Only came across your videos today and already looking forward to seeing what you get up to for 2023! Great to see some bit of positivity around the Agri industry at the minute 😂
Cheers Tom well there's enough negativity out there to do a life time
Great video and an excellent sentiment into the reasons why you are driving ahead with your farm. Best of luck in your endeavours for 2023
Thanks so much hope it all works out
topping a grazed field when the cattle comes off it helps it come back better and even
Yea I used to have a disc mower up on till last year but it had its last day 🤣 I'll have to buy one this year because it keeps the weeds back as well
Give it time and you will reach your goal in time and you have good plans for the yard.
Thanks Kevin

Hi jm yea I was so glad I got into it good bit of work to it but worth it
@@Canningfarms When it’s worth it’s what counts super job, top glass your silage too fair play👍🐄🌾

Great video, only found channel today, look forward to more
Thanks so much
Good man great stuff come on your channel today.
On your timber posts I have being using galvanised tubing with light tieing wire.
One thing I'd say you is get a tracked digger for yourself handy yoke.
Love to see what you do with new calves coming in.
Keep the good work up
Cheers mick yea hopefully a digger be on the plans down the line but at the min a shovel will have to do 😄
Good man very positive keep it up.
Cheers Laurence try my best
Subscribed! I'm sure some of the rough cuts will tidy up as you get more used to UA-cam but the content is there and the passion is there. You're telling a good story and you have the enthusiasm. The one thing I'd say is that the best way to inform people about farming and the food they consume, is through positive demonstration and good information. As you said, there's too much negativity. I'd say the same is true though when people dismiss the concerns of people about antibiotics and also emmissions. And clearly they are issues in the wider industry even if blanket use of antibiotics or other jabs are not common in most of Ireland. So I'm looking forward to hearing you putting out the positive story of farming, acknowledging its genuine impact on the world around it - positive and negative - and being honest about the ups and downs of farming. I grew up on farms and love that life even if it's not for me today - so these kinds of videos are great! Keep it up!
Thank you yea editing and sound will improve but just at the min time and money are short but hopefully will improve as channel grows hopefully
Hi Gavin just found your channel and subbe, very intresting, nice looking yard etc. Great content all the best with your plans. Cant beeat a tidy yard and sheds
Thanks Derek not always that way 😅
Great video, subscribed!
Thanks so much
Ohh MAN...As a ex dairyman and now beef farmer of around 200,, one piece of advice I always give is "" work smarter, not harder""...Liked this video.
That's the plan to get the farm running with maximum efficiency with as little time as I can because we could all be out night and day otherwise.
@@Canningfarms That's why we got out of Milk production and into Beef..
6hrs a day milking is stupidity...It took us a while to learn that..
Just found this channel, Subbed, interested to see how your plans for 2023 turn out.
Thanks will
Just found your video today good job well done I will be watching from now on what part of the country are you from. Keep up the good work 👏
Hi Christy in mayo along the Moy
Just came across this channel and really enjoyed the video, but want to recommend supersoil it is an organic fertilizer that is a lot cheaper then fertilizer and if you have a small bit of clover it grows like mad, but as i said i just came across this channel you might already of heard of it but said i would recommend it 👍
Yea was thinking of using it but fisrts I need to improve my p and k to get the best put of it
Great video, first time watching and already subscribed, can’t wait to see more 👌 very nice yard and I like that you are looking at expanding the yard instead of buying a shiny tractor, a lot of people don’t have that mindset
Cheers Daniel yea I put money into a squeeze crush and handling facilities and done up the tractor I had couldn't justify having a massive tractor and nothing for it to do
Just found your channel, have subscribed
Thanks John 😊
Good video, nice detail on the contract rearing
Thank you yea something not done alot here
@@Canningfarms pity the old buildings have to go as they add a lot of character but old must make way for the new. How long are they there do you know? Where are ya based? And fairplay on packing in the job, would love to do the same myself
@@44birdie44 well hopefully I'm going to use the stone to build walls and piers around the yard to keep some connection must be 80 + years they are there
👌👌
really nice video
Thank you
New sub, great content 👌
Thanks Richard
Good man Gavin,great walk through.
Looking forward to seeing you tackle your projects.
I'm trying to figure out which county you are in. I'm a Rossie originally. 😁
Oh Jesus there will be battles at the border so, farming here in mayo l.. cheers for the feedback hopefully all goes well
@@Canningfarms I'd say your not a million miles from Roscommon 😉
Shur we're all the same west of the Shannon until the championship starts 🤣🤣
Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing how it all goes.
You made a savage job of the trailer 💪🏼
That's some super quality silage you managed to make
High gerard believe me not all like that but hopefully next year be all on the better side
@@Canningfarms I had ours baled mad early in May last year but haven't got to it yet I might have it tested when I do and see the results
@@gerrybrown do get it tested you could think its great silage but until its tested your guessing got all my cuts tested this year at least it allows you to plan for meal etc
Just came across ur channel. Really good. Love the positivity. What type of land are u on??
It would be good lime stone land but only have about 50 acres of grass at the min hoping to expand.. thanks again
Good content, the plastic instead of neat looks a decent job, no waste on the silage by the looks of it 👍
Yea very good acts like a oxygen barrier and can all be collected together
All the very best . Good luck for all.
Is any possibility to visit to farm . Much interested to visit on weekend. Really I will be glad if you allow and share details. 🙏
Yea no bother email me and we can arrange something
just come across your channel. just subscribe. great video very interesting. all the best for 2023. from county down. any chance of mayo for sam.
Thanks so much Hahaha don't think so and to make it worse I'm originally from cavan so I can safely say I will never see a Sam 😄
@@Canningfarms you never know cavan and mayo too decent teams. was lucky enough to see down win the all ireland in 91 and 94 great times was only young then.
Really enjoyed your video. How did you end up farming in mayo if originally from cavan if you dont mind me asking?. Im originally from kildare but now living & farming part time in Leitrim. Best of luck for 2023
Thanks so much, my father is originally from mayo after college I came down here and slowly took over the land knew nothing about farming when I started still don't but as the say everyday a school day
@@Canningfarms a bit like ourselves. I started out with 4 pet lambs and now have 70 ewes 🙈. Find youtube is great for finding info though.
Can you tell me how you tested your bales? How many did you sample to determine the results for each paddock - or however you divide them up?
Got them tested with arivo (you local co-op will do it for you) take a bit from a few bales of each cut for a representative sample, I just done by first second cut etc if you want by paddock just mark the bale when the come in so you know we're the came from and do the same thing
Hi Gavin
just seen your video and have subscribed to your channel.
Great to see your positivity.
keep it up.
what part of the county are you farming in.
Cheers Jack farming in mayo
Hi ya, quick question, with two herds of cattle so two herd numbers, what kinda of agreement have you on TB? I know a man at your game, but the cattle have gone down with TB! And now the shit has hit the fan. Thanks.
All cattle are tested and moved into my herd so no 2 herd numbers it's my own, as regards tb when they are in calf like mine are when the are ready to go back they can be moved on a special permit for animal health reasons they need to go back to the home farm for calving they have the facilities for it
Ex dairy farmer, currently buy in Fr bulling heifers and sell near springing or maybe calved. Im looking at contract rearing for cash flow purposes. I see in your other videos where farmers pays all extras ( dosing , vaccines, vets). Just wondering do you pay for the meal or is that your cost when not meeting weights?
He pays for meal joesph.. weights are done on animal to animal basis weight every 6 weeks havnt founf a problem yet only with animals that maybe off target on arrival or ones that are sick young
I would love to know what you charge for winter cattle? I have been thinking of doing something like this myself create video.
Depends on your own out k
Lay David tbh every ones situation is different I charge just a flat rate across the year for simplicity.. some charge more some less anything like dose meal vet ai etc it covered by the owner with me, after that my own time silage grass water electricity and repayments are on me
Don't pull down the old stone buildings, you'll regret it in the long run
Have to Brian they are dangerous as it stands but using the stone for other projects
Does the farmer that owns the heifers supply the meal?
Yea he does
Do you not keep any cattle of your own ?
Hi Stephen I only have a Dexter cow and calf so I can get into the next acres scheme
What do you make per head?
Depends on your costs year to year but try to keep 50% of the daily rate
Your silage is pretty good if your making 76% dm ,any tips or just new grass and cut before may 20 th if possible ,loved the video, thanks
@@marcuskinahan9252 this year going out with the slurry late Feb very early March follow up then with 18-6-12 (that's what our land needs yours might be different) that means then the first spell of good weather may we are good to go
What is said about steroids or growth improvers is a little suggestive.
We in holland aren’t allowed either to use that kind of manufactured things.
No one should want it, but that’s my opinion.
In what country’s isn’t any kind of regulation or less at all?
In the states the still use them Europe is alot more regulated
@@Canningfarms yes you hear no one about how this kind of stuff works in south america Eastern Europe Africa Asia or Russia.
Only thing we hear from people talking about farmers, not with farmers, mostly in the media and some politic party’s that we are doing it totally wrong and are destroying nature. Sometimes that gives a very depressing feeling.
Thank you very much for your answer!
@@verwonderingalom yea like you farm under the same conditions as we do which is so highly regulated and animal welfare is the most important thing
@@Canningfarms can you tell on what site to find this regulations in Ireland and or uk? We really don’t know how it is irl over there.
@@verwonderingalom we have the more or less the same regulations as in Holland as we are both in the eu the irish department of agriculture website should have all the points we have to follow
Ware gloves lad.
