  • The cars of 1974 reflected a transitional period in the automotive industry, marked by changes in design, performance, and fuel efficiency. This era witnessed the impact of increasing safety and emission standards. Many cars featured larger bumpers to meet new safety regulations. Additionally, there was a shift towards more compact and fuel-efficient models in response to the oil crisis of the early 1970s. Popular models from this year included the Ford Mustang II, Chevrolet Camaro, and Dodge Dart. Despite challenges, innovation continued with the introduction of new technologies, such as electronic ignition systems. Overall, the automotive landscape of 1974 was shaped by a balance between adapting to regulatory changes and maintaining consumer preferences.

That they'd throw in 33 cans of oil with a '74 Chevy Caprice is a bid odd. I'm thinking it was a way to 'pad' the showcase without bumping the price up much, since the Caprice was a high end car.

Interesting that there was 2 hosts. Bob barker and the other guy that I don't know.
Tess doesn't look like a woman that would enjoy the VW Thing. Yeah, a green Vega looks about right for her!
Dang! I'd love to win the Hornet! Why are almost all the cars either green or yellow? - oh, never mind, there's a brown Comet.
Never mind the Green Hornet. I'll take the red one!
Keep the 1974 Caddy. I'll take the Jeep and camping package!
    DANG! They have a 1974 Toyota 1200. I had a 1972 Toyota 1600!
I'll take that white Gremlin X as well...with 8 track!

The woman that took the prizes in Temptation instead of going for the car, the fact that Price pretty much treated that as a loss after Bob revealed all the numbers to be correct was kinda funny to me. That's the first time I've heard the losing horns for taking the prizes when the contestant could've won the car.

1974 was an interesting year for American cars since the 1973 OPEC oil imbargo made gas guzzlers obsolete. It was interesting to see them give away a Toyota since that was really the first year that the US discovered the value of a Japanese car.

The only cars offered as prizes on British TV in 1972 by ITV ( the only commercial broadcaster in UK at the time ) had to cost below £1000, & had to be built in Britain such as; Austin Mini, Austin 1100, Hillman Imp & Ford Escort mk1. Eyebrows were raised in 1976 when Anglia Televisions " Sale of the Century" had on offer a Renault 5! This model was foreign made & cost over£1000! So the regulators ( IBA) had to relax the rules a bit!) Those US & Japanese cars were fairly exotic compared to what British TV had on offer!
