Layout Update - February 2022: Athearn SD70ACU, Jordan Spreader Kit Build, Big Bertha Returns...

- What's new on the layout this month:
- Athearn Genesis SD70ACU; CP Military Tribute Army Arid, Navy and Heritage Script paint schemes. If you are interested in the CP Military Tribute units I highly recommend purchasing a copy of Adam Meeks' book "Proud Colours" from the CP webstore. In depth backstory on the project and how it came to be.
- North American Railcar Corporation 5077 cu. ft. box cars. Ordered them and then forgot about them in my Porter's "Goodie Box". Got a bonus Potash car along with the three pack of CP box cars.
- Tree building continues; layout tree count total to date = 586.
- Jordan Spreader "J" series 4-150 Spreader/Ditcher kit building continues; got to about the halfway point with both kits. Really enjoyable build and it was all worth the effort watching them "come alive" with the first coat of paint to the main body and spreader arms. Walkways and hand rails currently being worked on. Used some of my lead weights from my childhood train set to weigh down the oil tank in the spreaders.
If you are interested in these kits email: resinprintedtrains@gmail.com
- HP Designjet 500 "Big Bertha" has returned to the layout. I'm getting close to being ready to start printing the 32' of photo backdrops for the Morant's curve/Bow River/Fairview Road section. Got her a new Costco table to sit on and hopefully improve print quality.
Thanks for watching! - Розваги
As a Train Conductor for Canadian Pacific, I absolutely love your layout you have. Your Laggan Subdivision is really coming along good! Love the new Athearn Genesis SD70ACUs, very realistic, my favorite units when I'm on the ground working. I'm hoping to start a layout here in the near future, there is so much to learn when it comes to model railroading these days - luckily the internet is full of helpful tips and videos! Keep up the good work, looking forward to more of your layout updates and videos!
Thank you very much!
What happened to 7022 today
I've never seen model railways filmed like this, incredible - almost like you're living in that miniature world!
Thank you very much!
2:07 I was wondering why there was a picture of Captain Picard facepalming and then I saw the amazing, advanced coupler-less train xD
: D
Real crafty Foxe I subed to you
Those SD70's just purr on the rails. Nice addition to your layout.
Thanks!
Good morning Ben from a very wet and windy 🌬 England 🏴 Hope you and all your family are safe and well 👍🏻 Not seen any of the boys toys on your layout for a while lol 😆 Those new locomotives are something else 🤩 Great addition to what is becoming a fantastic model railway that’s as good as I’ve ever seen depicting a real place 😀 Well done for all the time and effort you’ve put in and sharing it with the UA-cam family. That 3D printed snow plough will be awesome 👏🏻 and something really different that you won’t see very often on layouts,so it’ll be unique to your layout of Banff 😃 Take care until your next update cheers Stevie 🏴
Morning Stevie! Yeah the kids haven't been that interested in the trains lately. Not as "cool" as the latest apps/games and Lego I guess. Thanks for the comment my friend!
That is pretty cool that you have 2 of the Military Tribute and Script Letter Heritage Athearn Genesis 2.0 SD70ACU's. That is amazing.
Love the Jordan's
Looking good Ben, was nice to catch up last week.
Thanks Nick, it was!
Uh oh, the groundman didn't check the knuckles between the 6th and 7th wells.😄Picard looks miffed. Beautiful layout!
Yep more demerits for myself...
Sweet great channel I don’t know why I just now found it but you have an amazing train layout and great channel👍
Thanks!
Absolutely great reaction at 2:10!
:D
Looking forward to watching Bertha in action.
Thanks Brian. I'll make sure to get some footage of her doing what she does best.
Incredible as always buddy! Cant wait to see this in person again!
Thanks Nathan!
your station scene and cp mainline has totally captured the feel of this area of cdn railroading .. when a model is photgraphed from multiple angles and evry shot tricks the imagination is this real .. you have ventured into pure model building art .. this scene has soul... good job ben its a joy to look at
Thank you!!
Fully agree!!
Am very impressed you got the SD70ACU hope you get the Red version of it as well
Thanks Chris! No red ones, had to draw the line somewhere. Military's and scripts are my favs
@@BArailsystem I agree with that and I saw the video of your station being completed I guess there's lot of work that still needs to be done huh
Ben another great update. Very impressive layout and attention to detail
Thank you!
Thanks for the update Ben. The ACUs look great. -grant
Thanks Grant!
For lead weights just visit your nearest tire shop and ask to get a few pieces of lead from their weight bucket. But look carefully, they use non-lead tire weights these days so just use a small magnet to make sure it’s lead before taking them home. The other option is to go to any scrap metal yard, they have a sorting area where you can find lead, brass, aluminum and other alloys in small batches.
Great update, Ben. The SD70ACUs are beautiful locomotives. Your layout is really coming along and looks excellent! Mike
Thanks Mike!
For me being a fellow Calgarian growing up being an avid train lover, your layout is by far my favourite I’ve ever come across. The detail and accuracy of how you portray CP and the western main line hits so close to home for me. Keep up the exceptional work and look forward to each and every update!
Thank you very much!
Love those Heritage units
Awesome Ben, truly awesome.
Thanks David!
Great panel! Nice update. Like your workbench.
Thanks Syl!
Excellent speed match!
those ACUs look amazing, i gotta get me a few of those
Great Video, very nice layout
Thanks!
Another great update Ben!
Hope you and the family are staying warm!
My warm regards from Texas!
Thanks and appreciate the warm regards! -30°C / -22°F here this week :S
Imagine the fun (and derailments along with damage) that could be had with a Jordan Spreader with the wings controlled by DCC. Everyone would rip up all their track just to re-lay it without gluing down the ballast.
Haha! Yeah, just immaculate ballast profile. I think it would struggle ditching in the foam though : )

Of all the things to admire about the layout Ben, I may be most envious of the printer. Wow. Congrats on the new items. M
Thanks Michael! It's not mine, I just get to borrow it from time to time : )
Wow I just love your layout and videos keep up the good work
Thank you very much!
Love the layout! Great rolling stock!
Thank you!
Your layout look amazing! After seeing those SD70ACU's running on your layout I think we need to get some lol
Thanks!
@@BArailsystem Your very welcome.
Awesome layout!
Thanks!
Excellent review !! Thank you. James.
Thanks!
Awesome update buddy..always love watching your videos..thanks for sharing and keep up the great work..Lance
Thank you Lance!
sweet four wheeler, too!
Oh yeah!
Spreader looks so lonely without snow. would be nice to see one in action. thanks
Unfortunately it will be static display only, the wings will be fixed in place.
wow what an incredible setup!!
Man you have one of the best layout! I have mentioned how much I love your backdrop the first time I watched your videos and that hasn't changed yet. I wish I had the capability to make my own too.. Keep having fun, Chris
Thank you Chris!
Looking amazing like always
Thank you 😊
Very impressive update! I love the Jordan spreaders!
Thanks!
woah you went all out on the SD70ACUs 3 separate ones all in special liveries. They do look good so I can't judge too harshly. :) Happy 2022
Couldn't help it...just love the look of those military tribute units.
Looks fantastic!
Thanks Brock!
Good stuff Ben! Those CPRAIL SD70ACUs look great, I got CPRAIL 7006, man that candy apple red and beaver logo looks sharp on that thing! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Awe yeah those are super nice too but had to draw the line somewhere.
@@BArailsystem I hear ya Ben, would have liked to have gotten the Norfolk Southern version too, but like you said, gotta draw the line somewhere, plus I've got a pair of BNSF 25th anniversary ES44ACs coming soon!
Wow your layout is masterful
Nice video again nice loco and Cars.
Thanks Ger!
Wow, awesome video!
Thanks!
Nice work Ben seeing cp sd70acus on the si I getting model soon miss u buddy
Thanks Taylor
@@BArailsystemyour welcome sure want see u
Awesome my friend
Thanks Chris!
Very nice 👍
Thanks Steven!
Love it!, !
Thanks!!
Great layout update as always! I need to pick me up some of those CP units! I’m still in awe of your new layout and can’t wait to see it finished! Also when do we get to see the man behind this masterpiece of a layout! I think it’s time for a face reveal! Anyways, keep up the great modeling! Looking forward to next months update!
Thanks very much Chad! Haha alright, real personality reveal at 100K subs, face reveal at 1 million :D
Fantastic...my Friend Ben
Many thanks!
Superb
Thank you! Cheers!
That opening shot of the fronts of those diesels was quite impressive.
I hadn’t seen the military tribute videos but those two engines look really, really neat! I’ll have to check it out.
Those 3D kits are amazing as well. Nicely done, nicely done!
Thanks Bill. That was 30X zoom on my camera, really grainy but I thought it looked cool sneaking out between the other trains in staging.
@@BArailsystem - that experiment turned out pretty good. If the lighting had been just a bit more natural, maybe a bit warmer kind of white, it would have looked exactly like a real train leaving a packed yard area.
Ben, beautiful layout. Would you consider doing a tutorial on your updated pine tree making technique or have you done one previously and have a link to it. Thank you.
Hi Jerry, it's on my to-do list but in the meantime I would refer you to Grant and his Southern Alberta Rail. I pretty much copied his technique exactly.

Awesome!

Big horse power units we use in the west
Sweet
Dang those SD70ACU's are something. Makes me wish I had gotten the military units along with 7010.
The spreaders are looking good as well. Will you be making a whole plow train consist for those? Ive seen the set used out of Revelstoke on the vr came and it's a cool train.
Also good luck on the backdrops!
Looking forward to the next video as always.
Thanks. Yeah thats the goal to have the full plow set seen commonly at Banff and Lake Louise in the winter. Plow, spreader, SD40-2, SD40-2, spreader, plow.
Good video! Thanks for mentioning the email to ask about the Jordan spreader its. I have to ask, at 10:50 in the video I see this three well car articulated set with side ribs. I have to ask what manufacturer made these as I see these on CN & NBSR trains all the time and I wonder if there are any in HO scale?
Thanks. Those are made by Atlas, would recommend caution on them though. They do look really nice but are the worst running cars in my fleet. Light as a feather and bad couplers.
2:25 mark, simulated stretch braking. Impressive.
Thanks George! I didn't really think about it like that but I guess that's what the real engineer is doing as he creeps up to the stop signal.
Those lead weights cost nearly $5 30 years ago!! Damn! Adjusted for inflation those same lead weight would cost around 20 bucks today...maybe more.
Haha well to be fair that was Canadian Dollars around 1992 so at 0.78 exchange rate around that time, it would've been around $3.50 USD
Top 👍👍👍
You mentioned you would
link the Jordan Spreader Kit, I would be certainly interested in ordering, if could supply that information
Thank you
You're right, apologies Barry. Added to the video info; resinprintedtrains@gmail.com
Love thoses units togther, I have those and whant to know what cvs you programm for
Beautiful locomotives! Can you tell me please what company makes those model boxcars?
Thanks! North American Rail Car Corporation
Love the new "tank" and "boat". With that new/old feller there too, Egh!
Any way to work in the Stoney Creek bridge in your layout?
BTY, What's the electric bills like?
Thanks Ron. I like that, never heard the nicknames, tank and boat.
My original plan did have a couple versions of the Mountain Sub from KC junction to Rogers but I couldn't make it work and capture the grade separation needed at Rogers without a bunch of complex helix/loops. There was a 10' wall set aside for the Stoney Creek Bridge, but in HO scale, it is MASSIVE, ~7' long.
Electric bills are average, the layout actually uses very little power. The layout lighting is 24V LEDs which hardly use anything.
@BArailsystem with some modelers license, you may be able to get that bridge size down to 5'. I realize that the space could be used for industrial or other destinations.
That's where another level becomes handy.
In any event, great job on the layout and quite a stable on motive power/rolling stock.
Your artistic flare and tech abilities are awesome.
May you and yours enjoy, along with good friends. 👍
Thanks for the update Ben! I am curious, where are you located? I always figured in western Canada, probably Alberta, but now I am curious. I am in Saskatoon and am familiar with the local hobby shops here.
No problem Gregory, thanks! Yep Alberta, but I'm from Saskatchewan originally.
HELLO BEN ITS IS RANDY AND I LIKE VIDEO IS COOL THANKS BEN FRIENDS RANDY
Hi Randy thanks!
Very nice! Where is the Banff station in relation to your layout? I've watched the full trip around cab ride video from about seven months ago but can't seem to spot it. Thanks!
Different layout I think if it was 7 months ago, that would have been my friend's CN Caramat & Kinghorn subdivisions layout. I haven't done the full trip around this layout in a while.
Subscibed to you man
Thanks!
Your Welcome love the scale trains if they are N Scale or HO nice job
I want to know roughly what is your layout worth I know you don't have to tell me but could you give me a base figure about what everything cost you because in my opinion I would say you have close to about a half million there in a layout maybe minimum 300,000 US dollars that is but my first guess is a half a million at least your layout is one of the best layouts I've ever seen in my entire life I've seen other layouts yes but not as detailed as yours you think of every single detail and let me tell you in your videos it really brings that thing to life when I first watched your videos I thought it was real until I started noticing I'm like wait a minute this is a layout I was shocked I thought it was a real late a real trains for I would say a good 20 minutes I was fooled takes great craftsmanship to fool me but you did a plus to your layout man a Plus
Whoa no not that much haha you can email me if you need to know the specifics. I have kept track pretty diligently.
@@BArailsystem your layout is like one of the best layouts I've ever seen and there's a lot of layouts that I've seen in my life I've seen thousands of them ever since I was a kid and I will say out of every single one yours is the most detailed layout I've ever seen you took some dedication to this and I think it's paid off tremendously just like I said I thought your layout was real life at first it totally fooled me and if it fooled me that must be some damn good detailing I watch your videos all the time I know everybody has a life but if you can make more videos I would truly appreciate that
The first set of well cars where are they from where can I find those ones
is there a link to buy one of those printers ?
or just what is it
It's an HP Designjet 500, pretty old. I don't think they make this model anymore. It's essentially a 42'' colour printer.
Is this kit still offered? I would be interested in purchasing one but never got a response from the email linked in the description.
Its just one guy with a 3D printer, he has a day job and everything else so might not be producing any at the moment.
Let me geuss Banff? 10:06
Yep!
What program do you use to print your backdrops?
Corel Draw
is that a Lego supporting that model? (time 6:34)
Yes! 1x2 vent plate. Good eye!
What track is that?
Micro Engineering
2'10" hahaha at least you know the DPU is speed matched correctly
haha yup, bad ordered two cars after this video. In dire need of Kadee #58s.
Beautiful layout I’m jealous I love it check my small size out
damn lol CP must not have clearance points for switches and crossovers lol *joke*
