- Many of you have asked me for the camera settings I use in my videos. In this video, I'll show you the finished product along with the raw footage (shot handheld, no gimbal) and the changes I made to the final edit.
I'm sure many of us could carry better camera equipment but instead choose to prioritize simplicity and our adventure experience. Well, you may be able to tweak your smartphone camera settings and capture some pretty decent footage! A little editing magic never hurts either.
ON SALE! GoPro Hero 8 Black: amzn.to/34vVcta
iPhone X settings:
- Native camera app
- 4K 60FPS with High-Efficiency encoding
- Auto white balance but will occasionally lock exposure (camera doesn't have great dynamic range so it's helpful to avoid going from light to dark or vice versa)
GoPro Hero 8 settings:
- 4K 60FPS with High-Efficiency encoding
- Wide mode by default but will use Linear mode if subject is stable
- Stabilization: High
- Auto white balance

I was expecting more of a how to rather than footage at various stages. Do you have plans to make this into a series?
Sorry if that was confusing. There are plenty of creators on UA-cam who will walk through editing mechanics using their editing software of choice so I’m not keen to duplicate that content. Most of the viewers on this channel are here for the adventures or gear so I just wanted to show the camera settings I use and incremental improvements achieved through editing because that was a specific question people have asked me.
@@HikingNerd No worries at all! You are absolutely right about the plethora of how to videos out there. Take care :)
Thanks! Nice to see you cycle in addition to hiking. I do both as well.
🙌
Love the scenery
What app do You use for your colour grading and how you make your sky blue?
When you say stabilized in post, do you mean on a pc or laptop? I’m wondering how to edit like you ~ with my iPhone, I take long hiking trips…
“Post” refers to post production which means editing. Most people use their laptops since the editing software is more powerful and capable than mobile phone editing.
