This is so useful and educational!!! I'm grateful that you did it. Malek and Azy are such wonderful people, and they're very close my heart. They're talented musicians, knowledgeable goths, great friends to have, and great people to learn from.
My favourite deathrock bands would probably be Cinema Strange, Virgin in Veil, 45 Grave, Mystic Priestess, Alien Sex Fiend, Horror Vacuui, Chants of Maldoror, Christian Death, and, of course, The Palest Grey. 😉 Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the French, Latin, and Japanese scenes, so I should make the time to change that. One band that walks the line between goth rock and deathrock that I really like is The Kentucky Vampires.
I laughed when Malek's microphone echoed after 35:00 because it reminded me of "Smoke my Bones" by Alien Sex Fiend. 🤣
Azy is totally right about some "deathrock" bands that sound very metallic; like them-self, I disagree with it. Part of me also wonders if this movement is related to Valor Kand's Christian Death. Kelley is right when she mentioned prior that there is a fine line to walk between maintaining the genre's proper sound and completely diverging from it due to creativity and experimentation.
I'm curious about your opinions on what some punks describe as deathrock. For example, Danzig, more specifically Initium. I'd like to hear perspective because I've only seen deathrock from the goth end of the spectrum, but some non-goths describe that music as "deathrock". Bella Morte gets categorised as deathrock, but they don't sound it to me... I wonder your thoughts. Speaking of punk, "queercore" is another term for punk rock that centres around LGBTQIA++ matters.
"Death punk" is another term I've learnt about online, but I think that it is an old, British one that nobody uses much any more. Also, "death rock", spelt as two words, was another genre from the 1950s, but it has no relevance to the deathrock of goth.

Wonderful episode! Such a privilege to have DJ's Azy and Malek on the show. Great to learn new things about the Deathrock subgenre that I didn't know. Phadia is an awesome new find for me! There's barely a community anymore where I live so I'm so happy to have a resource to discover new music! Means a lot!!

2010’s Deathrock is my favourite. I absolutely love Mystic Priestess, Virgin In Veil, Horror Vacui and Tears For The Dying, they’re my favourite bands in Deathrock as a whole. I definitely need to find more bands with that dark, aggressive style of Deathrock.
Edit: You and Azy mentioned Totenwald a couple of times and I was like “Ok, I definitely need to check them out.” because I love Goth music with saxophones with bands like Lebanon Hanover and Night Nail. I just came back to say I am loving Totenwald already. Shadows In Paradise needs to be played in the Goth scene in Sydney Australia right now! 🦇🖤

Just came across this stream. Looking forward to hearing it. Being a DEATH METAL fan from the very beginning...I am curious what death rock is. Hopefully this wont be confused with my METAL Religion.
I listened to as much of the stream as I could. I do thank you and everyone there for not confusing Death Rock with Death Metal. My education on the Death Rock came to an end because the guest with the reverb/ echo affect made it impossible for me to understand the knowledge that was being given. "might not be the most popular under the goth umbrella", well. at least it's an actual subgenre.
...and yes, Death Rock (two words) did die out seriously... the revival was a real thing in the late 90s and "Deathrock" (one word) became something entirely new (and stole a lot from conventional goth).
