  • We all have heard and known about major colonial powers such as Britain, France, Spain, Netherlands etc. But in this video, let's know a little about other lesser known colonial empires that are rarely talked about in history books and you probably will be surprised to know that these nations too had colonies.

Technically by the Finns that the Swedes settled in the Swedish territories due to their slash and burn agriculture methods.
Although, that being said, colonists from Norway, Sweden and Finland all used these cabins so we kind of share responsibility for introducing it in different places, although the Finns in New Sweden where first.

    You missed a few.
There's a town in one of the Baltic countries, not 100% sure, think it perhaps was Croatian?
Anyway, that town did some colonization.
Also, I believe there's a religious order that did some colonization too.
That said, amazing video, loved it.

Thanks a lot for your comment. Also, I will try to read about the baltic coloniser that you mentioned.

@@TheRandomQubeofficial Sorry, "Balkan" not "Baltic", my brain obviously wasn't working right there... -_-
Apparently the Republic of Ragusa *may* have held a couple of colonies.
One in India, Gandaulim in Goa.
The documentation is a bit... sketchy... though.
      They where *definitively* there trading.
But if there *actually* was a colony or not...
The other colony I had in mind was the one by the Knights Hospitaller.
They controlled Malta but also had Caribbean colonies at one point.

Amazing, you posted another video. You always put so much effort in it, the quality is amazing. Just a wonderful video. It was really interresting to see it, it deserves way more views. You showed so many colonies I had never heard of, I also didn't knew that Scotland had colonies at all.
Maybee some suggestions would be, how India was colonized or how the Indian government works. I think you once mentioned that you are from India, so that might be topics you are interrested and sure you would do great videos about it. But also would love other videos about any country. I guess India would be very long videos as it is such a big country. But please feel free to do what you want. To me anything, that has something to do with geography is very interresting. Keep up your great work.

    „Even“ the German Empire?
I don’t know why the German colonies are not known like the French or Portuguese. It was the 3rd biggest colonial Empire in the 19th/20th century and had the second biggest navy. The Scramble of Africa also started in Germany.

    • @janvisser4132
      @janvisser4132 2 роки тому

Because they started very late (because Germany united very late), and the territories they had were not that important. Spain and England had colonies that influenced their history, Germany not so much. And in the 19th and 20th centuries there were a lot of bigger empires then the one Germany had. British, Spanish (in 1810, still 19th century), Russian Empire, French empire, Empire of Brazil, Empire of Japan, Second Portugese empire (with Brazil, 1820, still 19th century). The Dutch empire was smaller by the time Germany got their empire, but that is because they already lost their colonies in South africa, Brazil, North America and India by then. They had much more influencial colonies then Germany had during their history. Founded New York, etc. Besides, the Germans didn't really go out and find and conquer their colonies, they mostly got them by just dividing up Africa. with the other allied powers that were there already.
I'm not sure that that is a bad thing tho. I am proud of the spirit of my ancestors, that they were so progressive and innovative, and that they went out to discover the world, setting up world wide trading. But I am not that proud about how we handled the lands we colonized, and the people that inhabited those lands. I don't believe in judging people of the past on our current morals, because morals shift over time. The morals of a time are just what the majority of the people think is right and wrong in that time, and it changes over time. But I believe that, as supposed Cristian nations, they way my ancestors handled their fellow humans was not according to the values they should have had. So I think that that was wrong. So only having colonies for a small time, and having abused the people there for a small time (I believe the Germans also pulled some shady shit in their colonies) might actually be better then having a lot of colonies for a long time.
