  • In this episode of our off grid cabin build series, we make some progress on our own DIY water well drilling. Our friend has his own well drilling rig to drill our shallow wells so we drilled a well. Yesterday we were a little disappointed with the results but we are coming up with a plan to improve our well.

John Hartsock , my well is 6 feet in diameter and 22 feet deep , it has rocks from the bottom to the top just like old wells were made , then has a squared off concrete top , I use a sump pump I got from Walmart and the gallons just flow , I tried to drain it but could not , could only drain about half way down , I gave up , by the next morning it was full again , it was built in the 50s , I use it to water my garden , wash cars , and if there is ever a public water shut down , I can still have water for any need that arises , I also have 4 P.M.A.,
Permanent Magnet Alternator's and a Generac 2000 watt generator for backup , so electricity is not a problem either

So many comments and few who actually know anything about wells and water. Pumping the mud out of the well is a good thing. The more you pump out increases the static volume your well will hold. Over time the water will eventually wash out all the silt and it will clear up. But keep in mind this is only a surface seep heavy rains will cause it to get muddy. I explained the potability of your water and how you can safely use it in comments of last video. For those who missed that comment i am a well driller and a expert in this subject.

I'm not a well driller but just like I posted before and please let me know if you agree. Most guys in this trade have a vast amount of valuable knowledge especially the local area and can pretty much tell you everything you need to know and will for free. I was in the residential building profession for years and the biggest misconception I think is that the pros won't help out the average person doing it themselves. In my experience the professional guys are more than willing to share their knowledge. Their obviously not going to come out and do it for you but a huge majority of the time they are more than willing to share their knowledge.

This clay dried and packed is a good profit business. We call it 'huma', rich in minerals it improves hair growth and cleans in depth the skin. And yes- it can be used as shampoo and soap replacement. Enjoy - you are blessed with 'huma' deposit.

I have done it same way with auger but found using a mud pump and circulating the muddy water into a settlement tank then back down bore hole worked best it pushed the mud an sand up and out, then just push casing down as you go till you are as deep as you want then put a sand point on your suction pipe drop it in and next pour gravel in and lift casing a little letting the gravel fill in round casing and sand point this should give you plenty of support to keep it from caving in and make a nice resavior for water then pump all you want to clean it . Shouldn't take too long before all clear water is left.

While you're pumping out the silt, instead of waiting for the water to recharge, save your water on top of the ground in a barrel or two or three. As the silt falls out put the good water back down in the well and recirculate it to pump out more silt. If you have enough storage for the silt to drop out and reusing the water that is cleaner you can continuously pump instead of waiting to do it every hour in this way your recirculating the water and pulling up the silt from the bottom of your well.

My friend, you need to have someone come out with a mud hog pump and pump your well out. You need to have the mud pumped out and a cavern formed to hold water for you. When you get the cavern formed you won't have to worry about running out of water. also it will be a place for any residual mud to settle and the slow pumping of water that you will be doing won't stir it up either.

I'm amused by people who say you can't have a well in clay & that you have to drill into rock. My well is 55 metres deep, in pure blue clay all the way down. It produces 60 litres of water/minute (tested by the drilling guys) and is absolutely clean & pure. It took a little while to clear up initially perhaps a week or so. The principle of the way it was bored and lined is the same although the pipe which we put down there (surrounded by pea gravel) doesn't have any holes cut into it. Water seeps up from the bottom to find its natural level. The pump sits a metre from the bottom. Been there about 8 years now.
Great channel Martin - been watching it for a year or so now. My kids prefer it to Netflix!

Hello, first let me say I really enjoy watching your videos. I have an idea that may work! But before that I am not a professional well driller or anything like that, I am a software engineer, but I have successfully pounded down a sand point well to about 26 feet for irrigation purposes. My biggest issue was developing the well. I read alot about this and people were telling me to jet the well with city water, or with air, which basically just push water or air to the bottom to make the sediment/sand rise and exit the top. Instead of wasting the water, buying an expensive pump or air compressor, I decided to do this by hand and it did take a weekend working from sunrise to sundown to finish this, but it did work.
The idea is to get water down to the bottom of the well that is not producing and clear out the sediment. I positioned 3, 5 gallon buckets down a hill about 5 feet from the well. each bucket had a hole and a 1'1/2" PVC pipe on the side about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom. the 3 buckets were tiered down the hill one bucket draining into another. I used a 3 inch pvc pipe to divert the water coming out of the pitcher pump to the first of the 3 buckets. I used some window screening to create a very cheep filter to try and clear the water between buckets, the last bucket had a 50' garden hose which I attached to the PVC pipe exiting the bucket, that I primed with water to siphon the water to the bottom of the well. now I filled the buckets with water and simply kept pumping until I finally was pumping clear water.
As I understand it you have a pond nearby (I would use that instead of the buckets...just divert the water from the pump to the pond. and siphon water from the pond to the bottom of the well with a 50' hose. and keep pumping.
Like i said it took all weekend to do this and I pulled out 2 or 3 buckets of sand out of the bottom of the well. but when finished the water ran clear and the yield was better. before I started only yielded about 5 gallons every 45 mins and by the time i was done it was yielding about 5 gallons every 15 min. which was enough for my purposes which was watering a garden and flower beds. Now this shallow well has been working for 6 years now and its actually producing better. I have not actually tried to pump it dry because I cannot and all it has is a pitcher pump on it. But no matter how long I pump this well now, I cannot pump it dry. My guess is I cleared out all the sediment untill larger pieces of gravel started working around the pipe and well point and settling in.
    Hope this makes sense.

    • @JH-dz5wi
      @JH-dz5wi 4 роки тому

Jim Thomas's plan above sounds better. I did this because I didn't want to spend the money on a pump or rent a large air compressor. Everything I used, I already had and if it did not work, then I was only out some time. and the cost of the pipe.
However, I must say It was an interesting learning experience and it was very cool that I was able to make the shallow sand point well work.

I just watched part of your video on the well. The problem as I see it and I've got a lot of experience in this kind of thing, is that your well is drilled down into clay and Clay does not let go of water that easily that's why clay is used to line Farm ponds it does not allow water to travel through it you need to get the well drilled down through the clay and into an aquifer that is in sand or gravel or Sandstone or some kind of Bedrock I don't know what's out there in Idaho but having a shallow well in clay will never yield enough water. The well I have at my property is 120 ft deep and is in sandstone and I get dozens of gallons of water per minute recharge

What has worked for me is to glue a cap on the bottom of the pipe. I cut the first slits about 6 inches above the cap and continue for 4 feet, small slits with small holes drilled between the slits. Take some time and make a lot of them and make them small. When the hole, the well, is bored deep enough, put the casing down and immediately pour the pea gravel around it, I used 4 bags. A smaller 1 1/4 in pipe with a foot valve on it goes down the casing and is about one foot above the bottom of the casing. I get clean water and no mud after the first few pumpings. The only way you can leave the bottom casing uncapped is if you put several feet of pea gravel down and even then I would not trust it. Cap it and make small slits and leave your foot valve 12-18 inches off the bottom and you can pump it till it's clear. Just my opinion. But this has worked well for me in clay. To save what you have, driving a well point down deeper is all I can think of to fix what's already there. 10-15 feet deeper ought to get past what you are experiencing. The well point has its own filter.

Why don't you use rainwater? If you have a point on your property that's higher than your cabin, you could install a rain catchment roof, store the water in tanks and then have gravity bring the water down to your cabin. Rainwater filtering for drinking is also not a problem. And I bet the water would be cleaner then what you get from that well.

Hey folks! Something y'all need to know about hiring a well drillers in North Idaho... They are all booked out until May, then it's $10,000 just to get the rig on the property. If Martin can get water from an 18 foot hand dug well in September, he's doing better than you might think! In winter it will produce a lot more, and in spring it may even overflow. The issue with impure water is resolved with in-house filtration systems. These are very common in North Idaho. Martin is on the right track. He'll make some adjustments and adapt. This is what homesteading is like in our area. That's why he's sharing it with us. 😉

Yes, your well needs to be developed (flushed) yes, you need - well you need a lot! My thoughts are that you are not deep enough. There are two types of wells. The first is a bored well. These wells are about three foot across and are bored down until you hit a ROCK LAYER. This type collects that water which has spent a few years filtering thru the soil and collects water laying on top of the rock layer, This is the best type of well. The water is extremely pure, cold and sweet. The other type is a drilled well. it punches thru the rock and collects the water that has bleed down thru various rock layers. These wells perform better in drought conditions, but the water contains lots of minerals. I think that I would get that driller guy back and push pass that 18 foot "restriction" until I hit the rock layer. If you get down - say 60 feet and the next day have 40 foot of water - you will know what you need to do

You need to get a sand point and use 1 1/2' galvanized pipe or what ever you pump size is.. You can drive that down a little deeper than what your at now. It will pump dirty for a little while and clear out. No more problems for a long time. when you do have a problem you take the pump off and the check valve if you have one on top of the pipe. Shoot a 22 riffle down the pipe and it blows the sand out of the strainer on the sand point. I have done this several times and it works fine.

The casing pipe should be capped on the end. It will clear eventually. It takes time. You gotta keep pumping it out every day until it clears

May want to address the bottom of your cast iron pitcher pump. If you have holes in it, then contamination can fall into your well causing contaminating to your water supply. Put a cap on your casing with hole big enough for your pvc pipe to pass thru to your pitcher pump and able to seal it so nothing falls in. Sand point filter or screen on end of your pipe will help with filtering. If you absolutely want the muck gone, then you will need to take stick of pvc with smaller pvc inside being 2 to 3 inches back from larger pipes end. Smaller pipe is for shooting water down while the larger pipe around it transports muck back out.

Ok, I am going to tell you what my gut tells me is going on with this particular hole of yours, and what I would do with it myself. You can take it or leave it. Ultimately you have to decide for yourself. You are obviously already well aware of that.
I think that since there is no cap on the bottom of the casing, the surrounding soil is simply liquefying and filling up the bottom of the casing. This is probably ultimately going to create a sort of sinkhole at the bottom of that casing. Or in other words, a large void, around the bottom. Although that void will always be full of "chocolate milk" from the liquefying going on and on and on...
    What I would do...
Get a "trash pump". That is a powerful pump that will pump the thickest chocolate milk you'll get from there.... Use that pump to pump it down every hour or so. Thus, creating a void, more quickly. Now fill that void with pea gravel. Just dropping the pea gravel right down the casing. (Make up another piece of the inch and a half to 2 inches pipe, with a cap on one end, and fill part of that with water, for weight... Then drop it in the casing, to drive the gravel down. Do this in small increments. Just like you learned not to pour in too much gravel at once around the outside of the casing.) Now use the trash pump , to pump it down again, as many times as it takes to begin to get clearer water.
If you do that, eventually you'll get to the point where you can let it sit for a few days, then use your hand pump again. And after that, you should start seeing clearer and clearer water.
If you never get to that last stage, but always have chocolate milk, you'll need to put in more pea gravel. What you are trying to do is to replace silt with pea gravel. And eventually with enough pea gravel in there, it will start to filter the silt.
If you start getting chocolate milk again in the future, your pea gravel probably needs to be added to.
All in all, you would have saved a lot of this trouble by using two layers of filter sock over the pipe, before you dropped it in. Even with the filter sock, though, it would be recommended that you drop some pea gravel down the casing before setting a pump and starting to use it.

selador11 what you said is true.. before dropping the pipe the bottom part where the saw marks should be covered by a fine net to prevent fine dirt and sand filling in inside the pipe.

You don't know me from Adam but there is my 2 cents. Don't mess around with your family's health, get a proper deep well. Ground water (18 ft) is way too polluted. You are way too far from the house. Will have to run pipe below the frost line and electricity. No. 10 wire is not cheap. Saving that expense will pay for 1/4 of your well drilling. I know you want to DIY but best leave this one to the pros.

Martain, You need to seal the top of the casing with what ever end cap, adapter, reducers it takes to make a air tight seal from the casing to the drop/pump pipe, that way the suction from your pump will draw water out the dirt---not out/empty the pipe.

The bottom of the large pipe is open so the silt is coming up the pipe. You also added your pea gravel 24hrs after you drilled the well. The gravel is probably 8-10 foot up the pipe and nowhere near where you needed it to be. Either repeat the process with corrections or drill a derp well with a professional crew. Needs sand to filter through. Also need to cap the casing and mount the pump to the cap to create suction in the casing so gound water fills in faster. You want to pull suction through the ground, not just at the bottom of your casing.

Cut slots like vent slots to let the water in from the outside of your case pipe cause the pump is pulling a vacuum witch is pulling the silt up not the case pipe

  • @LordRustyMcAlpin

You can make a bucket from that. I would just pump it into the ground. And allow the silt to be caught on the pea gravel recycling the water. The water will flow faster than the silt. And you'll recover the water.

I have developed many water wells for work and the issue is that you used the incorrect filtering material for your well.
You should have put a silt sock over the PVC pipe and used filter sand or even just plain old play sand that you have washed for the fill material and then cap it with cement at the surface.

When is the roof going on? I think that you will need a deeper well dug. Are you all the way down to the stone layer? If not the silt will keep filling it up. Are there any springs on your property? The water follows the rock layer. Hope it works out for you. Jim in Chile.

Put the pea gravel in the well casing so the valve isn't in the sand and also if your getting little water consider a storage tank. IBC or water storage depend on your financial situation
