Arecibo Observatory Collapse Simulation [8K]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 лип 2024
- This is a structural simulation of the collapse of the Arecibo Observatory in 2020. The simulation implements the three major failure events which ultimately led to the progressive failure causing the platform to fall into the dish.
The simulation is based in part on actual physical data such as mass and strength for the larger components, and in part on plausible estimations. What appears to be multiple simulations at different points in time is actually one large global simulation. Deviations from reality are to be expected due to the fact that the simulation software runs completely autonomous, only the main initial failure points have been triggered by a predefined script. Nothing is animated by hand.
Failure history:
2020-08-10 Tower 4 auxiliary main cable north comes loose from the socket (#301)
2020-11-06 Tower 4 main quadruple cable south broke, one of four (#101)
2020-12-01 Tower 4 main cable total failure and collapse
Some stats for nerds:
Base 3D model - 1.87 million polygons
Simulation model - 12,900 elements + 136k constraints
Simulation time - ~16 h

Island Observatory Failure - Фільми й анімація
This collapse seemed to have hurt a lot of people, Battlefield 4 fans, James Bond fans, Astrologists, and Puerto Ricans.
Let us have a moment of silence for the most awe inspiring telescope designs in human history.
Astrologists couldn't care less because they are charlatans. You probably means astronomers.
And Just Cause 2 fans
I want to thank you for this video. As someone from Puerto Rico who was sad to see the observatory get neglected until it collapsed, I’m glad this event has reached International awareness
I agree and as someone from the states I am sad that this happened and sorry too I'm just glad that far as I know no one got hurt hopefully and I also wanted to say going to aricebo was on my bucket list soon as my most of my debt was paid off but now I probably won't go but maybe I will go just to see Puerto Rico I heard it's beautiful down there.
@@bretthibbs6083 It definitely is. Thank you for those words. Also, it appears there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as last night there were news about talks for building a new and stronger telescope
@@texxon3355 woohoo that's great news hopefully they will start building it soon
@@bretthibbs6083 yes
It wasn't neglect it was too unsafe for it to be fixed with cable failures
Fantastic work, Kai. As always not to expect otherwise. Good to see that the BCB´s development does not stand still and that its functionality extends now from concrete to steel structures.
Those cables look small in the simulation but they probably weight tons per 10 feet or so...
Congratulations to those ignorant idiots that ignored their maintenance crews and just let the thing fall apart. That central platform should have been able to be lowered to the ground on a supporting structure so the cables could be checked and/or replaced. The fact that there had been cable failure months before the collapse and no action was taken, goes to show the management didn't care.
Because they had plans to tare it down in 2021 so they let it collapse
Criminal negligence.
The quality here is outstanding and it completely explains the demise of the structure without anywords. Bravo
Dude, this is a fantastic simulation, love this channel.
This is actually kinda sad when you think about it.
I remember seeing someone say that it was beyond repair just becuase one of the cables snapped and thought “How would that be that bad?”
I never knew it completely collapsed
This is all a simulation? No animated stuff? How amazing.
Everyone:Excellent work
Me: TELESCOPE!!! NOOOOOOOOO *UGLY CRYING*
Gorgeous work!
Thanks for being a friend in need, Arecibo Observatory.
Just like I remember From Battlefield 4

Supreme work! Didnt know BCB, gotta check ut out
The new battlefield 4 update is looking great!
Many thanx 👍
A GR8 vid of a very sad moment. 💔
A sad day
GREAT JOB 👍
how did you design the suspended platform so acurate?
The model stems from a scientist working there, but making it a stable physical structure was quite an effort as well. Check the dev reel to get an idea: ua-cam.com/video/OOYhG1-T27A/v-deo.html
Do the Champlin Towers collapse next!
Amazing man
Dududo im totally not making explosion sounds with my mouth as the satilite goes down...
Nice video.
Could you maybe do a collapse of the burj Khalifa one day? Would be really cool
His simulations are based on real life events so most likely no
@@rlas her* i know but maybe shed like to do something diffrent idk
@@l.v1473 oh a woman. Thats even better. I apologize for my try to guess/assume the gender
So that's how they stopped Golden Eye
you should make comparions to the actual footage
Good video.
They just happen to catch it on video. Precisely at the moment 👌 👏
Incredible
Who approved this design, it looks so unstable to begin with!
Dude it was built in the 1960s
It was perfectly design wise, but old and neglected.
@@whatisausername99 "Duude we went into space in 1960's"
And the aliens sent their reply back to Earth 2 minutes after the collapse -- the signal forever lost. THE END.
How long did it take to make this simulation from scratch?
Over 12 hours!
@@Piankhi_the_Greater just 12 hours?
@@mrpineapple3942I think he meant reader time
@@AidanLima-nt9qp if it's render time it makes sense
They need to build another.
Why did it have to go
Its really sad. These kind of structures only benefit humanity yet its destroyed
I was there a few days before the collapse
Someone already solved this problem with a full scale model.. :)
No more prime numbers...
How can this observatory collapse? Was it sabotage?
It was old and the cables weren't in the best condition anymore.
What Kostack Studio said and it had been through a pretty strong hurricane and I think I've heard that there was an earthquake there too.
@@bretthibbs6083 True. It goy hit by hurricane Maria in 2017 and the earthquake the happened in Ponce PR in January 2020 that was felt throughout the island (even where I'm living in Hatillo in the north-western of the island). It was around the time the first cable snapped in August that they started to check the other cables with man-controlled drones several times a day, taking about an hour each trip. It happen that on that day in December the drone was at the cable just before it snapped. The operator happen to quickly follow it as....Well, the world knew the rest of the story there.
Mira, lo que paso fue que nuestro gobierno no queria darle mantenimiento a los cables, y en una se rompio, nuestro gobierno es una porqueria
