This time we are going to compare two of the most famous amps in the world for their beautiful clean sound.
FENDER '65 DELUXE REVERB
The mid-'60s Deluxe Reverb is a timeless Fender classic and one of the most indispensable workhorse guitar amps ever made. Moderately powered and producing a full, snappy and crystalline tone revered in studios from Muscle Shoals to Abbey Road and on stages worldwide, it's a must-have tone machine. Today, the '65 Deluxe Reverb is still one of the coolest amps around, with the fantastic sound and vintage mid-'60s style still prized by rock, blues and country players everywhere. A classic then and a classic now.
FEATURES
22 watts
12” Jensen® C-12K speaker
Two channels (normal, vibrato)
Four inputs (two normal, two vibrato)
Tube-driven Fender reverb and tremolo (“vibrato”)
SPRING REVERB
Among their many fine sonic attributes, Fender guitar amps like this one are prized in particular for their luscious spring reverb. For that wet, shimmering ambient sound ranging from subtle to cavernous, Fender lets you dial it in exactly to taste.
TREMOLO
CLASSIC BLACKFACE TONE
Heard on countless recordings, this is the fantastic sparkling-clean sound, warm breakup when pushed, and cavernous reverb of Fender’s famous "blackface" amps of the early 1960s and subsequent decades, prized by guitarists everywhere.
JENSEN® SPEAKER
Jensen® speakers are the traditional Fender speakers, with sweet articulation for clean sounds and cool vintage-style breakup when pushed.
ROLAND JAZZ CHORUS JC120
First introduced way back in 1975, the JC-120 Jazz Chorus is one of the few guitar amps that can truly be called a legend. Roland’s long-standing flagship is universally recognized by pros as the benchmark in clean guitar sound, and its rich tone and famous built-in stereo chorus effect have been heard on countless popular songs over its long history. The JC-120 remains the undisputed “king of clean,” and the enduring choice of serious guitarists everywhere. Legendary flagship of the Roland Jazz Chorus series since 1975
Historic “JC clean” tone and signature Dimensional Space Chorus effect
Powerful 120-watt stereo amp with two 12-inch “silver cone” speakers
Two input channels (Normal and Effect), each with three-band EQ and bright on/off
Built-in vibrato, distortion, and authentic spring reverb
Footswitch jacks for turning onboard effects on/off while performing
Stereo effects loop for connecting external effects
From the beginning, the JC-120 was designed to be the best clean amp ever made. Forty years on, its pure, transparent tonal signature-supported by an integrated stereo amplification system and custom 12-inch speakers-still remains unsurpassed in the guitar world. While other amps have come and gone, the iconic JC clean sound has stood the test of time, relied on by creative players in all genres of music over four decades.
The Original Stereo Chorus Effect
Along with its unique clean tone, the JC-120 is equally revered for its impressive Dimensional Space Chorus effect. While commonplace today, the chorus effect was actually first introduced to the world as part of this very amplifier. Operating in true stereo, the JC-120’s chorus still provides a tonal experience like no other, filling the stage with amazingly lush, immersive sound.
Great with Pedals, Multi-Effects, and Amp Modelers
No matter what style you play, the JC-120 has the flexibility and power to deliver the tone you need. It’s an ideal platform for shaping sound with stompbox pedals, and it’s also great with multi-effects, amp modelers, and guitar synths.

Johnny Marr played both amps. Good sign both have their place.
Johnny Marr is a big gay, bad sign for both amps !
@@dafxtone lol what?
@@lukamccall9836 deal with it😎
dafxtone and moth butt have tendencies that they shouldn’t feel ashamed of, but they are, and they are worried for some reason that listening to a talented melodic player like Johnny Marr will bring these feelings to the forefront. Guys, it’s okay, we will accept you for who you are.
This comparison comes down to the classic tube vs SS amp. There has been an amazing improvement with SS since 1975 and it all comes down to personal taste. Fender is a bit warmer but Roland is more present. I tend to lean towards Roland, personally.
I agree!
Beautiful playing! Thoroughly enjoyed the video and informative description!
When guitars are put into the mix a lot of the lows are cut out. The warmth of the Fender sounds nice, but the mids and highs of the Roland have more character which is more important imho.
I have the fender. I've been wanting the Roland for years...now I really want it. Great demo, great recording, great playing.
Both are goats for clean sounds, roland sounds with less body but more cleaner, Fender sounds more warm with character.
Fender makes a nice and rich bell-like tone when using neck pickup, because of the scooped-mids tone.
Roland sounds "flat", but wide-open and sparkly in comparison. Also it has better mids (because of the "flat" response).
Although I love the Fender tone, I'd buy the Roland if I need to choose: it just sounds good, it has no tube-related issues (which can be a real PITA) and it's so versatile. In fact, you can replicate the Fender tone on the Roland (with some amp-modelling pedal), but you can't do the opposite. You can even plug-in some acoustic or synths on it, and they'll sound good!
Thanks for comment.

I'm a big fan of both amps,, I'd probably favor the Roland ,, but,, it would be perfect to run them both together ,a full warm yet very articulate sound, kick in the chorus on the JC and the reverb on the Fender and you'd a beautiful lush 3-D tone
Roland is flat sounding when the player is flat sounding or has little soul behind the notes. The Roland enhances what is already there, but it doesn't really add its own character. The Roland can be exposing to thin and sterile playing, but with great expression from the player, these amps are some of the most inspiring sounds that ive heard.
Stephen Pepper great amp of course. I agree!
It's got a peak in its frequency response that the Fender doesn't have, making your comment so true. That extra brightness means more clarity, and so if you're not really playing in tune, or confidently, it will be that much more apparent. The Fender is so much more mellow. But I love the overtones you get with the JC when using the chorus... reminds me of a really pronounced 'squillo' from a classical singer... it really SINGS!
Bullshit
@Mr g Yet Roland has sold so many of them and many well known musicians have used them, some who've probably played longer and are older than you, as well as having carved out a decent career for themselves.
Great comparisson! I love the jc 120. it is such a sound tank
EXCELLENT MUSIC, AND GREAT COMPARISON, THANKS FOR SHARING!
But it doesnt compare to standing in the same room as that JC120 spouting lucious tones
Thank you for posting this. You did a fine job on the song.
Great choice of song and played beautifully. I dig the jc120 for this song. Period correct. Can't go wrong with either. Though the deluxe with flange is really good. Nice work.
Thank you so much!
Loved the playing. This choice of song represents the two amps very well.
Russ Clayton Thank you!
@@AlbertoMartinezDelRio What's the song? I'd like to learn it.
@@LateNightYinzer just the way you are
both amps are exceptional......my choice would be the Roland.......i have always liked the ability to craft my own "clean" tone on these...
Ugh ❤️ Both are amazing
Nice demo, thanks. They both sound good, but I hear a little more warmth in the tube amp.
great playing!!
Really excellent demo!
Just the way you are by Billy Joel in case anyone is wondering what the song is.
Roland JC-120 is in a class all of her own... wish I had three more of them too!🤘🤪
I love jc 120's, but the Fender is so much fuller and warm. So rich!
jimflys2 Agreed. I think JC’s are over rated.
If you like a saturated tone then yeah your're a fender guy. Some of us prefer the bassy and trebley sound of the jc120.
This video helped me pick a Deluxe Reverb after my Vox AC15 was stolen. Great amp! The Roland JC is great, but it’s got a nasty hiss to t.
Lovely demo of two Superb amps - I only have a Deluxe - perhaps one day also a JC120? :)
Should really be JC120 vs Twin Reverb... That's a more fair comparison. This is more like picking on your mate's little brother...
Nope, respectfully disagree, Twin sounds completely different than a deluxe, However I am partial to a 68’ Deluxe, completely different animal, love it’s break up, and dynamic, that’s where it shines, just one speaker for a very tight precise sound. I’ve compared it to a twin, love the twin clean headroom, but the 68’ Deluxe for me, mic it up, it’s beautiful it jams.
Thanks for comment.
Thanks for comment.
I just got the jc40 today and holy hell am I impressed. Let me just say I don’t for a second believe it to be overrated. If anything it’s underrated because of the cost. Dial that sucker in properly and it is full, bassy and bright at the same time. I’ve played through countless amps to test their clean and breakup and the jc just feels like a dream come true. Such warm and tasty clean and from a solid state no less. I love the fender as well and have a fender amp in my arsenal. But I think you can easily dial the Roland in to get that fender clean. And then there’s the natural, spacey chorus. I’m still beside myself.
lucid_delirium is it really that loud for a 40 watt amp? Im looking into getting it only concerned 40 watts might not be enough for house parties when playing with a loud drummer
@Ryan Ashe, which Fender amp do you have in your arsenal?
I'm debating between JC40 and '65 Princeton Reverb for jazz / R&B type guitaring. Any thoughts?
De verdad son dos legendas tocando par a par pero por alguna razón la cantidad de fender Deluxe Reverb vendidos comparados con el Roland JC es abrumadora.
Algo bueno debe debe tener el Fender DR.
Un fuerte abrazo.
Pretty song! Nice demo, dude!
Thank you!
For slow soft melodic stuff hands down I prefer the jc 120.. the stereo chorus is absolutely beautiful. I've had an 80's jc 120 and I'm getting another again! I currently have a twin 65 reissue and it's just as loud as the roland.. and the reissue sounds great playing slow melodic stuff also but with pedals like the bigsky strymon n others ect ect.. the stereo chorus from the jc 120 just does it for me. Both amps are kings! Everyone should own both.
Totally agree
Beetween the Fender Tremolo and the Roland Chorus, there is Heaven ! 😍
1. Fender Twin Reverb
2. Roland JC-120
3. ABY Pedal
4. (2) AKG C414
5. (2) SM57
6. Mackie 1202 VLZ4 mixer
Mixer to recording device.
Basically mic' both amplifiers and play both at the same time..
Combine tone at the mixer.
Great, thanks for comment.
Gotta say I prefer the fender. Sounds like a warm hug. Roland is tight but slightly sterile sounding imo.
👍🏻
Difícil dizer qual eu gosto mais! Mas pra blues eu ainda ficaria com fender.
There is a 1990 deluxe reverb for sale here. I wonder if it will sound the same as this one?
Very close. Both sound great.
Roland for that chorus alone is worth it. Fender is nice on vibrato bit girth to the tone.
I have found the SM7B is one of the best mics for micing guitar amps ever. Not sure why more people don't use it. Sounds amazing!
because electric guitars in general are meant to have punch where dynamic mics come in, condensers are better for accoustics
@@uhMaxx sm7b is not a condenser
@@uhMaxxsm7b is a dynamic
Been on Albert King kick, now watching this, now want a Mooer E Lady 😂. Fantastic demo! Sub’d
:-) Thank you!
Very nice demo! I like your choice of play here; allows us hear the sound values without playing it fully which can disguise our own thoughts on the potential in a fully dressed version... both amps IMO are beautiful, but I wonder, at louder volumes for some venues, what the differences would be...? THANKS!
John Welch The fender starts to break from 4-5 depending on the pickups ... The jc-120 does not ... The volume and the transients without the typical compression of the valves is bestial. It is the cleanest and loud clean you can imagine
@@AlbertoMartinezDelRio perfect! Thank You!
Love the stereo chorus on the Roland JC120 - nothing matches that!
JC120 is brutally honest, nowhere to hide
I like to valve pre-amp mine and stereo it with a clean 50W Marshall
I have a Roland JC77 and while I love it…It doesn’t sound as good with overdrive and fuzz for me. I end up with a boxy tone with no sparkle. I get better results using a tech 21 blonde pedal running DI at home. It’s made me want to grab a fender for the fact it can take my OD and other pedals much better…but a lot of the hood ones are 15-22 watts it seems. Honestly thinking of using the fender for recording at lower volumes and rehearsal stuff. Then maybe live of no hood mic setup…run both amps for what they are. I love the Roland but it just doesn’t like my Jekyl Hyde OD pedal or my Fuzz. But when it’s clean and has clean fx it sounds great!
Just with Overdrive type pedals the JC has a boxy tone…vs the sparkle of a Fender imo. I’m looking at a few models of Fender amps from Hot Rod to Princeton and deluxe. Nothing too loud, but good enough to play at home with an attenuator in the patch if needed.
Jazz Chorus is my favorite clean tone
Great Amp.
I play the roland with archtopguitars Gibson l4 / Ibanez pm200 ......awesome.....brillant sounds. Best Jazzamp ever.
Roland wins in this test.... (my two cents ...)
But: when it comes to slight distortion I would guess Fender wins... :-)
Booth amps are amazing, for alternative rock maybe better Jazz chorus n for classic rock maybe better Deluxe Reverb.
Nice choice of Amps and song . . . I am a sucker for anything with a Major 7th chord .
practice achieves it all! Thank you
jc sounds way clearer and sharp. Definitely a better pedal platform compared to the fender. I've been looking to get a jc-40 for a little bit and this makes me really want one now
check out that pedal show , dan and mick even seemed surprised how good the jc 40 sounded like
I have one. Could not be happier with it. It's got another dimension of sound.
Thanks for comment.
Someone help me here. I have a JC80. Had it years from around 1984-ish. However, I’ve never been in love with it. I’m toying with a fender twin to get that Kenny Wayne Shepherd/SRV bluesy rich tone. Is it me not tweaking properly? Everyone I hear sounds so warm and crunchy on them fenders. Full on Strat player on neck p/u. Any advice?
Oops! I meant JC85!
I feel that the JC 120 handles P90s better for cleans. I tend to feel the Deluxe Reverb has less headroom with higher output pickups.
Try the guitar through a Twin one day. The Deluxe is lower wattage and will distort faster with louder pickups.
Roland, a win for me. Best clean sound with a Epiphone Casino by far.
Thanks for comment
the JC120 pleased me more for the resonance of the speakers and of course this wonderful Chorus
Do you have a pedalboard or pedal that simulates this JC120 ??
I have not
you can get the same chorus with the boss chorus pedal. or other pedals w the similar circuit
Glad you did this vid. Are you able to do a comp between JC and the Roland Cube? Pretty please? I’m choosing between the two. The cube has similar settings to the JC.
I'm sorry but I do not have the Cube available right now ... If you do not need all the power of the JC, the Cube has a great sound, but without different ... The chorus effect of the JC is unique in its class. On the other hand, the Cube is closed from behind and only has one speaker ... On my channel you have some videos with the Cube. A welcome health!
If we lived in the same country, I’d get one for you to loan. I might have try a music store. I liked the fender a lot more but can’t afford it.
If you have the resources, better to get the Jazz course. It comes in many different forms; JC 22, JC 40, JC 120 by doing this you can get yourself and amp modeler pedalboard and get any variety of sounds you'd ever want. Or a simple tube Pedal in front would do the trick as well. The reason why it's a better choice is simple, the core tone starts off unaffected pure & pristine. When you start off with something good what you build upon it comes out excellent. Go to guitar store, put any decent amp modeler in front of that JC, and you'll find out the tone quality is outstanding it's like having multiple tube amps and not sacrificing a good clean Jazz tone.
@@AlbertoMartinezDelRio I have the cube 60, I like it a lot. But I'd much rather have a jazz chorus. The cleans are not as good as the Jazz chorus, and the amp models, although good, are not as good as you can get with a pedalboard, like my Headrush Gigboard.
@@therealtech833 Would have to disagree man. I sold my JC cos it was flat with no compression. Starting going tube. Much better cleans like the Fender above. Bought 2 x 80 xl cubes to play in real stereo. Still much lighter than the JC 120’s and much better cleans. New transistor technology and much better clean sound.
Both amps sounds excellent!
Thanks for comment
Billy Joel! Yay North Shore Long Island! “..need to know that you will al-ways be, same old jazz amp that I knew..”
Both sound great. The Fender has a little more warmth but the JC has nice detail. You cannot go wrong with either amp. How about getting both!!! Lol
That’s exactly what Johnny Marr does by combining the JC120 with his Twin Reverb.
"Just the way you are" used a phaser, not a flanger. Still a great video
I'm liking the extra fullness of the fender...probably the direction I'll go.
To my ear the Fender makes the more dissonant chords in the progression sound rather more tense (because of stronger bass notes?) while the Roland smooths them over.
I agree!
I like how you used your third arm to adjust the vibrato
desdel84 the magic of a looper pedal...
If I could play both at the same time that would be very lush sounding.
That was my thought
You can, use an ABY pedal or something like that

@@sassythesasquatch6952 I think it's a guitar arrangement of I Love You Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel.

Hola.
Not a tube snob and im trying to decide if i should go for the jc as a pedal platform or just a tube amp a dri is v expensive. That being said both sound great but while the roland is flatter and more present that fender is awfully warm.
You are right
Thank you very much for sharing!
For that specific theme I'll stick with the Roland. More cleaner and detailed.

This is the modern JC120 (... the reissue)? I love both these amps. I have numerous Fender's but the Roland is next on my wish list - which is what brought me here. Great Demo!
Yes it is. Thank you!
I got a Roland JC 77 watt amp. I hear they are the most rare of the JC amps.. WHat would be the best OD or dist. pedals to use with it, I usually play it totally clean with no pedals but want to at least be able to get a cool dist sound sometimes.. The dist in the amp is terrible, unusable.. So what are the best OD an dist pedals to use with it? What do you think of JC 77?
Rat. Go listen to flock of seagulls tones. Paul Reynolds just used a Rat and a delay (and lots of the chorus from the JC). But a Rat can be dialed in nice on a JC. Especially if you boost the mids with something like a TS9 or SD1
i feel like you can add just about any OD pedal to this amp, takes a little dialing as always. i have a jc77 and i use a swollen pickle fuzz and jhs sweet tea, i also enjoy the BD2 and DS2 w my jc
Is it just me or the JC sounded like there is compression going on? Not sure if my ears are making things up but I think the Fender was representing better the expression levels. And I'm not saying that because I prefer Fender or tube amps. JC was my favourite before the listening...
have you ever run these wet/dry? or stereo
Not yet but I want to try it someday
Both are great characters! 2 trueLegends
I observed that the amps weren't being played with the EQ adjustments set to 5 across the board. The Fender had Bass and Treble slightly turned up while the Roland had Treble slightly lowered with Mid and Bass more significantly so. I would have liked to hear a section of the video with the amps played cleanly and no tone adjustments.
Both sound great, one not better than the other, just different and rich1
I love Fender , but in this case here Roland is the WINNER

Both :) either!! can't go wrong :) buy the one in the best deal :)
The warmness could be found in the jc-120 by simply jumping it, assuming the speakers in them are already the same

Hi, does your JC120 have hiss noise when you don't play? I do hear those hiss in other review video, but not in yours.
Hoang An Pham maybe if you increase the highs too much ... But it is not problematic
@@AlbertoMartinezDelRio thank you for your reply ;) guess a jc40 would be great for me.
My JC120 used to hiss quite intensely. I bought it used with some issues and I wasted some money on an inept repair shop. Eventually my electronic skills caught up with the Roland and I decided to repair it myself. I suspected the clean channel Bass pot and effects channel Mid pot were both faulty. I removed, tested (they both passed), and re-soldered them to their boards and presto the Amp works correctly now with much reduced hiss. I see now there is simple test for the channel EQ sections. Amp channel output should be almost zero if you simultaneously roll the treble, mid, and bass pots down to minimum. One can also infer that my pots had a bad solder joint on at least one leg of each of the pots I serviced.
What is the music you are playing? Beautiful chords
Thank you! It’s the beautiful music of Billy Joel
I prefer the Fender! And I don’t own one ;)
