  • If you're training seriously then in the modern era of martial arts you can no longer just study under one person. Most advanced martial artists (including almost all MMA fighters) have at least four different coaches that they rely on to cover all their bases. I have a question. Why do you separate grappling from wrestling? Isn't wrestling a form of grappling that you can use in tandem with jiu jitsu. Or are the two that separate at an elite level?

I've been doing Jiu-Jitsu for 10 years and believe me there are very distinct differences in strategy with the two. My first school had a wrestling coach, and it really improved our scrambles and takedowns by training wrestling separate from jiu jitsu

That’s a great question. Yes the two are related and one will help the other, but in reality people who are good at coaching one will rarely be as good at coaching the other.

What is your crass and brutally honest opinion, on the controversial mixture of Muay Thai + Peek-A-Boo + Judo combined? Would such a combination of combat styles be considered LETHAL???

Hi Stephen, would you consider Ben Askren's undeated run in Bellator as a modern "Hammer House" Mark Coleman?

Doesent this contradict what Ramsey Dewey says quite a bit that people should train mma if they want to do mma rather than different styles?

100%, my coach was a MMA fighter but hes kinda the specialist in BJJ and tying all the techniques together, their are some muay thai guys that coach striking, although we train wresling their i think that what its missing the most, their isnt much wresling in australia i have a judo background so that gets me through but top end freestyle wresling is hard to come by, theirs only a few in the big citys mostly

Back in the day, it wasn't just Hammer House who had a wrestling based main coach. I can think of the Lion's Den (first MMA school in the USA) from Ken Shamrock... who didn't do much striking until Maurice Smith joined them, and of course the two Pancrase Gyms from Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki. In those cases it was more shootfighting comming from a Catch backgroung than wrestling, even if those three head coaches where excellent wrestlers (Zuzuki was an Olympic alternate !).

@@StephanKesting You probably knew, just hadn't it in mind at the time, because you often mention Pancrase when you talk about the Bas Rutten way of "how to palm strike an opponent's head off".
Anyway, thanks for your great channel !

    Frank and Ken Shamrock?
Also Team Quest? Unless Dan Henderson, Randy Couture and Matt Lindland had coaches... not sure about that one.

sparring partners are as, if not more important than coaches. Of course, those things are usually closely related. But you need to spar to get better, and you don't usually spar with your coach, and even if you do, he can't give you all the angles you need.

Do you believe with the evolution of mma guys like DC,gsp, aldo can teach the striking and the grappling aspect of mma?
