    The NEC PC-88's high resolution modes had scanlines that appear terribly distorted when forced to a lower resolution.
    I had to snip about two minutes out of the middle of the video.

      He’ll probably think it’s a fucking Tower of Druaga ripoff or some shit. Like how he constantly compared Hydlide to Zelda. Like “Oh, a superior arcade game that came out in the same year is way better than the world’s first PC action role playing game!!!” I like the AVGN, but honestly his Hydlide review wasn’t the most fair. I actually like that game. Thanks, James, for introducing me to it. I got my copy for free BTW. There was a “buy 2 cartridges and get one off the bargain shelf for free” deal at my local game store just the other day.

      Watching this video again and came across my old comment, and.......Oh, my GOD!! Did I really say all that crap 2 years ago?! Ugh, I must’ve been talking out my ass. I haven’t touched my copy of Hydlide since when I posted my previous comment, and I have coincidentally been playing a shitload of Legacy of the Wizard recently, which is actually part of the Dragon Slayer series. God, I’m cringing so hard at this criticism I gave. Disregard all that crap I said in my old comment........ I was a dumb 17 and a half year old who thought he was hot shit for having a unique opinion. Now I’m a college student who knows a good game when he sees one and runs his own video game development “company” for extra side money. Oh god, reading my old comment from 2-3 years ago makes me wanna puke!!!

      @@KeyleeTamirian Well it was good when it was made back in 1984, but releasing the game in the West as late as 1989 didn't help its status lol. I've played three versions of Hydlide, the PC-88 version, the Windows remake version, and the NES version (which in my opinion is the best version.) The way the game plays with all of its cryptic puzzles and the bump combat system makes a lot more sense after having played The Tower of Druaga, since you can definitely see the inspiration from Druaga shine in Hydlide (I'm not saying it's a rip-off of course, Hydlide very well has its own identity.) I can't recommend the game to anyone (or even call it a good game at that), but at the same time it's something I'm happy to have played. And as for Matt Ring's comment, well I still see merit in your original comment lol. I also love AVGN's and ProJarad's videos on Hydlide, and while I do think it would be neat if the game got more respect for being a sort of pioneer for action RPGs (as it got pretty dang popular in Japan), their points definitely stand. It was a very unnecessary release in 1989, and it even could've been done to market off of Zelda for all I know. Early Action RPGs are a very fun rabbit hole to get into, and unlike Hydlide I can actually recommend some ports of The Tower of Druaga to people.
      I also recommend Hydlide 3. Hydlide 3 is good.
      Or maybe I just have bad taste idk

It was originally released for the SNES in 1992, but there are PS2 and DS remakes available for it, though the DS remake would be more ideal since it has more additions than the PS2 one.

    The earliest JRPG I know of was Koei's 1982 game "Danchizuma no Yuwaku", an early hybrid of RPG, graphic adventure, and uh, hentai.
    There are also two JRPGs I know of from 1983: "Bokosuka Wars", the progenitor of strategy RPGs (as well as an early real-time strategy and tower defense), and "Nobunaga's Ambition", the first turn-based grand strategy RPG.
    And then in 1984, the first action RPGs were released: Dragon Slayer, soon followed by Tower of Druaga, Dragon Buster, and Hydlide.

      Correction (9 years later) - Tower of Druaga came first in 1984, followed by Dragon Slayer, Hydlide, and then Dragon Buster. However, Druaga could be considered an action-adventure (like Zelda), which would make Dragon Slayer the first true action RPG.

  • @RazorEdge2006

    Dragon Slayer may not have had as much influence on Dragon Quest, but it was certainly the progenitor of the emerging action RPG genre. In the same way Dragon Quest was the blueprint for turn-based JRPGs, Dragon Slayer was the blueprint for action RPGs. In fact, even the Final Fantasy series took inspiration from the Dragon Slayer series, imitating the way it always changed the gameplay system for each installment in the series.

      There’s actually a little nod to Hydlide in Zelda (hydlide being another early RPG for the PC-88). The part where you have to burn down the bush to find the stairwell leading to level 8 could likely be a reference or a nod to the part in Hydlide where you have to burn down a tree with Fire magic to reveal a secret dungeon near a castle.

    I refuse to accept this as an RPG. There's no battle engine! It's an action-adventure game like The Legend of Zelda. You can't even fight until you complete the first puzzle (getting the sword).

    • @PCGamer77
      @PCGamer77 5 років тому

      I hear ya. But Dragon Slayer does have experience points, which means your character gains "levels". That fact makes Dragon Slayer less like The Legend of Zelda and more like The Adventure of Link--the latter of which is usually classified as an RPG.

    • @RubelliteFae
      @RubelliteFae 5 років тому +1

      @@PCGamer77 Right. XP is what many people argue makes something an RPG. How's that different to gaining additional heart slots or gaining abilities by getting new items?
      I've gotta say, when I played table top games back in the day my having gained points that could be indirectly used to augment my character's ability wasn't what made it felt like a _role playing_ game. However, having both battle bits and story/exploration bits with different mechanics for each is what really differentiated it from, say Axis & Allies, in my mind. So, I've naturally applied the same logic to the definition of RPG video games ever since

    • @RubelliteFae
      @RubelliteFae 5 років тому +2

      @@PCGamer77 Sorry. I've had this discussion with a few gamer friends over the years and no one's been able to give me reason for the points-based definition beyond _argumentum ad populum_ , so I've stuck to my guns. Didn't mean to sound zealous.
      It does get a bit tricky with VATS being optional in Fallout.

      @@RubelliteFae "How's that different to gaining additional heart slots or gaining abilities by getting new items?"
      I think the difference in Zelda 1 & 2 is between "finding" additional slots and "earning" said slots through successful combats. It's pretty subtle. Which is why most people just go ahead and call Zelda 1 an RPG.

    Exactly. Dragon Slayer took the idea of changing the gameplay of each sequel much further than Final Fantasy did. Either way, there's no doubt about it that Squaresoft borrowed that idea from Dragon Slayer, since they were the publisher for the MSX port of that game.

    • @ultimalisa
      @ultimalisa 8 років тому

      Razor Edge I have to oppose to that. Final Fantasy was inspired by Ultima and Wizardry, the first RPGs ever that were translated and brought to Japan. Another Inspiration was the pen-and-paper RPG Dungeons and Dragons which was like a simulation of a turn-based RPG where the players could choose their stats and skills (later with more restrictions in their character build, when the class system was added). Since Final Fantasy was originally a turn-based RPG game it has no connection with Dragon Slayer.

    • @RubelliteFae
      @RubelliteFae 5 років тому

      Honesty I think that was just an artefact of figuring out what else you could do within the hardware restrictions and then getting a whole new system to design for every 3 games or so.
