Dude. Every moment of the day. I wasn't even a Bo fan (just hadn't watched his stuff) when I sat down to watch it and my sub conscious has me unwillingly obsessed lol
I think about it so much. Honestly I didn't even know him and then Netflix recommended it for me and I think it hit me even harder because I hadn't expected to see someone who literally explains my own thoughts hahaha
Not liking the books/music/film that a creator you respect and admire likes is very common (in my experience anyway). I like the way Bo Burnham interprets and presents concepts, but that's a stylistic preference. I like the way he sees things, not necessarily the things themselves. I think it's a reminder as well that the content isn't the creator, and vice versa - you can't fully understand a person by what they put out into the world as it's an amalagamation of so many varying factors. This can be a little strange to experience, especially if you connect so deeply with what they make. Sorry for the essay, I liked this video a lot and it got me a-thinking.
he said in an interview that his parents always wanted to name him bo but named him robert in case he became a doctor, but that obviously backfired lmao so he just went by bo
The execution of this video was absolutely impeccable. Please pat yourself on the back for this. My fiancé and I went on our first date to see Eighth Grade because we were both Bo Burnham fans. Three years later, we saw Inside together in the theater! (After watching it together at home first 😌) Glad to see another person who loves Bo’s outward persona as much as I do 🥰
Shut up the production value of this video is amazing, the recreation of Bo’s special in your different clips was so creative and I just know that it took so much time and energy
I usually don't comment, and I certainly don't watch many videos reacting to/commenting on Bo's stuff since Inside came out, since I find them all either underwhelming or unsatisfying. So, I was fully expecting to click away after 20 seconds of this video, but I was too captivated to do so! You have a great narrative voice, love the aesthetic, and I really think you brought something fresh with this video. Amazing work!
I read so few books that I'm probably legally illiterate, but UA-cam recommended this to me because of my Bo Burnham obsession and this video is so insanely well done and perfectly paced. You have an amazing knack for making videos and your odes to Inside throughout were a joy. Holy shit keep up the amazing work 🤩🙌💞
INSTANT SUBSCRIPTION. I too am a huge fan of Bo's work living in Belgium! AND my name's also Ali! I'm so glad this got recommended, can't wait to discover your channel. Great video! I just think it's important to note Present Shock was first published in 2013 (and based on stuff he wrote earlier in the 2000s), which that alone makes it pretty ahead of its time and could explain (in parts) how chaotic it is in attempting to analyse internet culture (never read it in full either though, the podcast with Bo feels much coherent and easy to follow). the bezos bit was perfect haha
that would change things a bit! my book has: “first published in 2013” printed inside it? but when ya google it it does say 2004. i don’t think this is correct because twitter wasn’t a thing until 2006! regardless! we have so much in common! haha what a small small world.
@@allisonpaiges I just edited my comment! From what i could find it seems to be 2013 indeed, but drawing from articles and columns Rushkoff had written in the early 2000s (there was a famous one in 2004 apparently but not sure which one or which paper it was for). Either way, fascinating topic!
the visual jokes and references to inside are SO GOOD!!! i really love how you fused bo's sketches with your own stuff, i literally screamed when you reviewed your review, it was deep and well-said as well really happy the algorithms led me here :)
Ally this was 👏so 👏 well 👏made. This book video series is such a great idea. The production of this video especially the recreations of shots from Inside, ya nailed em. And i respect the honesty with your perspective on his favorite books. 10/10
damn ya didn’t have to hit us with the acapella “goodbye” at the end lol but seriously this is an awesome video! normally i can’t watch book reviews without stopping halfway and coming back to it later, or just not watching at all, but this video obviously had a lot of effort put into it and it shows!! like i’m very happily subscribing right now! and normally i don’t announce when i subscribe like that but i feel like this deserves more appreciation than just a simple button tap
i just recently subscribed to you and while watching this MASTERPIECE i realized you only have 8k subscribers (literally thought you had like 40k or more)... your videos are literally SO GOOD and you yourself seem like a super cool person! anyway this video was amazing!!
Brief Interviews is a difficult book, mostly because the men are hideous. If you ID with them, are you also hideous? If you dislike it, are you better than the hideous men? But there are some great stories in there, like "Forever Overhead," which, as you noted, influenced Eighth Grade. Burnham has also mentioned Wallace's essay "E unibus plural: television and U.S. fiction," which is in A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again (which also contains the cruise ship essay). You can find it online. Burnham hasn't specifically mentioned Infinite Jest, but I noticed a lot of themes in Inside that parallel IJ.
I absolutely love the execution of this video! Themes and music from Inside really add something special to it! It’s really nice to hear you explain things, the bezos skit made me chuckle ❤️
This is one of the best videos that I've seen on youtube lately. Loved how you explained your own opinions and that anyone can have their own, it always feels like we're supposed to like what everyone else likes, especially if a person we admire likes it. Definitely a new subscriber here!
I rarely watch book reviews on UA-cam and when I do, I skip a lot of the video because it's redundant. BUT NOT THIS TIME! It was really interesting to see how you paid hommage to Inside while reviewing the books. A lot of people just recreated scenes of the special while doing covers or reviews of the special itself, but I found that what you did here was original it its way. I'll check more of your videos! :) (And that part at 3:17... loved it! 😂)
I really enjoyed this video! I love the Inside/Bo theme throughout and your dedication to read those books even though you didn’t like them is appreciated. It’s refreshing to see something on UA-cam that just hits a little different and is also good quality and creative. I’m from the US but my dad lives (and is from) Belgium, so hearing you talk about that was cool too.
let me tell you this video was recomended to me by leena norms and i enjoyed your play and editing so much!! it answers to my soul the same way bo's "inside" did and i deeply appreciate this feeling
after having hundreds of mediocre and pointless bo burnham covers recommended to me watching this video made me really happy because of how actually unique it is.
Haha, this was fantastic! I like videos with extra effort. I will probably check out the books anyway as that Rushkoff interview was really interesting. I'm used to smart people occasionally rambling in books. :D Ah, you can pay licensing for a video with ads? Interesting..... THE INDESCRIBABLE POWERRRR OF YOUR BOOK REVIIEEEWWWWWWWWS
A lot of video essays about Bo Burnham have started appearing in my feed since Inside came out, but this is the one that made me get my chicken hands up 👐
I just found out your channel, thanks to all the cookies I collected while watching Jack Edwards's series of book reading. This is incredible! You made your own INSIDE, yay!
I read "Team Human" by Douglas Rushkoff after listening to his podcast with Bo and I had a lot of the same thoughts that you did. It´s a really good book with interesting and important points but in the end it left me with not many concrete, actual memorable arguments, just a lot of vagueness. But maybe thats just the way his thought process works, I thought it was nice to read anyway. This video was amazing, it´s art criticism, but it´s art itself, which is always the best. I loved all the references and the style! (I am so happy this got recommended to me:))
this entire video is god tier level of entertainment and oh my god, the dfw cruise book, a supposedly fun thing I'll never do again, is really really fun, I agree! I always wanted to read more from him but I guess I'll start from something else now.
I loved this video sm sm sm, there I subscribed before I forget. You know what you coming to terms with not liking the books he liked reminded me of ? It reminded me of an insecurity I have that the friends I have whose mind I really admire and view in high regard only appreciate me because I'm some sort of mirror for their mind to be stimulated, and when I'm talking to them, it isn't truly my words that make them like me but the reflection of their own thoughts in them that make them view my thoughts as more well-thought-out and intelligent than I actually meant them because their mind acts as a magnifying glass, so I kind of always oscillate between being rather happy with my mind and feeling like an idiot sandwich impostor. And I feel like that may be what happened here with these books. I think he may not like them for their intrinsic value but for their worth as a mirror to let him bounce ideas off of them and them giving him food for thought rather than providing the thought itself.
i’ve never seen your channel before, and i am so happy i clicked on this video in my recommended because it’s fantastic! you’ve earned a new subscriber! :)
i loved this so much!! i also struggle with thinking there’s something wrong with me rather than with the material when i don’t like something. this editing & your delivery were done so so well. i hope you get really big on this site :)
It's funny that UA-cam recommended this video to me, because I did in fact read Forever Overhead by David Foster Wallace just a few days ago, after reading in an old AMA on Reddit that it's Bo's favorite short story, and an inspiration for his movie Eighth Grade ! I work at a public library so I ran to get the only copy we have in french (because it's my first language and I wanted to really get everything, since I don't read that much in english), and while I enjoyed this story a lot, I must say, I'm not really sure about Wallace's other writings, because they seem a bit too tough for me. But we'll see. I also bought Bo's poetry book, Egghead, which is funnier than I expected and also has really charming and romantic moments in it. So yeah, I'm happy I came across your video ! Great work ! :)
This was great, thankyou. I defs don't think am going to read those books now. I am however going to go watch a bunch of your old videos 😋 So thankyou again in advance. 🙂
