This show is good ngl
This show has its faults and has some great moments ngl
@@oakpiggy that honestly sounds like an opinion ngl. I think Nathanial’s comments is the most accurate
Zuko being a cross between a conspiracy theorist and a Pintrest girlie with his big old vision board is so goddamn funny
this is by far the best comment anyone has made on the series so far lmaooo
😂😂😂
Love this comment so much! I'll follow Zuko's board 😂😂😂
It is also very in character with his early cartoon version lmao
@@groynin🤦🏾♂️
"We heard about the fake attack plans in the original show."
Nope, we did not lol. Calvin's ability to be 100% confident about incorrect information is just as strong as when they were watching the animated version XD
I think he might be thinking of the time when Zuko protested his father about his tactic of sending new recruits on a fake mission as a ruse. But that was obviously 3 years ago in these series not 100 lol
we also know about the false history writing which says that there was a fight between fire nation and the air army but aang knows they didn't have an army and that it was an ambush. not entirely sure which event this is about tho.
Guard hears rattling of keys as Aang takes them to break out of cell.
Guard: Must've been the wind.
🤣
and it in fact was the wind
@@yasukeg4202Yeah, we got that.
@@RetroJackit was actually the wind dude
Look, those keys, They're AIRBENDING!!
absolutely love the detail in Zuko's quarters. You can tell hes been obsessed and grabbed everything that had any possible connection to avatars
I noticed that as well
Thus why he was so pissed at Aang for taking his notebook. He spent 3 years writing on that thing everything he managed to find on the avatar and then puff it was gone, I would be angry as well
@@eduardoarmenta9232 true but Zuko doesn't really need an excuse to be angry
The old Zuko’s temper back then was like a stick of dynamite with a very short fuse if there’s the slightest say of the whereabouts of the Avatar.
I also loved that detail of Aang talking about losing something and desperately wanting it back, and it cuts to Zuko
Fun fact: for the german dub they brought back the og german dub voice actors! Huge nostalgia.
Now we know who drew that mugshot of toph💀💀
😂
Ctfu😂😂
He was doing one of those tik toys "how to draw avatar aang in 30 seconds" 😂
Zuko and Sokka's actors did amazing job i think
The show is an example of why in tv series especially those along the lines of Star Wars and ATLA, "filler" episodes are necessary. Where some people complain when an episode doesn't have to do with the main goal of the season and instead focuses on characters going on a sidequest. I think this adaptation demonstrates why those episodes are necessary because it helps build up the character's personalities and they get fleshed out more.
Totally agree!
I don't even think it needs more filler. I think it just needed more episodes to give the show time to breathe. I liked the show, but It kinda pissed me off how they just went yaddy yadda through Roku's temple. Especially with how monumental that episode was in the original. They shortened it down to like 10 minutes and roku didn't help one bit.
Avatar had a lot of character development and growth in the Canon episodes. The fillers were still good though. Season 1 was a journey that was more lighthearted, but forced Aang to realize the stakes of abandoning his journey or failing. Season 2 was more mature highlighting darker tones. Season 3 was light hearted but ominous knowing where we were heading. Basically follows the OG Star Wars. Season 1=New Hope good guys win. Season 2=Empire Strikes Back Bad Guys win. Season 3= Return of the Jedi, the grand finale.
I could not disagree more. Filler episodes can be good episodes, but that in no way means filler episodes are necessary.
They are called filler purely because something integral to a show is missing: plot development.
*Being filler will always be a flaw.*
Now one flaw may not make the episode unnecessary, but it does *not* mean that the flaw itself is necessary.
That’s like saying, this dish is so good despite having too much salt. I should put too much salt in everything.
@@Agentcproductionssthe problem with that episode was that it created an urgency for Aang to learn all elements in 6-9 months, which the show runners did not want to do, so that when the actors age till the next seasons (hopefully), it doesn't look weird when they play characters who are 4 years or so younger.
they also gave Gyatso a lot of the mentor role Roku had in the original, leaving him with nothing for the time being.
but i liked that they made Aang contact all other avatars at their shrine (minus Yangchen, because her shrine was destroyed) and they all tell him, that he has to do everything alone. that creates a journey for him where he has to learn that needing people to help you is not bad. it might not be easy and you can be hurt (Roku hints on Sozin's betrayal of their freindship), but it is a lot better than carrying the burden alone.
This Blind Wave series introduction is a work of art

The BlindWave Avatar intro is soooooo amazing!
I didn't recognise the water segment. Do you know where that bit was from?
@@sandrosliske I don't know where any of the clips are from sorry
@@auden4531 that's fine, thank you.
There were a couple places where I felt like the emotional weight of the original was undercut a bit. I would have liked Katara to have gotten through to Aang to pull him out of the avatar state. Maybe not "We're your family now" because he's known them for 12 seconds, but something like "You're not alone, you've got us." could have been nice. In retrospect I think you're right about Avatar State at the ship. I missed it in the moment, but then when they went to the temple immediately after I knew it would have been redundant.
The other thing that intro scene accomplishes is establishing earthbending so that the first episode shows all 4 bending styles. In the animated ATLA, we don't see any earthbending until episode 5.
watch the last episode lol
@@TheSyncos why is it good to show earthbending on ep1?
Would it have been better if Mando had gotten baby Yoda out of his force trance in that episode? I feel like this works better as the trope
They may not have had Katara talk Aang down at the Southern Air Temple, but they did focus on her voice as she called his name; as though through his emotional maelstrom, he could still focus on her. Maybe a connection there?
I like how they show the burned bodies (that didnt sound like a psycho)
To tell the truth who really gets burned besides zuko aang katara and song... I cant think of anyone oh yeah toph when her feet got burned. This gives alot of intensity
Meanwhile they turned Zuko's scar from having disfigured his face (his eye barely opens and his ear is half-gone) to a spot of makeup
They're cool with being gritty for show, but couldn't go through with a visibly maimed main character
Nickelodeon's kid's cartoon was somehow more brutal than the live action version that starts with genocide, because they reserved it for where it mattered
It's a child actor, probably didn't want to take too much of the restricted child labor work hours each day that protect them just sitting in a makeup chair @@jogadorjnc
I def appreciate that, I remember Legends of Tomorrow that dude with the Flamethrower gun not actually setting anyone on fire. Just sorta vaguely knocking them back.
@@ToidalZuko's actor is 22 years old
But also, if they can have an arrow with an intricate design on Aang's head they could have a scar with an intricate design on Zuko's face, even if he WAS a child actor
His less noticeable scar was 100% a choice because they couldn't go through with a maimed MC
@@Toidalhe’s not a child actor lmao
One of my only small issues I have with the live action is Zuko’s scar. They had an opportunity to make a good realistic scar but even the cartoon scar looks harsher than the live action
They did hardly anything 🥴
That opening scene was better than that whole dang movie! Loved this show.
Low bar
@christom5334 I don't think so. I actually think the show is amazing. I wasn't looking for a play by play of the animated version. I think it is being respectful of the animated version, but is meant to be its own thing.
There is no movie in Ba Sing Se.
That Blindwave intro was 🌊🌍🔥🌪
I’ve heard so many people talk about and complain about this and I love how positive and understanding you guys are when it comes to shows you watch, while you still criticize things that need criticism
Yeah. They're not acting as if they were freakin' robbed at gunpoint.
i despise that
@@chrischika7026you enjoy negativity, find something you enjoy
I really appreciated the character writing for Sokka and Katara in this episode. Sokka and Katara have their disagreements and conflict, but they grew up fast, and they rely on each other and lean on each other. They're a team! It's awesome how they emphasized their mindsets, contrasting Sokka's pragmatism and Katara's idealism, and in the end, Sokka began to see things Katara's way.
Katara still is shown to be strong too, but she doesn't need to put down her brother to prove it.
They removed Kataras selfish desire to learn waterbending though which I don't like. In general it seems like they removed a lot of character flaws this episode, Aangs, Gyatsos and Kataras.
@@sandmand4036 what? No. Katara clearly goes to train her waterbending in the rusted out Fire nation ship. She trains her waterbending all the time.
@@DWargs In the anime Katara was only interested in Aang because he was her path to learning waterbending. She even thought about leaving the village with Aang when he was asked to leave and told grangran something along the lines of "are you happy now you just made my last chance of becoming a waterbender leave". Even after finding out he was the avatar it wasn't because of noble cause she wanted to help she still just wanted to use him and said something along the lines of "now we can go to the north pole and both find a waterbending master". Seeing Aang as hope and truly learning to be selfless was something that developed in her throughout the journey and being with Aang.
That intro made my life.
10/10 for technical prowess
My second comment lol, but thought I'd talk about this. So you were talking about the skill/power difference between the airbenders and the fire benders and how Sozin openly admits that without the comet they probably couldn't have defeated the monks, and I think it's important to realise why.
Airbenders are given to the air temples by their parents when their bending is revealed, and subsequently spend their entire life dedicated to mastering airbending and achieving spiritual enlightenment, whereas the firebenders are just soldiers that learned to control their firebending.
I agree with everything you said except bending is genetic, other than season 3 of korra, parents do not give their kids away to be nomads. So airbenders are born as nomads and live their entire lives as nomads seeking spiritual enlightenment
Completely incorrect, at least according to the original animated show. The Air nomads are unique among the nations because every single member is an Airbender. There are no Air nomads that are non-benders. Also, the children are simply the children of the different monks, however it is true that they don't have traditional parenting. All of the children are raised by all of the monks, and none of the children know who their biological parents are. It's basically a monastery acting as one big family.
When I first came across Blind Wave through my brother (hi Tony!), the animated series was one of the first reactions that drew me in. (Rebels was the other one🙌🏼) I’ve been excited about these reactions since they announced they were creating the show. It feels full circle. I can’t wait to rewatch the rest with you guys (because I of course binge watched lol). Thanks for everything you guys have done since the first watch through/reactions of ATLA 🫶🏼
The air temple raid scene was well done amazingly well and Zuko is almost exactly like himself in the original so far, which I love. This isn't so bad so far, much better than the movie.
Me running my balls through a cheese grater is better movie than that monstrosity
What movie?
@@incelnicel8565I like the way you think 🤣
There is no movie
Maybe we watched different shows.
this zuko look like a young shang tsung from the first mortal kombat
I only wish they had made Gyatso more lethal. In the original show, we saw his body surrounded by like 20 fire benders skeletons, so you know he did not go down without doing everything he could to fight back. Here it was only like 3 dudes who were just pushed away, before he was merked by Sozin
My head canon is that when he created that vortex in the room he killed all the firebenders attacking except fo sozin who broke through the attack.
Yeah I was preparing myself for Gyatso to take down a bunch of them and then... nothing. Made me sad since it was the only thing I was expecting for that scene lol
Exsctly. When I realised they were going to show us the actual culling of the airbenders, my immediate hope was that we'd actually be able to see how Gyatso fought back and ultimately fell, but unfortunately it was undercut
@@exyuda6592 I think it's probably because that's the only proper context we get for the actual fight in the animated show, so naturally it's the one thing we thought of
To be fair, he blew a bunch a way then held back a comet-powered firelord Sozin for a respectable amount of time. Still a badass for suee, but I think they wanted to emphasise his caring side more
I was so hype when I saw this posted. You all were my first reaction channel, and I remember watching you react to the original back in the day.
Aang: "Look at me, I'm Guru Laghima!"
Show writers be like..."Ups,. that was lore?
lol he wasn't flying...he as falling...with style.
@@Deadman7782 Not really. Aang is still just using air to push himself up, Guru Laghima was just able to fly. No air manipulation needed.
@@CommanderSteelTrapand aang uses air bending to glide down from long falls multiple times in the show. It's hardly a lore mistake
He wasn’t flying, he was using air to keep him up, Zaheer was literally just floating without air bending
Right on right on, I was looking forward to you guys' reaction. I'm loving the series so far, 3 episodes in. I loved showing when the Fire Nation attacked. And that whole cast is so fun to watch.
I super appreciate that you guys didn't expect it to be frame by frame similar to the animation!
I have been waiting for this
My one gripe, and it's pretty minor, is that if the firebenders had the power to literally fly up to the temple (power of 100 suns), their fire attacks should b bigger than what it was
I thought about that too. My way of "excusing" it is that it must have been exhausting to do so. I'm thinking that even though their power is increased massively, it still takes a lot out of them to wield that power. The comet might give them energy, but they still aren't used to to the power.
i think they really nailed zuko, his overpowering obsession it makes him seem insane i’m so excited for his arc in this. also omg he doodlessss, say less. the brutality of this show is just perfect too the maturity has carried with the audience they really did a good job idk why i’ve seen so many people complain over little things. an adaptation as you said.
Been waiting for this reaction video for hoursss
I'm nervously excited
my dad joined me on my watch along he loves it. I'm explaining the back story of certain parts and he's following along quite nicely.

The bending is looking so good! Very powerful. Enjoying your reaction and insightful discussion as always! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
God I'm loving this series so much. Watching an episode each night with pizza and the lights turned off. Seriously beautiful art direction and I'm actually feeling for the characters. And -- yes!-- great humor too (something I wish Percy Jackson series had more of).🎉🎉
Omg the water falling on Calvin made me laugh so much 😂😂😂
I'm just so happy to be here
The intro raid was crazy awesome love them adding some more context to things we saw than us just hearing about it
this is the reaction I was waiting for! let's go! 😃
they cut so much important stuff, entire scenes and character development between Aang and Katara is missing. Also the CGI could use some work in a few spots, when Aang is in the Avatar State it looks like he turns into playdoh
this is just bring back a lot of memories
Great episode & reaction Wave Crew!
I think I watched a couple of your videos before but I finally subscribed when you started ATLA. That was 7 yrs ago wow.
The Intro of your Video is not what I expected and didn't know I needed xD Very cool though 👌
I like it better that they're not doing a shot for shot. I also like that they add scenes that are a logical progression of events that already happened and build upon other scenes and the history of some of the characters.
Wow, I've watched it already few times, and it's amazing! Fantastic live-action adaptation! I can't wait for the next season! It's action, drama, the emotional twist, fantasy, and comedy-all in one! Amazing cinematography, amazing special effects, those animals, spirit animals just amazing, and their powers, the visuals look great and the backgrounds look fantastic! They're all amazing! Gordon is a brilliant actor for his young age, and he is so cute; he has a million-dollar smile too. Dallas is a versatile actor, he's amazing actor. Kiawentiio and Ian are amazing too. Paul, and Daniel are very good too. All the cast members are really doing a great job. Congratulations! This is the best live-action adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender so far!♥️

When the kids started throwing rocks, it reminded me of the Ewoks on Endor😂
I've only watched 2 episodes so far, but I'm really enjoying it. I don't get how some people are hating on it so hard, it's an adaptation, they can't do a shot for shot remake of the original.
Exactly what’s the point they are just mad about the changes
and even if they do, its gonna be pretty boring cause what's the point of making a live action if it has ALL the same thing as the animated one. i will gladly watch the animated one, if its a 1:1.
There is a difference with having creative freedom and just completely changing the story to shoehorn and rush the story to get to the finale. Ffs they removed all character development plot points from the animated show as if there wasn't enough time to develop them:
-Aang left not because of selfish/scared reasons and felt the guilt of abandoning everyone. He left by ACCIDENT to clear his mind
-Sokka doesn't have an inch of sexism/misogyny in his body that helped them find Aang in the first place, learn and develop that women are fighters too, etc.
-Suki has been downgraded to a simp though since he's not a sexist...so that's wonderful
That's just the tip of this colossal iceberg...
Completely agree. It’s a live action adaptation
everyone has different standards
Omg the intro was so funny 😂😂
I got sick a few days ago and planted myself on my couch to watch the entire season already haha 😅😂
Honestly, I believe it’s very well done and they added good depth to the characters. The only thing for me was that sometimes the chemistry between certain characters wasn’t really built up too well and felt a bit odd.
But otherwise, a good show:)
And funny entertaining reaction, as Always, Crew Blindwave 😂
For the water bending. Yes we see Katara just wiggling her fingers at first. Then when Aang explains it. You see her moving her whole body and her arms move more flowy. Such a good detail.
"Reminded me of Shang-Chi" while the earthbender was shown. Well.. my dude Wen Wu's actor used mainly Hung Gar for his fighting scenes. That's the style most Hong Kong actors like him were practicing for a long time and also the main style used in most, if not all Shaw Brothers movies from the late 70's.
and of course dallas liu being young shang-chi lol
I call him Aron because English isn’t my first language. When I started to follow the channel it took me some time to learn his actual name, I thought it was Erin
To be honest, the title card fanfare for the show sounds sooo much like the first part of the ending credits to COD: Modern Warfare 2. I can't unhear it.
Anakin comment cracked me up 😆
At least it’s better than the movie, but that bar is so low it’s right next to dinosaur bones.
So far im loving Zuko and Sokka, it feels like they actually got the characters down, i could only imagine it's hard to get cartoon mannerisms in live action, but the writing is in point with the character
Just finished the whole season. It's a really good adaptation of the show, given the constraints of the episodes. It mostly fits together quite naturally, and I'm appreciative of what they managed to reference despite the changes in scope. Looking forward to Season 2!
I want to see the Octopus Stance Katara used in the Season 2 Finale ^^
Quality intro!!
Very good end discussion i feel alot the same
About it
This is the only review that i liked that explained everything without comparing to the animation. Other reviews compare to the original animation, they forgot, this is only an adaptation.and im glad that they reviewed it based on adaptation and not com0are it with the original.
lets get it
actors are great and the effects look awesome but the dialogue is really hit or miss imo and while sokka feels the most like himself from the cartoon he feels like sokka from s2/3 instead of the start of s1 so im not sure how much growth they can really give him
Yeah I'm actually pretty disappointed that the show is seemingly erasing Sokka's initial sexist views, because unlearning that and realizing that girls can be capable fighters (Katara, the Kyoshi Warriors) was such a big part of his character development. I'm cautiously optimistic about the show as a whole though!
@@SpockNRollyeah after seeing a couple more episodes I’m really conflicted, none of my issues with it are really that major but still enough to bug me in the moment when watching
I've never seen the original animated series or the first live action movie, but I thoroughly enjoyed this series and thought it was great. Especially the visuals and the choreography.
The part when all the air benders come to the southern temple and the fire nation kills them all. Is a sweet Easter egg for Dragon Ball
I find it a bit insulting that AtLA the kid's cartoon expected more from its audience than AtLA the adult's netflix series did
The original AtLA resisted the urge to dump all the exposition at the beginning and instead trusted that the (10 year-old) viewers could survive a little bit of mystery and confusion
Meanwhile Netflix's live action feels it's necessary to know all the information about everything before the show even starts, because why would the audience care about our characters and story if we havent explicitly told them why?
What is the audience gonna do, figure it out by themselves?
yeah that really annoyed me too
Yeah there is a lot of "tell, not show" going on in the movie industry rn. Same thing happening with Percy. They drop all the facts with a tea spoon approach, and leave no mystery to it. It's really weird how they are dumbing it down for a grown audience when a young audience is perfectly fine with subtle telling and mysterious hints.
Wait till you find out how they changed pretty much every fucking character.....Sokka is going to have 0 fucking character development.......Ang isn't going to feel like Ang from the show.....Zuko doesn't give 2 shits about getting back on his fathers good side and his sister will play a bigger role because of course she will.....
@@K000H it's interesting because the original followed a structure of show then tell
They made it important that you could feasibly figure out basically everything before it's said, so when the characters tell you something it just comes as validation of what you had already figured out, but also if you missed something you'd still figure it out
@@Shifty51991 sounds like you really enjoyed the show
My major worry(at the end of all 8 episodes) is that we're ending up with a more fleshed out Ozai at the expense of Aang's growth. The fire nation is done well but where does Aang go from here now that he's taking everything seriously from the word go. He might end up as the usual one note protagonist.
First episod was solid...I loved it. Are you guys reacting to the whole show? (Please?😅)
I binged the whole show last night and I have to say I was quite impressed by how solid it was. Not perfect by any means, and nowhere near the original but there's a certain group of characters they focus on a bit more throughout he show which ultimately adds more depth to those characters. All the actors nailed the characters for me I think, and the costume design and set design was on point. Excited to see where they go going forward.
I really liked the addition of seeing Gyatso during the avatar state scene towards the end. It was sad but beautiful.
Im half way through! Watching wth my sis but her works in the way 😭

Pretty good start for the adaptation! IMO
They did a really damn good job with this show. There are some pacing issues, there's some forced exposition and a couple goofy looking scenes but other than that I loved everything about it. The characters really felt like themselves and you can tell they put so much love and care into every little detail of this show.
I don’t know if it’s just me but the person playing Bumi sounds like one of Tom Kenny characters. IMO Tom Kenny would’ve been a great choice for the animated series to voice Bumi.
They really didn't. There are A LOT of pacing issues and forced exposition. Don't downplay that. Also, Katara is definitely changed quite a bit and lost all her characterization from the original.
@@za-ir5niin what specific ways?
I think the past tense for this form of "bend" is "bended" instead of "bent". It's like how the past tense for execution by hanging is "hanged" and not "hung".
