The History of JCB

  • In 1953, Joseph Cyril Bamford built the first Major Loader using his own concept as the basis for the design. That simple machine evolved into what we know today as the backhoe loader, and ever since then JCB's machines have continued to revolutionise the
    construction job site.
Having pioneered the backhoe loader, JCB continued to improve on its first concept design. By employing advanced engineering principles, we expanded the machine's capabilities and many of our leading innovations have since become standard features on backhoe loaders throughout the industry. Four-wheel drive, extending dippers, torque
converter drive, powershift transmissions, all-wheel steer, sideshift chassis, powerslide backhoe, skid steer backhoe: all JCB world firsts. JCB built its reputation as the world leader in backhoe loaders by making its machines increasingly productive, dependable and efficient on the job site, and by fostering a level of operator comfort unequalled by other manufacturers. As a result, the JCB backhoe loader has outsold all of its competitors globally.

I got to know the "Wild" man from the dancing diggers. He came to my yard just outside Las Vegas NV and did a few moves with my new 214S back in 1998. Great guy. Just ok machine Series 3 was not JCB's best work.

I wanted a four wheel drive loader tractor and ended up buying a JCB 1400B backhoe, it's a beast, lots of hydraulic power, very dependable, has been an excellent machine for almost 10 years now, no regrets so far

Joe Bamford and his first wife, went on holiday to Germany after the war. They stayed at a Farmhouse B&B. Joe noticed the German Farmer had designed, built and installed a 'bucket digger' on his tractor which he could operate from the tractor seat. Very early the next morning, Joe went out with his little Box Brownie Camera and took photo's of the gadget, he even lay underneath the tractor and took photo's of how it all worked. On his return to the Midlands, he went about building the very same lifting bucket on a family tractor. he then Patented the design. He got a loan from a local bank and Formed JCB Ltd. He hired some people and they started producing the first JCB machines - converted tractors. Soon he managed to recruit an engineering designer and together they designed the first JCB Back hoe excavator. Soon they needed a large factory and Joe bought a large house with surrounding land and built the Main factory, just outside Uttoxeter. As they expanded they also bought the large Bungalow from where my Mum ran a café - it was situated where the main entrance doors are now situated on the Main factory. JCB now owns all the land along both sides of the main Uttoxeter to Ashbourne Road as it nears and passes the Factory, they also own lots of land all around the factory. All thanks to an inventive German farmer.

Andrew Sampson I was told, when I worked for Mark Bamford in 1985, that it was not a local bank that lent Joe money .... it was his mother. I thought the factory at Rochester was an old cheese shop ? Also I was told it was Holland where Joe saw the first crude hydraulic excavator.

Very interesting nice to get the local information, sounds true as well,a fantastic successful company, they were successful through hard times as well, and some of their products were complete lemons, the early tracked 360,the traxcavator, the 4 c,I worked with them all,but like any successful team they forged ahead, top class engineering, fantastic design, and above all their marketing, absolutely world class,no opportunity to spread the brand image was missed, and with superb innovation and back up service the company has become the world leader it is today.

Because they told me it’s a special Jcb going by the number they want it to sell it directly to Jcb the offer was amazing but I’m sure one day I will contact Jcb and get it’s true value. It’s A reg 6-1 front end extra dig back end 2wd serial number is why it’s wanted I don’t no but I’m sure it’s going be sold as it’s better in a museum then getting rusty outside

Absolute rubbish, you cant compare Deer with a JCB, Deer dont have the research facilities, the design expertise and the build quality of JCB. JCB are cheaper to run and cheaper to maintain, easier to repair and easier to operate. You are just spouting off with no real evaluation evidence and are probably trying just to be confrontational. Whats the matter matey dont like yellow, cos thats all you could come up with !!!!

Hi Mr Morgan, thanks for that info but we certainly didn't know.
Because the JCB we know stands for innovation, ambition and sheer hard work (which i'm very certain you're not aware of but i'll pardon your ignorance).
From small beginnings building agricultural tipping trailers in 1945, to the global force in manufacturing the company has become today, JCB has constantly pushed the boundaries in our desire to be the best. the company founder Joseph Cyril Bamford’s motto was, “Jamais content”, and that is exactly right - we are never content with our achievements. We believe that even he would be amazed by what the company has become. Today, JCB has 22 plants on four continents and more than 750 dealers around the world.
And if you need to find out more about us, you're always welcome to visit our website www.jcb-singapore.sg/About/Who-we-are.aspx for more details.

Built the worst skidsteer ever , "power arm" .boom mounted on rear right causing sheer. No "float" .under powered .has a side door you dont bother with. Piss weak bre akout at the cutting edge. Dies in the arse and serious hydraulic lag. You have to operate the "thing" accordingly, its weaknesses dictate how . The small excavators on the other hand are pretty good, once you extend the exhaust pipe above the cab edge so that fumes don't bloom around your head.
