    What a great narrative! We don't often get to hear about battles between only natives. Coverage of the Indian Wars is usually limited to US/Spain/Mexico versus natives.

    Got to say that I really love this channel. It tells of real stories, from real people, real history. A great relative of mine as taken captive by the cheyenne age 6 and he lived with them until in his 50s his mother, my great great aunt, marrying a cheynne man. Dying a broken alcoholic man in his 60s in Wales according to my Gran. This is REAL history, unbiased and unbound. I like it very much. We need to face the real story, as brothers and sisters and learn and understand. I love this channel. My great grandfather was known as White Crow Killer because he defended his adopted people. I love the cheyenne and crow today because together, I am alive.

    Exceptionally well done. The mystique of the Noble Savage has never set well with me. It made them seem weak, which they obviously were not. Every peoples in history have warred against their neighbor.

    • @nigelsheppard625
      @nigelsheppard625 Рік тому +2

      I think the concept of the Noble Savage was naive but not patronising or paternalistic. It was an over romantic notion that there might be a society that was untainted by either urbanisation or the concept of commerce. Such a society would have no need of war. It would be an equal society of wise and articulate individuals that were not indoctrinated by either a dogmatic theology or political ideology. They would understand a vague and unexplained "natural philosophy". In many respects the notion of a Noble Savage was a reaction to organised religion. Unfortunately this notion has influenced both Fascist ideology and Marxist ideology, not least that of the Khmer Rouge. It has also influenced Trotsky with notions of the application of Scientific Communism.

    I have about as much Indian blood as Sen. Pocahontas but I looked into "our" tribe's experiences in Oklahoma versus the Comanches and the Cheyenne, which was hair raising. The US government would not protect the people living in Indian Territory from marauding bands of these fine folk that Hollywood lionizes. They often had to leave their homes and hide in the woods to stay alive. A distant cousin of mine wrote a book titled Winona Speaks which includes a lot of detail, which was awful.

    Along similar lines, I recently read an account of a conversation reported by Daniel Boone. Looking at the huge mounds created by "native americans" or "Indians" Boone asked a local Indian chief who created those mounds. The Indian replied "It was not our people. They were built by the people we ran off the land when we arrived. We do not know where these people had come from nor where they went."
    Now that archeology is discovering that the Asian migration took place in waves at different times, it seems likely that the "Indians" found in possession of what we call "The Americas" were the last victors in a chain of conquests from pre-history.

    This practice was loosely interpreted as a vow of the stake and thong. A practice of multiple tribes, and traditionally done by older warriors as a sacrifice or diversion for the survival of the band. The dog men uniqueness was to ride well into the rear of the main camp to miss lead an enimie and fight to the death if needed. Again for the survival of the people. For me its also important to note that tribal names was what others referred them as. For the band itself only refers to themselves as our people. AI us and them.

    As a long time student of Indian history I offer this comment - those tribes that had the most resources ie., guns, people generally took what they wanted from those who had less. When Indians talk about their sacred hunting grounds one has to ask who did they take it from? The Sioux Indians were originally woodland Indians prior to being pushed out of Minnesota onto the plains. Who was occupying the land before they arrived and they took it from them? The Crows?

    Dog Soldiers had the right idea concerning the death stake. They'd pound in a stake and strap themselves to it... They could neither flatter their enemy with retreat nor walk into a bad spot. Let them come to you... "Good day to die" is usually attributed to the Sioux Crazy Horse but it was a pretty usual battle cry. It makes sense, it neither ends nor gets any better, and many people figured if destiny allows, today is the day I choose to die. Too much aggression makes you walk into one pitfall or another, while retreat is flattery.

Every culture that I can think of that reached complexity described here used armor to protect from arrows, javelins etc. They clearly used shields, lances, bows. Next clear step would be some sort of chest plate, helmet, thigh armor

    Don't forget there were plenty of tribes that disputed defended and fought over territories that each claimed as their own
    and Undoubtedly this is reflected throughout the History of mankind....just
    look at the many cultures tribes and clans that clashed in Asia Europe Africa South America
    every where there are resources for the essentials to support life results in a compition for survival and territories....My Ancestry is Nordic Scandinavian the flaming Vikings who fought and raided amounst their clans and tribes aswell as everyone else.
