- This review is a a super rare 1979 Norwegian Ration or Stridsporsjon SP/63. It was produced by Compact in Bergen, Norway. I have tried a few canned rations from Scandinavia before or Forsvaret Golden Can meals but this is the first time I've ever seen this and there are no reviews on YT. Major thanks to Kristain for sending this along with some valuable information, ans huge thanks to Erik Sunde of GCRieber, the actual manufacturer and user of the SP/63. Thanks also to The Magnus for also helping a fellow youtuber as well! Funny review and interesting take on this ration pack. Having served in the Norwegian Army as an infantryman and being issued these, I have a supplementary comment. These packs weren't issued as meals to eat on a daily basis. These ration packs were to be kept in the combat backpack as a last-ditch survival measure, to be used if cut off from supply lines over time, even then only to be opened on orders, or in an escape and evade situation. For our daily meals on exercise we'd, if possible, receive hot meals from field kitchens brought forward and be issued squad size field packs of fresh and dried foods for other meals.
Each squad would have cooking equipment like a gas/petrol field cooker, so the purpose of the improvised cooker in this ration pack is individual survival. Even if you run out of everything in the pack that gives you calories, you could still heat snow and thereby get some hot water into your body. Which is a nice luxury when you're trying to survive North of the Arctic circle.

I remember some of the same when I was in in mid-late 80's. Did get better by mid 90's tough. Worked in the kitchen in early 90's, and the food was pretty good by then.
I was told by my father and my uncles who served, that they had to eat this regularly.
@@gundog4314 Oh, the RSP. How I've never missed it. Ever. Eating that thing out in the sitcks cold was not a treat, hungry as I was... They do last forever though, gotta give'em that! Great review, cool to see the other components us grunts only heard rumors of when I was called up in 97. Now my own kid has been called up for January, going way above the arctic circle, as I did - he clearly gets the better rations! The Real-stuff is amazing, use it for camping :-)

I did my bout in the Norwegian Armed Forces in 1997-98. At that point the RSP was being replaced by more modern field rations, and the left over RSP stockpile had to be used up. It seemed like we where being feed those things at every opportunity. I especially remember one I ate cold, straight from the can with just a bit of salt on top, in the middel of the night during a winter exercise. The thing was older than me, produced in 1976 or something like that, and the weird thing is that I remember it as being really good.
Same period as me, and I got the same feeling about clearing stockpile!! And the exact same eating-cold-shiver-thing sitting in the sand against a pinetree in Bardufoss. That ain't food...
was thinking the same , was eating a cow that was killed a few years before i was born :). but when you are cold and hungry it did taste fantastic
I was there in 92, I was 20 years old and ate one that was 3 years older then me from 1969 (remember thinking : the year they landed on the moon..), under similar conditions on some cold desember nights in the trenches of the training area outside old Gardermoen Military Airbase. I was in the last clas/cohort there before they demolished it to make the new international airport. I ate it and it was hot and nurishing, but i dident much ceare for the taste and texture.
This ration was mainly intended as an emergency ration. In my five years in the military, I ate this maximum 2-3 times. We had it always, but only as emergency provisions.
The block of chocolate you looked for is actually on the tray. It's the "kakeblokker" in the bottom of the two wrapped ones. It says in small printing "med kakao"=with cocoa. Thanks for your great videos!
I was doing my conscript service in the Norwegian Army back in 1985 and we had those rations. I know the information coming now is a bit late but anyways: We used to make a porridge out of the cake blocks. We used two cake blocks and one cocoa block. Add some water and presto; best porridge you could get for miles around. If you eat a package of those cake blocks and add some of those biscuits in to the mix without drinking plenty of water with it, you will get punished. The word constipation will get a new and deeper meaning. Next time you go to the toilet (approximately two-three days later) you will have the experience similar to giving birth to a full grown polar bear coming out with claws first.

The r.s.p is still available, but as "Turistproviant" ( tourists' provision ) RSP translates as "Rester av Sprengt Personell"= Leftovers of exploded crew/personal.

How cool was that? I served the Norwegian army from 78 to 79 and have kept a Forsvarets Stridsrasjon SP/63 nicely stored in the celler ever since that. Today I showed it to my 25 year old son and wanted to explain to him what's inside, without ruining the plastic outside. Then I searched youtube and found this fantastic video..... giving a far better insight to this box than I ever would manage to do. Good memories and we had a good laugh. Now I can put it back for another 40 years of storage :-) THANKS !!!

If you would ship to Russia I'd order at least one meal! Had some pasta of yours on a field trip i Norway and miss the wonderful taste a lot. They were always made with the best ingredients IMHO

From the Norwegian MRE reviews I've watched, REAL is top notch when it comes to MRE foods. Wish it was more available in the grocery stores, because I would choose REAL over "Fjordland" and "Toro" products any day.

These ration was used until mid 90s after that its freeze dried, the RSP (canned meat) was often called "Canned dead man"

HAHA! This was funny to watch! And you are welcome, I didn`t have use for those anyway. I`ve tasted them before. There where 2 different kakes, you just missed it. One was with chokolade. And the white block is pressed grape sugar.
I think the English word for "druesukker" is dextrose.

You do not cook the stuff in the can, you fry it like minced meat. Tastes a lot better then.
A box of this fried, a couple of slices of bread would sustain a normal person in combat for 24h.
We even used these boxes as meat replacements for our "border watch Saturday Pizzas" at korpfjell grensestasjon.
These boxes are now equal to gold. One box of these could easily be sold for 150-250NOK (about 15-25USD). A whole SP63 ration could probably be sold for 500NOK.
Norwegian veterans are paying top money for a tin of that RSP....to eat!

Cold out of the box on toast is absolutely delicious, lots of butter and 6 to 10 mm of RSP on top; with coffee certainly. I could eat 2-3 of them for breakfast.

kakeblokk is not Cocoa, but Cake. Basicaly the same stuff as you will get as emergency rations on å lifeboat / raft.
I used to eat this in the early 90's...
I essentially grew up on RSP. Just remember: "Never heat the RSP in the box it came in!" The liner of the box is some sort of conservative that you could lead to a very loose stomach /diarrhea....
So, just cook the RSP-meat in another container, either the dry-food container or another pot/pan.
Druesukker/druvsocker ( lit. grape sugar) is Dextrose, fast energy. where im from its either bought in small packs like oversized gum packs and eaten, or it comes in power form thats mixed with water. it mainly athletes and people training who uses it, and i can see the army use for it quite clearly.

The reson you should take small bites and chew thoroughly on the cake blocks is that not only are they very dry, but the stuff is compressed, and will swell up a bit. Swallowing big chunks can lead to interesting experiences. This is also why you have the coffee, chocolate and the soup. You need to drink something while eating them.
and yes, the blocks are vanilla flavoured, with the exception of one that has cocoa. The joke about them is that they came from a lumber mill and was compressed sawdust, except for the cocoa, that one is compressed bark.
I got one of these during boot camp in 1988, and the sergeant told us to 'save the sugar block until you really need it' (we had a 30Km march waiting... That sugar helped some get through in time) The fuel can is also some of the densest fuel you can carry, so well worth keeping also.
The RSP (Remains of Exploded Personnell) was also sold as 'Tourist Provisions' up intil 2 or 3 years ago. I still have half a dozen of those cans. It's mostly pork and lard, and will stay good for ages.
There are connoiseurs that won't even hesitate to open a pre-1970 can. They claim it gets better as it ages.
The slightly later version pack I got had teabags...
Another nickname for RSP/Reserve Stridproviant(Reserve battlerations) was "Død mann på boks"(Dead man in a can). They were made with peas, meat and fatback. It should also be said they were still perfectly edible in the early 2000's.
I just got a new commercial can of this from a gent named Petter. Looking forward to trying this for real!

HAHA! At least we were in at the same time, in 89 I was stationed at Fort Meade but TDY to Panama. That was a fun 8 months.

I have heard a lot of things about Reservestridsproviant (RSP) (roughly translates to Spare Combat Ration) from people. Many people despise it, but others absolutely love it. The last order by the Norwegian military for RSP was in 1995 and it is edible for a minimum of 20 years or so Wikipedia says, this is however consistent with people saying they were eating RSP dated from the 60's in the late 70's and 80's, not sure if that is just some military hyperbole/in-joke though.
Was pretty interesting reading the comments and messages after the review aired. Seems the true purpose of this type was an emergency/survival ration so it would make sense that a long term meat like RSP. The stuff I had seemed fine after all those years. Cheers!
There is also Turistproviant (rough translates to tourist ration. At the time of introduction "tourist" meant hiker or outdoorsman) and Snurring which are similar deals. I have eaten fried Snurring a few times and it's great with bread and a fried egg on top. Even though they are similar they are not quite the same as RSP though.

I had 15 year old RSP several times when I did my service. Well fried in a pan together with egg and bread and you had a delicious meal with enough energy to get you going all day. Also had some older RSP when I was in the boyscout, it even had the same taste. I also tried the cake block, not tasty, but it worked. Just don't eat it just before you need to whistle. I wouldn't hesitate to eat anything of the ration today.
Just FYI, that fuel is no more than Sterno, a semi-solid alcohol fuel that is just like they use in chafing dishes, in a restaurant or catered affair. Quite safe to use indoors, with no elaborate ventilation measures.
I know, but I've never used 38 year old sterno and I didn't even know if it would light. Better to error on the side of safety. Cheers!
that chocolate blocks reminds me of early Russian army "kisel" fruit drink blocks. they was not part of mre rations, but was part or in military base canteen supplies. but we used to eat them without water as sweet snack sometimes.

They probably come off as really amateur-like to you. S those kids walking to school, the primary focus was probably the downpour they were walking in! I should start uploading again, sadly so far I'm just not feeling like it. All kinds of life issues.

It's odd... I won't drink milk that's a day or two past the expiry, but I'll eat an RCW from 1996. Nothing near the vintage of this ration though.
I know, we have some "issues" don't we HAHA

was in the army back in the 90s so i know rsp pretty well ...it was pretty good if you mixed it with some Instant mashed potatoes
i kind of miss that flavor ..think it only was meat ,peas and grains of some sort ..it sure made a loaded meal ..a tiny Box but it worked

that white thing in the transparent plastic, its actually dextrose.
RSP fried in oil, with eggs and beans is quite nice.
May not be applicable to 40 year old RSP tho :)

I ate plenty of RSP in my life. I like it cold and i like to cut it in blocks and fry it... but not heated like u did.
actualy gundog...i would say the supplemented these rations with wild game they would hunt whenever possible

I have one of these from 1967, from before the manufacturers changed their name to Compact. Only thing missing is the machbox, everything else is unopened and mint condition. Don't know if i wanna sell it, keep it or open it on cam for a youtube video...
There's a reason the RSP is best known as "Dead Man in a Can". Not a nice ration, I'm really glad we switched to the Drytech stuff.

I used to love the RSP in my time in the army. We used to cut it in two, and coock them on the oventop, put them between two slices of bread, and call them "field burgers". The oldest one i ate was from 1957. It was just fine.
Funfact. RSP is still sold in stores in Norway, called "Turistproviant" - Tourist proviant that is.

Oddly enough it was the same exact eating device the US used and included with it's K-Ration meals. I much prefer the Australian tactical food shovels LOL!

Hey Gundog, great review and the only one i could find on these as i have just found a 1980 RSP ! ive been reading that the stove is infact partially made of asbestos ? is this true ? im a little worried about using it or opening the ration up now..

Cant help it but i really enjoy the flavour, on bread with fried egg and some ketchup, its one of the best campfire meals i culd think of after a long day on the go! Allthoug i never tried a bad one, like you perhaps did..? Good job man!

It's getting harder to find now, but they got hold of a couple of crates a while back. 1976 and 1979 dates.
Had one small taste of it and decided to go away for a couple of days until the smell cleared...
I have a question: I just discovered some old rations in my attic that I had for a camping trip in the Boy Scouts back when I was 11-12 from around 2007-2008. I am now 20 and they are British rations with a production date of 2004 mostly being Pate and Tea etc. Will they be absolutely rancid by now or do you reckon all rations are pretty long-life? Cheers :)
Always error on the side of caution. I never recommend eating any of this really old stuff to viewers but if you insist on trying them always trust the sniff test and just try a small spoonful and wait a bit to see what kind of reaction you get. Cheers

The best way to enjoy RSP as an emergency field ration is to first crush it into smaller pieces, fry it a litte bit in the pan from the kit and then add water and the soup block. Saves time, adds (or masks out) taste and in my opinion tastes better.
I remember collecting coffee rations from two guys not drinking coffee in my squad and preparing it after the breakfast cake block with all the sugar cubes, i.e. triple coffee ration and 6 cubes of sugar in the big cup that was around my canteen. After a long night of sentry duty in cold and wet conditions that was the best coffee in the world.

Another small comment is that you should give the camera a little more time to focus on the food close-ups. It doesn't work very well at times. I do wonder, have you ever gotten food poisoning? I did once, it was quite so unpleasant making me focus on eating fresh, recently cooked food items. It would be amazing to sample an MRE, but I'm afraid all the preservatives / food additives would just further break my poor guts :)
Its an old camera that really isn't geared for the types of vids I do. in fact even the mic is starting to fail on it. Someday I'll get one of those whiz bang ones but like you said in your other comment life is more important than YT at times. Cheers!
