I've always appreciated that Charlie does the topic recaps, cause honestly I never end up on the e-sports side of the internet. Recap seemed like a really good summary though, super helpful :)
It's not just gamers/creators -- any talent agent/management company, etc. that is outside the 10-25% range is predatory. That range has existed as an industry standard for reputable representatives in basically every branch of sports & entertainment forever (in acting, it might be split between an agent getting about 10% and a manger getting another 10-15% -- in sports you might have an agent taking 5-10% of your playing contract revenue and maybe 15-25% of your brand endorsements which require more continual labor and negotiations, etc.). The notion of 85% being anywhere in a contract should be fucking criminal -- like you even think about doing that and Minority Report precogs send you straight to jail. Edit: since some of you are confused about how this would relate to the music industry where recording companies are known to take large percentages of profit/revenue. These entities are like the platforms (Twitch, UA-cam, etc) and franchises/game companies (LCS, Blizzard, etc.) in the equation. The platforms and game companies make revenue directly based on your content & split that revenue with you in some way. Those entities tend to be oligopolistic and set whatever terms they want -- like record companies. It should be noted, for a small creator, the revenue split is literally 0% to the creator in most cases (until you are large enough to be partnered in some way on the specific platform). That conversation is very different from the one about an agent/management company, and the revenue split of found sponsors, which is what is being discussed here. Final Edit: Alrighty, lots of comments...lots of opinions. Many with merit -- some without any. I can't argue the morality of the contract; that's for each person to have a take on. I can't argue that The Mob was a good investment; they were let go because they weren't. I don't care about any of that though. My take is about the normalization of companies worth 9 figures taking advantage of a segment of the entertainment industry that has seen little regulatory, or, union, activity by hedging on their investments in a way that is highly atypical in the entertainment industry, at large. It will almost certainly change. Regulatory pressure will come. More lawsuits appealing to existing TAA will come. Organizations will not be able to continue creating unlawful contracts and laws will change to make more of their behaviors unlawful. That's all I have to say, I can't spend my life responding to comments -- Charlie has too many people watching his videos.
This has absolutely nothing on the music industry. Nothing. If you think this is bad, you've gotta watch Artefact, I got screwed far worse than they did, with a negative % revenue cut hidden within the formula of a gigantic contract; meaning, it cost me when my work made money, I paid for my own work being sold and was stuck in it for 10 years. I was 15 and my parents were just as ignorant in law and the industry as me so there was really not much hope. 85% cuts are normal, even packaging costs of 25% are included in streaming services, yes, digital copies. You always end up in debt for working if you don't game them yourself, find a small label who want to change the industry or do it all yourself. Now Spotify screwed us out of the very few people who didn't steal as well, Bandcamp is a light in the dark.
@@LoftyAssertions yeah, distribution platforms are a whole different beast from deal/endorsement/contract matchmakers (i.e., agents, managers, etc.). In terms of profit generated vs. revenue shared those entities treat you worse than an employee and give you a pittance. That's more like the relationship between Twitch and an individual streamer than Nadeshot and his streamers though.

Back in the day of MCN supremacy on UA-cam I remember finally realising it was predatory for a company to sign you at a 70/30 revenue split - when he said 85 I spit out my water
I always assumed creators like yourself who got a leg up from GnS and that vlog thing they tried most likely got signed into deals like this 100T and others. 85%+ in favour of the company

But it's not a UA-cam deal, it was a professional gaming deal which is far different on several levels. With MCN, You just get a revenue and some things to help you with your content. Nobody knows the MCN so it doesn't give you any notoriety upfront With 100 thieves, you're paying extra for the notoriety the name provides - you will get many more viewers just because you're attached to their name. And you're also paying to increase the notoriety of that parent company further, because with more money they can attract better athletes. You're also paying for the overhead involved with setting up and going to events

Charlie is going above and beyond with his management deals btw. I honestly don't know why every sub 500k UA-cam/twitch streamer isn't partnering with his company. Those numbers are insane.
In most states, albeit this is slightly off topic, but lawyers take about 33.3% on specific types of lawsuits. I have seen really unfair splits and shares. Security is one of those things in NYC that is literally exposed for hiding real contract deals. They were paying security guards $8/hr on a $36/hr contract. It's so complicated with some of the choices, but literally. Working for a percent of something blows. But people like protection of an umbrella, even though sometimes it looks like your being smashed with a nuke. They feel they are better off than being alone and trying their fair in a world hypersaturated. . . It's almost scary.
So I worked in a warehouse for 6 years and whenever we’d hit busy times or we lost people (due to them being overworked and underpaid) I would bring the issues up and why people were upset about working 5-6 days a week, 12 hours a day instead of hiring more people or paying us more to offset the frustration/exhaustion….the amount of times I was looked in the face and told “this is just how the industry works” was fucking insane. Reminded me of what Charlie said in regards to 100 Thieves taking the cuts they are. “I’ve been around and this is how things have worked”. Nonsense. You’re the big guy on campus now, you now have the ability to change the industry from the inside. It’s like when your grandparents talk about how easy kids have it now getting a ride to school when they had to walk through blizzards while the coyotes eat their asses. What a dumb take, the number of viewers is the least important part of this. The creators are being sponsored, they should receive the bulk of the money. Full stop. Also you can’t say the industry shouldn’t do this but try and defend a specific instance of it. Either it’s acceptable or it’s not.

@@what.5693 ok maybe i'm bad at explaining but i see your point. however, you need to understand that this isn't a sponsorship deal for the creator (The Mob), it's an org deal. it's an org deal that gets handed down to them, it's not THEIR sponsorship. The Mob was only able to complete the activation for the org (100T). and just to pile on, there were obligations for the sponsorship that The Mob fell short on & didn't complete (as admitted by froste), which had to be completed by 100T. The Mob, with a combined average of less than a 1000 viewers, was given a $60k yearly salary per person. they also retain all earnings from merch, twitch, youtube, etc. froste brought 1, out of the 3 sponsorships that they had, to 100T, which 100T then raised that deal to 200k & gave The Mob 65%. 100T is a content org. the "sponsorship deals" that The Mob got were handed to them BY 100T. it's not the same as when an agency getting a deal for the CC, the agency got 100T the deal, the creators are only doing the activations. so imagine getting paid a base salary, while being able to retain all earnings of your various socials, getting sponsorship deals handed to (& half-assing it), AND also having a backing of a huge company. The Mob brings nothing to 100T, they weren't earning them any money (only streaming for an average of 20hours/ week for 2 years, not producing any YT vids, etc.), the only way 100T could profit even just a little was from these "sponsorship deals" (that weren't even acquired by The Mob). 100T was only able to take 85% of the revenue from these org deals, not 85% of all earnings.

Don't get it twisted. Why Sykkuno doesn't sign with a group. Hahaha. Sykkuno always comes off as soft weak and shy. I watched him enough to know there's 2 Sykkuno's. There is a nice guy, yeah mostly. But never be fooled. Sykkuno has another side that he hides to is audience. And that his hard number crunching side. Every body who is a long time fan of him knows he is cheap as can be. I know he knows every cent he has financially earned since he started streaming as a career. If he wanted Sykkuno could run his own company like a 100 T. Sykkuno has most likely run the numbers a 100 times. And knows if joining a group would make him more money or not.

85% is actually ridiculous, no one should be accepting predatory deals like this. Yes, you probably won't get a lot of sponsors but this goes both ways. If all the content creators actually realise this and demand a bigger share of the sponsorships then this wouldn't be happening in the first place, it's just a shame that a lot of these creators are just inexperienced kids and don't realise that.
TBF frosty didnt even deserve the 85% he was a twitter shitposter that became "popular" but only on twitter, when he was signed to 100thieves, only because nade believed in them, they averaged like 100-200 viewers all 4 put together. The oportunity was to build a fanbase then grow, think of it as an internship, you are basically being reviewed for the duration of your contract then if you preform, you get a "bonus" which in this case would be a better contract, salary, better percentages, frosty just didnt put any work in. Most other 50-100 viewer streamers would literally kill to join a big org simply because of its reach to people.
"the deal is there because the creator is there" and you're right, and yet no one seems to understand why no one wants to do labour heavy jobs anymore...
So, are you saying all the services that 100 thieves provide doesn't deserve a cut of deal such as real labor as the lawyers have to negotiate brand deal for several days? The power 100thieves brings to equalize deal vs other major corporations. You do realize they are small streamers. No brand is gonna pay 200k for 100 views. Also, how is 100thieves suppose pay The mob's 480k salary with 10% cut? No one explains this. There were 3 major brand deals. 200k fireball deal, 100k el gato deal, and 100k another sponsor.
10% is only $40,000. How is this supposed to pay $480,000 salary?

@@shadowsketch926 What numbers are incomplete. It was literally all in video. It's like no one watched. 85% of the sponsorships, the creators still get all the money from their twitch and UA-cam revenue. Not to mention the four content creators picked a house that costs 10,000 of rent per month. One of the people only streamed 3-4 times when they got signed. They get to use all the 100t facilities and meet bigger streamers for connection. Didn't Tuz or Tuv, the guy who made content predominantly about tiktok get an insane boost because Charlie reacted to his content? What do you need consent for?
@@thepack9070 what charlie does is react to the full video, creating a replacement for the original video with his reaction. The exposure coming from reactions has been proven time and time again to be very low, almost in the hundreds and rarely reaching thousands of views, while charlie averages a million views on almost every reaction video he makes, not to mention the reaction streams on twitch gaining considerably more views than his casual or gaming streams. It's also been proven that even if a UA-camr gets a surge in their popularity because of a reaction it's just momentarily, basically not gonna last long at all, people usually sub and just don't watch anything else from the youtuber as a sub is useless. Tuv GAVE charlie his consent and okay to react to his stuff, you say you'd be okay with it too but not every creator wants their month's work on a video used for a reactor's personal own gain without their consent, kurzgesagt literally spends months on their videos and they don't let people react to their stuff.

Just the take of "Why would i need proof? Why would i lie?"
Is dangerous levels of bs
Even in my field as an ESL teacher, most platforms take minimum of 30% and a max on 100% on new teachers. Middle ground is like 60%, shits fucked
Thats why you always read the contract. All of it. Might seem tedious but it really helps.

85%+ in favour of the company
honestly without knowing much it seems like these people would be literally nowhere without 100t. taking 85% from a deal the company isnt fine but they wouldnt have anything close to this money 50-60% would be fine in my eyes. froste looks like he has/had every gamers dream and hes fumbled it.
It's mostly just sponsorship deals, not their total revenue. Whatever they gain from stream and UA-cam content is still their own.
But it's not a UA-cam deal, it was a professional gaming deal which is far different on several levels. With MCN, You just get a revenue and some things to help you with your content. Nobody knows the MCN so it doesn't give you any notoriety upfront
With 100 thieves, you're paying extra for the notoriety the name provides - you will get many more viewers just because you're attached to their name. And you're also paying to increase the notoriety of that parent company further, because with more money they can attract better athletes. You're also paying for the overhead involved with setting up and going to events

Like, you grow and build to change bad and scummy into good and clean for life/business/existence. What’s the point of working hard for a better future, if you’re going to be bitter/scummy when you have finally achieved a position of making it better?
"I had to suffer, so everyone after me should suffer too" is pretty much what this mentality boils down to, and it's awful. Do these people not want to build healthy and safe futures for the people after them? Isn't that the POINT of progress??
This comment needs to be higher. The excuses of the industry need to stop.

i agree with charlie that anything above 20% is an exorbitant amount for any company to take from any sponsorship deals, however, you have to realise that this guy streamed an average of a 40 hours a month & pulled in like a few hundred viewers. imagine averaging a few hundred viewers & being able to receive sponsorship deals that were 200k, that's insane. without 100t, all they're probably getting are no-name brand deals that are $200-ish. it's understandable if the mob / froste were pulling in insane numbers, but no company in their right mind will pay 200k to a hundred viewer andy to endorse / promote their products. it's literally impossible without 100t. i agree this should completely not be an industry norm, creators should not get exploited for their hardwork & talents, but this case is so different. on top of the massive brand deals that 100t are able to get for this small group, they're also paying them a base salary of 60k for literally doing nothing.
What a dumb take, the number of viewers is the least important part of this. The creators are being sponsored, they should receive the bulk of the money. Full stop.
Also you can’t say the industry shouldn’t do this but try and defend a specific instance of it. Either it’s acceptable or it’s not.
@@what.5693 charlie even said in the video “creators can reach out to companies on their own for sponsorship deals”
do you think if the mob / froste went out on their own, or even approached Human Media Group, that they would find any company in their right mind who would be willing to pay a cc who averages a few hundred viewers 200k to promote their products? 😂
i’m saying this instance is different because usually companies pay for the talents of the cc, however this isn’t true for this case is it? the company’s essentially paying for the name of 100t, not 200k for some no-name andy.
@@moonlighteab so the org deserves the majority of the money because the deal wouldn’t have been made without them. That is supposedly something you disagree with, but you’re fine with it in one particular case because the creator doesn’t meet some arbitrary number of views. Great.
The problem with that is that idea is that they’re still sponsoring the creator. The viewership they get in particular is irrelevant to me. Perhaps they could never get that deal otherwise, that’s irrelevant too. You’re just missing the point here.
