to disagree on the notion that a war for ratings isn't a goal for a proper Bond villain. Controlling the media is far dangerous than seizing command of the gold or diamond markets. Unfortunately, Tomorrow Never Dies isn't far removed from the unholy alliance between corporate media and big government. I agree that the story structure is flimsy and the movie inundated with explosions but the concept of the movie is easily more subversive than any Bond film.

Wait for NTTD before ranking Craig's films. It has the potential to upset the cart. My rankings for Pierce.
    1. GoldenEye. I still put this one top because it has a lot going for it. I love that the villain is a former colleague and friend. Great idea. It does seem that it wants to check all the boxes, but given the six year absence, I can understand why.
    2. TWINE. I really like this film. There's intrigue, espionage and romance. Definitely Pierce's toughest and best portrayal. If it had been executed better, would have been a rival to Eyes Only and Daylights.
    3. Tomorrow Never Dies. They bungled the Paris Carver idea. Dare I say it has too much action? It's a fun film, but like Scott it doesn't grab me.
    4. Die Another Day. Need I say anything?

    2. Tomorrow Never Dies
    3. The Word Is Not Enough
    4. Die Another Day
Goldeneye always sits very highly in my rankings for the series as one of my favourites. I admit that there are are better films out there, but it was the first Bond film I saw at the cinema. Movie 2 and 3 are more or less equal . I'm not sure how to rank those. I like them both.
Goldeneye is the best by far. It's easily in my top 5 Bond movies.
And Die another Day is easily among my top 3 worst Bond movies. I wish Pierce could have told the writers to mimme something better, this is just rediculous.

Really good one @Being James Bond! I agree with the rankings. Goldeneye still doesn’t do it for me overall. It’s decent and certainly better than DAD, but rather than a celebration, it seems to attempt to be a meditation about Bond, and it doesn’t work on so many levels to go into in this comment. I do wish Brosnan did one more film. Too bad DIE ANOTHER DAY ultimately wastes his and Berry’s talents.

    2. Die Another Day - Brosnan is at his best here; I actually have fun with this movie (yes, I'm a Moonraker fan)
    3. World is Not Enough - kinda' a dreary, forgettable movie for me, feels small, feels rushed, just isn't much fun
    4. Tomorrow Never Dies - my least favorite Brosnan; generic 90s action movie, Michelle Yoeh feels like she belongs in another genre of movie and has no chemistry with Brosnan, villains are lame, locations are drab, mostly bad sets. I really dislike this movie.

Back in the Remington Steele era when Brosnan was touted as Roger Moore's heir apparent, I thought he was a lightweight. In fact, in correspondence with future Bond author Raymond Benson, he agreed. We both preferred an actor like....Timothy Dalton.
What ultimately changed my mind was Brosnan's performance as a KGB assassin in the 1987 movie The Fourth Protocol. There's a scene where Brosnon is sharply dressed as he enters a sporty car and I thought: "Damn! He really would make a cool James Bond!"
