Just picked up this 105 derailleur and this is the BEST video I've seen on how to easily adjust a derailleur. Thanks for providing such an in depth guide on how it all works. This just saved me an hour of tuning 🤙🏼
just watched your video on installing front mech which I found very useful, I wish I had searched for this video as I had a nightmare with the rear derailleur, finally managing to line up with the correct notch. Your video would have saved me about an hour. thanks keep up the good work
Learning about that bottom lug needing to touch the hanger during installation saved me a massive headache while rebuilding my bike on a trip. Thank you!!!
Excellent video - watching this before I swap out my rear derailleur, I finally understand what needs to be done. Your videos are first class and deserve a much wider audience. Many thanks indeed
Can I say, again, THANK YOU for your vids? You have a vid for all sorts of parts and components, as someone above/below said, you are an absolute lifesaver. Thank you again so much.
Thank you! I've been riding a secondhand CAAD13 105 disc for a few years and noticed some inconsistent shifting. Inspected the RD and the bushing bolt was really loose. Problem solved, right? Nope. After realizing my RD was hitting the chainstay while dropping to small cogs, it occurred to me that it probably wasn't mounted properly to the hanger (as you demonstrated). Bingo! Now it's set like it should've been all along. Cheers!
Good video! I had to figure it out two weeks ago when I got the groupset. Saw your first video on the front derailleur which was a godsend as I was unaware of the markers to line up.
Great video and thank you. I am changing from 5800 derailleur with an 11-28 cassette to R7000 with a 11-34 in the next few days so this is the ideal instruction video :D
Great video, I thought there might be something to do with the remaining cable so I wrapped it around the pinch bolt so that it's pointed away from the cassette and spokes. But I guess the solution is to just trim it really short. I'm also having trouble with the inner links of the chain sticking on the pulley teeth. It seems that either the CN-HG701-11 chain is too narrow or the teeth on the upper jockey wheel are too thick. I'm hoping it will wear in. *Note it seems the chain from Amazon is counterfeit. Going to the LBS tomorrow to see if they have a real one.
It's great that you mention the two stops (lugs) on the rear mech and where to place it but I can find no mention anywhere on the internet as to why. After all, there are two lugs and a range of indicator marks telling me that it could in fact be mounted in a variety of positions between the two. I know that some B-stop screws on some Shimano 105 rear mechs make contact with the hanger stop whereas some (such as this rear mech) do not.
Those lugs were doing my mind in! For some reason I thought they had to go either side if the hanger tip so on my last framei filed the tip of by .5 mm. Shifted ok. Just got a new frame and thought that defo cant be right. Cheers. Kinda counter intuitive to have the derailleur connector going back not down.
Outstanding video and great instructions, thank you 🙏 My 2x gravel bike was struggling to drop into the 11 cog, and a bit hit and miss getting into the 42 tooth as well on occasion - but always dropped into the 11 noisily once I was pedalling hard - what a pain in the ass it was to nail down until I found this vid. Both the H and L limit screws had been set quite conservatively 🙄 and once I watched this carefully 👀 and then turned each of them 1/2 a turn in the right directions - peace was restored - 👍😃😃
Did mine today but I just took the bottom jockey wheel out of the derailleur instead of breaking the chain as I couldn't be bothered. My gear cable rusted, split and blocked the outer cable casing also. My local dealer selling cheap crap cables as I bought it only a year or two ago but the previous cable that came with the Raleigh bike lasted over 20 years! So some things were better in the past. Now I've got to go get another cable and casing but I'll still limp into town on the bike (dislike walking) in the smallest front a rear sprockets until I get the parts to get it working again but as the bike breaks I learn new things like there is a b tension screw I'd previously always ignored. It's a messy business though, oil and dirt and crap wise. Easy with a nice new bike on a stand in your case lol.
Brilliant - Clear and precise video with every step explained, Saved me scratching my head and messing something up. Shimano should pay you for this. Any tips on correct chain link counts as you mentioned the new setup may need this changing?
If you are removing your derailleur and putting a new one on, that’s as good a time as any to do the test in the hanger to see if it’s bent or not. Or just replace it altogether while you’ve got it apart.
Perfect up to the point when adjusting the B screw and you say use an Allen key to check the gap, would have made it crystal clear if you’d done it not just said it! Appreciate your time though!
Hi, great video, very helpful. Question for you if that's OK. Gears are changing fine after installing this derailleur, but when on the road and in the small rings at the back the chain seems to get stuck if I stop peddling. (Chain seems to hang down on the top jockey wheel). Any tips? Thanks!!
Great walkthrough on this thanks. There are two lugs on the reverse of the derailleur. Do these go either side of the lug stop on the hanger. No real instructions with the item. Could you clarify please.
Is it possible to adjust H and L bolts after the real derailleur cable has been attached and fixed to its place? Or, only possible to adjust the those bolts - smallest and largest cog screws without the cable attached? If so, could I have done a mistake by screwing the bolts after the cable is attached and the derailleur is "active"? Thank you!
So my derailleur won’t go into the lowest gear but I’ve already turned the barrel all the way back (anti clockwise) and checked the low limiter screw. Do I have to pull more cable through the bolt of the derailleur to add more tension? Or what should I do? Thanks a lot, this video was very straightforward and easy to follow
When fitting the new derailleur i have to adjust the mount so it is not touching the hanger stop so it takes up chain sag on a 11-32 with 50/34 compact is this ok
Hope you're still monitoring this thread. I had to run a new cable to the rear derailleur, used your video the first installation and it worked perfect. This second time I'm trying to adjust the shifting, I can only get the shifter to work up through 6 shifts (clicks). Any idea what I need to adjust to get it to shift through all 11 gears upward?
@@FreeToCycle yes, made sure to do that this time around. I think I just didn't tighten the cable up enough when setting it up. I'll be able to work through it now. Thanks for the reply and for all your videos
How is your 105 performing over the miles? I am encountering an issue with the 1st cable entry/exit angle before the pinch bolt. The cable is gradually wearing into the derailleur body. On other models it seems as though there is a tongue guard, which is omitted on this model and I could not see it installed within your video. Have you had any issues like this? Do you have any suggestions to fix please? I am unable to post URLs here but search for "Shimano RD-R7000 cable cut into thread?" and you should find the exact issue I am having, with pictures! It seems I am not alone
I have a problem with the chain swinging a lot, even falling off the Crown, when it's in the heaviest gear (big chainring and small ratchet) what could it be? The chain is not long, it didn't happen before, it happened after almost 2,000 kms. today I took the cage out of the gear and changed the spring to the other hole to increase the tension of the cage and keep the chain tighter, but I'm still in doubt, I don't know what else to do, could you help me?
Hi, thanks for a great video. Do you know if a 5800 shifter would be compatible with this RD? Both are 11 speed but just don’t know if the indexing for the 5800 is different. Thanks
Thanks for a very clear and informative video. What are your thoughts on the r7000 vs the 5800 front and rear derailleurs? Is there a noticeable improvement? Worth the upgrade or only if old parts are worn...
Hi there, I have a troubleshooting issue. I have this derailleur on a 11-34t cassette. I got a new chain and I'm pretty sure I sized it right (big to big method, making sure it fully engaged on the rear sprocket). However, when I go from the smallest sprocket to the smallest chainring (I don't do use that combination while actually riding) my chain tension becomes non-existent or loose. I'm forced to push my B Screw Tensioner all the way in just to get enough tension for that combination. The other combinations have good tension otherwise. This looks bad because my pulleys end up being really far from the sprockets. Any thoughts on this ?
@@FreeToCycle I've measured it multiple times and seems like it's okay. Could it be that my derailleur's spring tension is not good or working properly ?
Does anyone else have issues removing the back wheel on a disc brake bike after changing to the r7000 ? I switched from rd5800 to r7000, and now my rear wheel won't come off. (I shift into the smallest sproket and the smaller chain ring, and still no dice)

Thanks for a very straightforward guide on installing the rear derailleur
Thank you so much for making this video, saved me a trip to the bike shop!
Brilliant! Saved me after incorrectly positioning the derailleur originally.
Absolutely spot on directions. Very thorough and clearly presented. Thank you so much!
This is awesome! I'm upgrading my bike once all the parts arrive from 10 speed to this 105 11 speed, and these videos are fantastic!
Thanks man! Always the best and most informative. High five from Paris, keep up the amazing work!!

Excellent
Do you have the barrel adjust screwed all the way in to start with or all the out
All the way in then back it out a couple of turns! So just off the bottom.
thanks for the subtitles
Can I use a 11-32 cassette on a 105 R7000 SS cage as my rear road wheel has a 11-30t on it. Or would I need to change the derailleur to GS cage
