    I've been trying to decide on a new, failsafe backup plan. Decided that cloud options are too expensive, complex and slow. This is just what I was looking for to better understand CCC, which I discovered yesterday. Thank you.

      Rocky Mountain School of Photography Cheers, now if I can just figure out their pricing and the “non-commercial use” restriction.

    Is there a way to point CCC to a specific folder on the back up drive? I cannot see how to do it. Thanks

    Everything was clear except what you said about renaming a HD before copying the photos because Lightroom may be confused. What do you mean by that? Thank you

    • @forestchaput
      @forestchaput  2 роки тому +1

      Lightroom remembers where all of your images live at all times. You want to make sure that you never rename any files or folders once they've been imported into LR as LR will lose track of them. If you do import something and need to rename it later, just rename the file/folder/external HD inside of LR and it will remember that change.

    Question about using Lightroom Classic with Carbon Copy Cloner: After backing up my images stored on SSD drive to an external backup drive with Carbon Copy Cloner, I'm unclear how Lightroom will find the images on my backup drive if my SSD drive fails. Won't the paths be different to images on my backup drive as contrasted with my images SSD drive leaving Lightroom puzzled?

    • @forestchaput
      @forestchaput  11 місяців тому

      You are correct! All you will need to do in the event of a drive failure is rename your backup drive to EXACTLY match that of your old (dead) main drive and you should be good to go!

    Will it back up my Lightroom catalogue as well?

    • @forestchaput
      @forestchaput  7 років тому +1

      If your catalog is stored on your external hard drive than yes! If not, then you would want to use Time Machine to backup your internal hard drive with your Lightroom Catalog.

    Once you back up to an external, and the next time you only want an update to what is new on the hard drive, do you have to change the setting from "All Files" to something else? How do you prevent backing up all files again and again?

    thanks brother, can you tell me if it is possible to update certain folders from two separate external hard drives to one main HD? for example I have 3 external drives, one of which is a 8TB and holds all of my files from both my other two 2TB, So can I just update individual folders from these two separate 2TB HD to my main 8TB HD?
    Thank you for your time

      You can! You would want to first partition your large drive into three smaller drives. This can be done in Disk Utility and it's super easy. Once that's done, you just set each small drive to backup to one of the partitions on the larger drive and you're done!

      @@forestchaput I see thanks for helping me, but I think I will just do it manually for now, dont want to risk deleting any data.

    Hi. You advised to take the safenet off so that files deleted from the source drive won't accumulate on the destination drive. But you did not say that if you take the safenet off, it would delete all unique folders in the destination drive. I took the safenet off and all the other files on my destination drive were deleted!
    THIS CAN BE MISLEADING ON THE VIEWERS OF THIS VIDEO. MY ADVISE IS READ THE CCC HELP ON YOUR OWN.
    There's another option for "Don't delete anything" can protect the other files in the destination drive but older files will also accumulate on the destination.
    The most ideal is to dedicate one backup drive with the sole purpose of just cloning one source and not adding other files. Then you can turn safety off.

      He did say multiple times that if files that are on the destination drive are not on the source drive then they will be deleted from the destination drive.

    Hi, not so a clever option disabling the SafetyNet feature, at my point of view. I would strongly not suggest it. What about if you delete pictures by mistake? What about if o you get a malware which deletes everything?
    Ok, you have a third copy…
    My point of view.

    Great video! Question - I want to backup two different drives (my computer hard drive + an external photo drive) to a single new backup drive. If I backup the second drive (say I first backup my computer hard drive and then I backup of the external photo drive), will it erase the content that the hard drive backup as that content on the backup drive? You emphasize that anything that is on the drive you are backing up to will be erased so I'm curious if you can use this solution to backup differnt drives to one location. Thanks in advance! - Shannon

      You're spot on! What you will want to do is "partition" the backup drive. Make one partition for the computer backup and the other for the photo drive. To your computer (and CCC) your one external hard drive will look and act like two drives! It's awesome!

    • @shannontague691

    Hi, If CCC is used for copying one external drive to another, will it also copy across all the edits made to the photographs and the history of edits made in Lightroom?

    • @forestchaput

    Quick question: If you connect the external drive back to your computer and it has files that are not on the source (even the one you cloned recently) will you get that warning dialog when safety net is on? Thank you.

    • @forestchaput
      @forestchaput  6 років тому

      To my understanding, you will always get that warning dialog box, however I'm not completely sure. I personally don't have much experience using Safety Net as I leave it off most of the time.

    • @elevatordailies

      Thanks. I came across another video were if you decided to update a file the safety net keeps a copy of the previous version in a separate folder. At least that is my understanding.

    Ok, I tried using this program, but since I have 2 WD external drives, the programs tells me that I have 2 drives with the same "unique identifier" . Tells me to change one. How does one go about that?
    Thanks Jeff

    • @forestchaput
      @forestchaput  7 років тому

      Great question! That sounds to me like the hard drives need to be properly formatted. Sometimes problems like this can happen when a hard drive isn't formatted properly for the computer you are using it on. Do keep in mind that formatting will erase everything on the hard drive so be sure you have everything on another drive before you format anything. Here's a link to a video on formatting hard drives on a Mac: ua-cam.com/video/eDeCVUFl-Ac/v-deo.html

    • @jeffreylandis4469
      @jeffreylandis4469 7 років тому

      The hard drives are formatted for the MAC. They are W.D. drives formatted for MAC. They just have the same "Unique Identifier" number. I"m led to believe that this happens with WD products sometimes and one of the drives needs to be changed and I'm not sure how to go about that.

    • @forestchaput
      @forestchaput  7 років тому

      Strange. I've never encountered that happening. I would recommend calling CCC and seeing what they recommend.

    • @forestchaput
