I have done exactly this, and it also worked in improving the sustain and volume. In particular of the top "E" string, in my case. I have a Chinese built Fender Strat.
That's why you only back the screws out a tiny bit. As far as I understand it the tension of the strings helps pull the neck in to the pocket a tiny bit more.

Great tip for sure!! The cracking sound told me it worked. Sometimes it's the little things that make the most difference.
After one dose this, make sure you recheck your intonation and adjust as necessary.
