The dual stage airbag, such as that used in the D3 A8 (4E), C6 A6 (4F), and Mk1 Q7 (4L) as well as the Mk2 clones (8P A3 and 8J TT) has two igniters that fire sequentially with a computed delay. The B8 platform (8K A4, 8T A5, 8R Q5, 8F A5 cab) appears to have introduced the adaptive single stage airbag, which the other platforms picked up at their revisions (D4, C7, etc). In the adaptive config, the airbag is a single stage / single igniter. The second igniter cuts a cord which opens up an airbag discharge port. You can see the cord on the orange plug of the old one at 3:21. The B8.5 version has a different looking strap, but same concept. Audi's SSPs are cryptic, but it seems that the purpose is to reduce the hardness of the airbag as you smack it in lower momentum events. As such, given the differences in the purposes of the igniters, I would not keep the dual stage in your B8. You are DTC free because the ABS module sees two igniters, but they are not going to invoke the same results with that different airbag installed.
@@6lake. Well, play it out based on what I typed. Both airbags have two igniters. The B8 platform fires one igniter for full force and both igniters for reduced force. That's how the 8K airbag is designed, it seems. The 4L airbag is designed "oppositely". One igniter for partial force and both igniters for full force. So I imagine what he'll get is the opposite results from what the car intended, a full smack when the car wanted a soft smack, and vice versa. Again, best I can guess at from the information available.
I'm looking to do this on my G550. The current airbag is dual stage, and the airbag I am changing to (generation after mine) is also dual stage.
