This is the best overview of Leica's three pillars I've seen and answers a lot of questions for potential newcomers. I've had my Q2 for nearly 3 years and have no regrets although the D-Lux 7 was on my radar initially. At this point, if I were to upgrade, I would choose an M11 (or M10) as this seems like a perfect companion to my Q2. Owning two fixed lens cameras doesn't make sense and I've already had experience with rangefinders in the past so that wouldn't be an issue.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The M11 upgrade from the M10 is worth it, as long as it's within your budget. Having USB-C charging, new processor, new firmware and interface is nice. Bluetooth and wifi is also improved. However, you can get really good deals on the M10 right now, sometimes almost half the price of a new M11.
M240s are sold for reasonable prices and are a solid investment for those, who want to go range finder. I just sold my Q and my D-LUX 8, so I could buy a brand new SL2-s, because I can use all my R- and M-lenses on it. It was a bargain for just $2,750 or DKK 21,000. A bit heavier than the M, but now I've a weather sealed camera body too. The D-LUX 8 was with me for less than a month, the Q for four years. Thanks for your sharing and keep on rolling.
I bought my first Leica. The M3 in 1992 with a 50rigid. Still going strong. I have basically added all the cameras at this point. The SL3 is the work horse since I can adapt M. R and my S lenses to it, along with all the SL APO lenses. The M10 monochrome is my main street camera. The range of M lenses from the old to the new is amazing and I have even mounted some of my old screw mount lenses to both M and SL cameras. The biggest draw back for people just entering is the price point. I have been using the M and the R series for 20+ years so easier to keep going in the system. I still find the M240 a great camera and very affordable for people wanting to jump into Leica and digital. A great value and they still produce excellent images.
Thanks for your input and sharing your history with Leica. It’s a great ecosystem to get into, but the point of entry is high for sure. I think people have to stop comparing it to other brands. It’s like comparing Porsche to Honda. Sure they both make cars, but it’s a totally different ecosystem, totally different reason for buying. If you really want a Leica, many will find a way to afford it.
The D-Lux 8 is my first Leica and I am in love with it! I’ve been looking for a point and shoot to add to my kit (I’m a Sony α7CR/II shooter) since late last year. I’ve looked at all of the current (at the time) and older options and narrowed it down to getting either a D-Lux 7 or an RX100 VII. Then rumors of a D-Lux 8 started brewing early this year, so I held off…and waiting paid off! The DL8 came with changes from the DL7 that I value…the design, better compatible RAW file in DNG…any my personal need…USB-C! Lol The DL8 really does give me joy to go out and shoot over my Sony cameras…the experience is definitely different from what I’m custom to with the Sonys and it’s way more portable, giving me the “take it literally everywhere” option, and it just feels fun to shoot with! I do hope that Leica gives the D-Lux 8 and future D-Lux models more of the Leica attention they deserve, not that there’s no partnership with Panasonic. An example I hope they implement in the DL8 is Leica Looks. The preinstalled film styles are good, but feels limiting in the way it’s being left out compared to the SL3 and Q3s. The others they can include in future models are improvements to the sensor and include phase detect auto focus. In all, I’m happy to be a newbie in the Leica Ecosystem, and I an eyeing that Q3 43! The 40mm FL is my favorite to shoot with on my Sonys, and I’ve been adjusting my DL8 to 43mm, so in contrast to your fave in 28mm does not feel limiting to me, but I definitely get the advantage of having a fixed 28 over the 43. Thanks for this video! It’s been a treat watching your content! Cheers! 🍻
I'd love to see the D-Lux 8 get a major firmware update. Leica Looks would be awesome, as well as some much needed firmware upgrades like step zooming, and last focal length memory. Another one is long press on the play button to view images without having to extend the lens. Thanks for your input and congrats on your D-Lux 8!
I have a silver sl2, and the d lux 8 is perfect daily carry for that! I had an Q2, but it did not feel like a daily carry for me…I do street in a city and the q2 was too “nice” for daily carrying imo
If the SL2-S had the modern hybrid AF, it would really be a perfect mirrorless camera, maybe the inevitable SL3-S will satisfy that dream. The SL with Leica (APO) primes and Sigma zooms (the 28-105/2.8, wow!) is a wonderful camera.
SL2-S definitely was improved over the SL2, and the new SL3 is even better, but compared to Sony or Nikon, it still needs work. Hopefully in the near future with the help of the other L-mount alliance members.
I love my M10-P! Actually had the R for a while but prefer the 24mpx sensor so i switched to the P. I find that i can shoot on slower shutter speeds with it and still achieve sharp results. The R has better dynamic range though
Would love to see an D-LUX8 body with the Leica Panasonic 15mm 1.7 built in - call it a X series camera like the X1, X2, etc. I would be about the same size, but remove the motorized zoom (which I strongly dislike) for a great quality prime. That would be a true mini Q!
Would love to see the M-10R vs M11 video. Please do it sometime. P.S: I have an M-10R black (not painted, though) I bought used in 2023 at Harrods Leica Store in London. It was a bit disappointing. I know you said you like the sensor look of the 10-R, but I don't think it has the Leica "magic". Usually I don't like the jpg and also the RAW colors. I don't have those, but based on hundreds of M10 colors I see online for many years, I prefer the M10 look. And of course the M9 CCD sensor it's another thing and also a lot more "magical". But my 10R does not give an out of the box amazing and "magical" Leica look, colors or even BW image to start with. I don't know. Maybe I was expecting too much. For example. My Nikon D700 gave me that wow! factor as soon as I look at some RAW images out of the box on my computer screen. The same with some CCD cameras I have (the D200 for instance and some P&S). Anyway, maybe I have to get used to the M10-R files and look. I don't know. But I like it very much despite of that. It's a great camera as all Leicas. P.S2: I also have a black Leica M-A. Cheers!
I have the sl2 silver and d lux 8 in addditon to many fujifilm bodies. The sl2 without question is my favorite camera ever. However, the d lux 8 is a lovely little camera, but IT NEEDS LEICA LOOKS to make it 10× better. Please leica add leica looks to the d lux 8!!!! It would make it a better competitior to the x100vi with their film simulations. Also i love the tiny size of the d lux8 even compared to my fuji x100vi
Take I got too many bro! M6, M10, M11 SL and 10 M lens dunno what to do with them all. I should start selling them and stick to my Nikon Z6/3 24-120. Just got back from Bejing HK, and Guangzoh amazing images all from Z6/3 and a 24-120. Cheap and excellent . Got Hassy X2D which the wife uses and Leica can't even come close to 16bit MF. These days Leica getting to expensive and over rated hate to say. But it is what it is , you know me I've either tried them all or have them all hahah. I did a commercial shoot for Gibson Guitars using the GFX/2 and you can see every tiny grain in the wood and us Profoto lights. Hope to see you in HK one day.
100% shoot what you enjoy, Leica isn’t for everyone. Nikon has done a great job for the past few years. I was worried they would go out of business, which is bad for everyone, not just Nikon users.
Heres a novel thought for you. Only buy a Leica if you are prepared to wait 6+ months for it to be fixed when it goes wrong. If you are a pro shooter like me also be aware that Leica doesnt care you a pro and use their gear for paid work, that means nothing to them. If neither of these bother you go ahead.

The Leica D-lux8 and Q-series I think are great!😍
Still hanging on to my M10-R Black Chrome, and SL2… lots of photos left to snap with those beauties. Great overview of the Leica cameras!
As a second adopter, the M10-R and SL2 is the best combination at a fraction of the price of a new M111 and SL3. Good choice!!

Love my M10!
Awesome, and I love my M10-R 🙂
I think the DLux 8 is a great BACK UP camera for say Q2 or M monochrome in particular. In my opinion.
I have a silver sl2, and the d lux 8 is perfect daily carry for that! I had an Q2, but it did not feel like a daily carry for me…I do street in a city and the q2 was too “nice” for daily carrying imo
The D-Lux series has always been a great backup camera, but now with matching UI and ergonomics, it’s more reason why it’s called the Baby Q!

Thanks for your input. Dynamic range on the M10-R is amazing, but the M10-P is great too!
Samyang joined the L Mount Alliance recently. So, should be getting more lenses from them also.
That's great, Samyang makes great lenses at a good price and size/weight balance.
Leica lenses and m 10 R videos would be great..
More on its way, although I've created a couple of videos on the M10-R already :-)
Ok. Look forward to it!

Maybe the better question should be: which kidneys that I have to sell to buy another Leica 😄
😂😂😂

Q43 and nothing else for me.

Easy. If you have to ask ... you don't buy a Leica
WHY
Heres a novel thought for you. Only buy a Leica if you are prepared to wait 6+ months for it to be fixed when it goes wrong. If you are a pro shooter like me also be aware that Leica doesnt care you a pro and use their gear for paid work, that means nothing to them. If neither of these bother you go ahead.
I won't buy any Leica!
And that’s fine, it’s not for everyone.
