I'm going through welding school right now and I'm not 100% sure but galvanizing is putting Zinc on the metal to help it not rust and Zinc boils before steel melts, that's why its no good to do it without proper ventilation. That weird web might be the Zinc coating boiling but not fully evaporating, thus making the forbidden cotton candy.
Asked my teacher and can confirm it is boiled Zinc and very toxic. Also you should check the wire feed settings on your MIG machine. It looks and sounds like you're not putting out enough wire to start the short circuit.
The white spider web stuff is the result of welding galvanized metal. It’s just burned zinc. And the reason you shouldn’t weld galvanized metal is not only that it puts off toxic gas but it also lets off small particles of zinc that are harmful to your lungs if you breathe them in. An N95 mask or a respirator and a well ventilated area will protect you from the fumes good enough that you shouldn’t have to worry about being harmed.

Hey there, 15 year Pipefitter here with welding knowledge. That death spiderweb your seeing is definitely common when welding galvanized materials. Typically you grind as much of the galvanized material off as possible until you get to the base metal before welding. Working with structural steel sometimes which is typically hot dipped galvanized, you end up grinding off somewhere around 1/8” thickness of galvanized material. Its definitely not good to breath in, but it also weakens the structural integrity of your weld if you leave to much of it. If you’re welding over it, it tends to create a lot of popping and extra sparks flying. It can also kind of catch on fire and burn a greenish color. Nice project by the way!

The “spider webbing” is basically zinc floss… the piping is galvanized with zinc and I’m not 100% on how it’s formed, but I have the same issues when smelting brass with high zinc levels. Zinc tends to boil off and leaves the webbing… zamack metal makes a funky yellow webbing… one of its alloy ingredients boiling off as well… likely magnesium
The spiderweb-like substance you saw is likely zinc oxide fumes. Galvanized pipes are coated with zinc to prevent corrosion. When the zinc coating is heated during welding, it can vaporize and react with the oxygen in the air to form zinc oxide. This zinc oxide can appear as a white, wispy, spiderweb-like smoke.

I'm not even sure why drinking milk would work in the first place. Breathing in fumes would affect your lungs in the first place. You drink milk, not breathe it in. Calcium would also take a while before your body would extract it from the smaller intestine into your blood, that's why when in hospitals, you got IV drops. Having to eat or drink the medicine to work is very inefficient and too slow, and the medicine being Milk as an example. Another fun fact, to bind Calcium with Zinc, it requires them to have negative and positive charges. Calcium in Milk has a stable charge, in other words, they wouldn't even be able to bond in the first place.

I grew up in a martial arts school and almost bought one of these man catchers from brenden lais martial arts supplies but they were selling the size this video must be based on but there is another one china/ India design in history almost identical just smaller like a limb/neck catcher. That’s the one that I kept trying to find as it was small enough to kata or perform with. This takes me back to the 70s

Instead of metal claws, use a loop of cable or rope on the end, kinda like a mechanical lasso. You could use an anti locking belay device or something similar so when you get the tension on the person you can lock it into place pretty easily. It'll be a tighter fit and work with more body types. You'll have to get it over someone's head but if you catch they're neck, arm, or leg it seems just as viabke. The whole loop idea just seems more versatile to me.
5:02 You aren't too wrong with calling it a death spider web. That is zinc oxide and a lot of it is going into the air while you are welding it. You can weld galvanized steel perectly and safe if you just grind off the surface layer of the metal before welding it or if you are in a hurry you can do it in a well ventilated area and not standing directly over it
Next, you should invent some kind of foot covering that might provide protection from the sparks of the plasma cutting. You could even put hardy bottoms on them so they withstand the wear and tear associated with repeated walking. They could be secured with some kind of thin ropelike device that would allow a snug fit regardless of small differences in the sizes of people's feet. If made properly, they might serve the additional purpose of allowing people to walk painlessly over all kinds of terrain.
My high school had a plasma cutter for the welding workshop. It wasn’t one u held in your hand tho. It was automated, on a table-like grid. You would input the values and dimensions of whatever you want it to cut, lay the metal out, and the plasma cutter would get to work. Was really cool watching it do its thing. Very precise tool it is.
The simplest design is already the best. There's no need for spikes or a complicated grabbing system. You're supposed to use numbers and leverage to effectively use a mancatcher.

I believe it is meant to be used by several people, so they could incapacitate different parts of body. Like one is aiming for the stomach/chest, the other for neck (which could really dangerous ngl) and two-four other for limbs. A person simply won't be able to move away several catchers from themselves
What would you do once you have them in the man-catcher? It would be pretty hard to move them because of the size of the man-catcher and the person inside of it moving around. Besides, as shown in the video, the person can just throw the knife and still injure the officer.
Here is the thing nothing is harmless tazers used to be considered less than lethal and that status was removed same with bean bags. Some times shit happens and it sucks nothing is perfect.

Every elder lost before their natural end is a crime against humanity for the potential influence their wisdom may have. Think of all the people who went into the sciences because they were inspired by their grandparents, the world would be worse without that. Truly, we need to persecute those who harm the elderly to the fullest extent possible.
You could make a few modifications to the straight edged version and have something quite effective: 1. Modify the mechanism so it opens wider and the jaws are longer. 2. Spring load it so it snaps shut with a button to trigger it. Might want to add some padding to the inside edges. 3. Instead of a single latch position, make it a ratcheting design. This way you can catch elderly people of any size or body shape. It also means that the more someone struggles, the tighter it gets. The spring loaded ant-jaw version might not be "non-lethal" anymore, but neither are the tasers they're using now.
To piggyback: the bar being pulled by the inner pole can be used for the initial lock of the jaws, as it can be shoved into the person. That way, when the wielder "unlocks" the ratcheting mechanism, they can continue pushing against the person to tighten the jaws further. It also means if the person tries to push toward the user in order to attack, they're further tightening the jaws. That also means springs wouldn't be necessary, and means fewer potential points of fault
You should’ve made the spikes on the arms face the other direction. So that they can slide around the body easily without getting caught, and then when you close it, it grips onto them like teeth. Like the one trap in that saw movie where the chick has to stick her hand into a box thing to get an antidote or whatever and gets her arm stuck because of the reversed blades. Can go in but can’t go out.
Seriously be careful heating up galvanized steel. One of the members of our blacksmithing guild died from putting galvanized steel in his forge (he knew better, but he thought he had enough ventilation).

4:59 seems to be zinc oxide from galvanized pipe. I can't imagine it being anything else. Also had a very similar thing happening when I was welding some galvanized steel plates.
I always love when Mr. Thing does a video about something he already did. It gives me an uneasy feeling of dread in the tip of my spine when I see him do something familiar but not.
For the stabbing man scenario, some improvements that could be made : -A tonfa shaped handle to grip better and to avoid rotations with a part of the pole that goes under your arm pit to have all your weight on the pole -Larger crescent shape at the end -Having multiple people with the mancatchers against one stabbing man.
@@6105boe I think the Tonfa grip will give better control and much force when someone tries to grip and rotate it, the problem about making the pole wider is that the guy can still grab the crescent to get out by rotating it 90°. It's just my thoughts only testing can tell what's the best approach.
@@aboriginite I think so but I think one of the main problems with his designs is that the user and the armed guy have the same control over the object, both have access to the pole the same way and can apply forces the same. The user must have a better grip to have better control and apply more forces with less efforts so if the armed man is struggling, he'll just lose a lot more energy than the user does.
The key to the man catchers is the number of people with them poles. It's not just one person but normally teams of 2 or 4, making it much harder for the person to fight back.

@@vatatheoanonymous3705 Pretty sure its galvanic/zink coating getting superheated below by the steel and that off gassing, but being so thin solidifying essentially instantly in the air creating that web like material. On hot dip zink coatings that are thicker this effect is enhanced so it has to do with the coating. You can test this hypothesis by taking that stuff and dropping it into vinegar or citric acid for instance. If it bubbles and dissolves its zink not steel, since i use those two acids to chemically remove zink coatings on some parts that i cant mechanically grind. If you need to weld bolts or nuts into metal, just drop them into container with the acid and next morning those are on clean steel depending on thickness of coating and how strong the acid is. Hotter the acid more rapid it works, but there is a limit, dont go heating strong acids and always use suitable PPE with them. Just the hydroxide acid of drain cleaner will cause chemical burns in 3% concentration. Citric acid and vinegar are safe options, just take more time.
IIRC, actual medieval man-catchers really were typically used in many-on-one scenarios. Once the first one got locked on, the others would rush in and add theirs to increase the level of control. The design of the jaws needs a _lot_ of refinement, like opening wider and being shaped to funnel the target toward the center-back, plus you could do with a ratcheting locking mechanism instead of a single set-point so you can handle people of many different sizes, but it's an interesting proof of concept.
also the toothed jaws while inflicting minor injury, this reeling pain would be enough to get someone on the ground and make it harder for them to fight back. Though this would defeat the purpose of a injury free halting device.

@@eddiedemartini9961 They usually have a large group of people surround them, so someone without the man-catcher could easily come up from behind and cuff them or something. In his previous video he even talks about how they're used in some countries in Asia successfully. I don't think these are currently viable in places like the US because of guns n stuff but they could 100% still be implemented for other situations, such as an elderly lady with dementia who is moving at a slow speed.
The white "foam" is coming from the galvanized outer layer of the pipe you welded. Pro tip don't inhale alot of it, as it will make your poops go faster, and it's very hazardous. Keep up the great content! ❤ Best regards from Denmark
@@hamptergamin591 ;) it tastes disgusting, when you weld alot in galvanized partz the aluminum/zink layer creates alot of that white "foamy" stuff, so much that sometimes I can detach from the material and fly around. It's not deadly, but dangerous in continued and repeating exposure. If you work with this every day please wear air filters or have proper air ventilation, preferably with point suction for the welding smoke.
For the spikes on your mandible-like claws, you can have the serrations point towards you instead of away so that the VICTIM is easier to catch and has more trouble getting out. This is the same concept used by certain animals and sea life so that their prey will end up impaling themselves if they try to escape. Granted, if you made the mechanism still close, you would end up eviscerating your target. Thought it sounds like you figured that out when you used the forward spikes on yourself.
@@maestrofeli4259 Nah, they were getting hurt because 8 metal spikes were being inserted into their spine. If the direction was swapped, it would probably hurt more; but the spikes wouldn't get caught on anything when trying to trap your target.

Sorry to be the guy that ruins the fun, but this could never be a viable option in a police chase situation as it would mean the police running down with these like spartans as they chase criminals lol. A taser is easy to holster without affecting your movement as much.

You can add a counterweight to make it more nimble, and allow the jaws to extend wider. That'll form a shield. You can also maybe have a cross guard midway up the shaft in case they start getting close. As for preventing them from just grabbing it... I have no clue.
Suggestions if you ever decide to make a part 3. -Use Padding on the grabby part, it allows you to target a wider range of people without harming them while being able to prevent them from slipping or stepping out. -Keeping them in the mechanism: Couple of options. ** Have the bottom portion of the device twist tighten the pole on the interior, you would need to use 'oval' shaped tubes in nearly the same setup except the twisting of a lower portion of the handle would use friction to lock it in place without needing to pull them in 'all the way'. Don't make it too oval or you can't twist it at all. ** Spring load the mechanism so that springs try to keep it closed. You would need to push the grip handle to keep it open but once you catch someone the springs plus pulling on the grip handle would keep it closed which is better than using only your strength to fight them. ** Use a friction based clamping mechanism that tightens the two bars together in a vice like grip to keep the target in place. ** Use a notch based system similar to handcuffs that one way lock until you use a releasing mechanism. Once closed it doesn't open (probably the most dangerous) -Having a wider grabby part like in the medieval variations so that it's harder to get around the polearm. Would also reduce the likeliness of you stabbing them with the claws.
should've have very small + sharp spikes around the stick/handle near the grabby. The grabby also need bunch of kinda small-medium size curve spike in the middle to the back so its prevent them moving around easily. make the curve spike dull or add something on the tip so its not hurt that much but still work to make them not moving around recklessly. edit: the curve spike inside the grabby should be reverse on the other side, so when that thing got you, its hard to move forward and backward.
Honestly the first man catcher was better, the super wide angle of the catching bars meant they were harder to avoid, and the way it locked quickly and automatically when pushed into a target means it's easier to use, the only issue is the latch but I think trying to modify the first design so it can only unlock by the handle would be better than this version of the man catcher, it's just too complicated, small, and slow.
For future reference, sandblasting the galvanized portion of the pipe, then welding it, then regalvanizing is the way to avoid the weird weld bubbles caused by grime. Some acids would work as well depending on what metal you're using.
@Hoolahups bold to get it hot dipped again then yes, you can get two step galvanising spray paint here in aus called cold gal, ones an etch primer that bonds to the metal and other is a high zinc paint, along as the areas cleaned it should stop rust and blend it with the original gal. Use it onsite all the time

Mancatchers have been used in very rare occasions, and always in groups, to prevent the "grabbing the single thing trying to catch you" issue. three people with training working from different positions would be very difficult to avoid at least one grabbing, allowing the other two to move in for the non-lethal takedown
they're mostly used by riot control seemingly, and from what I can tell, they're a lot more humane than my country's style, characterized mostly by "the Geneva Convention doesn't apply domestically right?" 😂😂
I love that you've come back to this concept and really want to see this thing work, so here's a random suggestion. A lot of the time, a person will be trying to run away from the police, and not engage them. Maybe you could make a large hook for catching the person and then, with the second handle, a pair of arms that moves away from you and traps them in front of the hook. That way, it will be harder for them to get close.

I think the last prototype actually has potential. You could add some twigs or brushes and then you could use it to sweep dust around your house or leaves on the backyard. I think an invention like that could help a lot of people with their everyday cleaning. Maybe you should invest in that, it sounds groundbreaking.
How to improve the design; 1. The spikes needs to be facing the person holding the catchers so that the person being caught easily slides in but can't slide out. 2. Install a riot shield for the person holding the catcher. 3. Weld a pole at the head of the catcher facing downwards to keep the person being caught from pushing it down. 4. The locking mechanism should have different stages for different sized people, pulling it pack should lock it from going forwards but be able to keep going back without pressing the knobs. Similar to how handcuffs work.
My only suggestion is that the pole itself should have some spikes on it, not to impale the target with, but to stop the target from pulling themselves up the pole to strike the user. The biggest flaw right imo is that the man catcher itself can be used by the target to maneuver themself or the user in a favorable position.
Sorry, it's called a 'man catcher' for a reason. It won't work on women, will only catch about 60% of a woman, and the remaining 40% will mostly spell woe for you.

if someone pushes the claw down to get out, you can just pull it while its still wrapped around their legs and the fall, so its not really that easy to get out if you are willing to get a bit rough with them.

The white spider web stuff is the result of welding galvanized metal. It’s just burned zinc. And the reason you shouldn’t weld galvanized metal is not only that it puts off toxic gas but it also lets off small particles of zinc that are harmful to your lungs if you breathe them in. An N95 mask or a respirator and a well ventilated area will protect you from the fumes good enough that you shouldn’t have to worry about being harmed.

Hey there, 15 year Pipefitter here with welding knowledge. That death spiderweb your seeing is definitely common when welding galvanized materials. Typically you grind as much of the galvanized material off as possible until you get to the base metal before welding. Working with structural steel sometimes which is typically hot dipped galvanized, you end up grinding off somewhere around 1/8” thickness of galvanized material. Its definitely not good to breath in, but it also weakens the structural integrity of your weld if you leave to much of it. If you’re welding over it, it tends to create a lot of popping and extra sparks flying. It can also kind of catch on fire and burn a greenish color. Nice project by the way!

The “spider webbing” is basically zinc floss… the piping is galvanized with zinc and I’m not 100% on how it’s formed, but I have the same issues when smelting brass with high zinc levels. Zinc tends to boil off and leaves the webbing… zamack metal makes a funky yellow webbing… one of its alloy ingredients boiling off as well… likely magnesium

The spiderweb-like substance you saw is likely zinc oxide fumes. Galvanized pipes are coated with zinc to prevent corrosion. When the zinc coating is heated during welding, it can vaporize and react with the oxygen in the air to form zinc oxide. This zinc oxide can appear as a white, wispy, spiderweb-like smoke.

I'm not even sure why drinking milk would work in the first place. Breathing in fumes would affect your lungs in the first place. You drink milk, not breathe it in. Calcium would also take a while before your body would extract it from the smaller intestine into your blood, that's why when in hospitals, you got IV drops.
Having to eat or drink the medicine to work is very inefficient and too slow, and the medicine being Milk as an example.
Another fun fact, to bind Calcium with Zinc, it requires them to have negative and positive charges. Calcium in Milk has a stable charge, in other words, they wouldn't even be able to bond in the first place.

I grew up in a martial arts school and almost bought one of these man catchers from brenden lais martial arts supplies but they were selling the size this video must be based on but there is another one china/ India design in history almost identical just smaller like a limb/neck catcher. That’s the one that I kept trying to find as it was small enough to kata or perform with. This takes me back to the 70s

right 😮, I still remembered watching the guy actively hide his face and now even tho he's not showing his face directly he's not hiding anymore. Glad he's gotten comfortable towards his viewers.
Instead of metal claws, use a loop of cable or rope on the end, kinda like a mechanical lasso. You could use an anti locking belay device or something similar so when you get the tension on the person you can lock it into place pretty easily. It'll be a tighter fit and work with more body types. You'll have to get it over someone's head but if you catch they're neck, arm, or leg it seems just as viabke. The whole loop idea just seems more versatile to me.

5:02 You aren't too wrong with calling it a death spider web. That is zinc oxide and a lot of it is going into the air while you are welding it. You can weld galvanized steel perectly and safe if you just grind off the surface layer of the metal before welding it or if you are in a hurry you can do it in a well ventilated area and not standing directly over it

Next, you should invent some kind of foot covering that might provide protection from the sparks of the plasma cutting. You could even put hardy bottoms on them so they withstand the wear and tear associated with repeated walking. They could be secured with some kind of thin ropelike device that would allow a snug fit regardless of small differences in the sizes of people's feet. If made properly, they might serve the additional purpose of allowing people to walk painlessly over all kinds of terrain.

My high school had a plasma cutter for the welding workshop. It wasn’t one u held in your hand tho. It was automated, on a table-like grid. You would input the values and dimensions of whatever you want it to cut, lay the metal out, and the plasma cutter would get to work. Was really cool watching it do its thing. Very precise tool it is.

Tbf, the spikes are really all you need. He has a fantastic design that can grab someone and essentially use pressure points to subdue them.
The simplest design is already the best. There's no need for spikes or a complicated grabbing system. You're supposed to use numbers and leverage to effectively use a mancatcher.

I believe it is meant to be used by several people, so they could incapacitate different parts of body. Like one is aiming for the stomach/chest, the other for neck (which could really dangerous ngl) and two-four other for limbs. A person simply won't be able to move away several catchers from themselves
What would you do once you have them in the man-catcher? It would be pretty hard to move them because of the size of the man-catcher and the person inside of it moving around. Besides, as shown in the video, the person can just throw the knife and still injure the officer.
Here is the thing nothing is harmless tazers used to be considered less than lethal and that status was removed same with bean bags. Some times shit happens and it sucks nothing is perfect.

You could make a few modifications to the straight edged version and have something quite effective:
1. Modify the mechanism so it opens wider and the jaws are longer.
2. Spring load it so it snaps shut with a button to trigger it. Might want to add some padding to the inside edges.
3. Instead of a single latch position, make it a ratcheting design. This way you can catch elderly people of any size or body shape. It also means that the more someone struggles, the tighter it gets.
The spring loaded ant-jaw version might not be "non-lethal" anymore, but neither are the tasers they're using now.

To piggyback: the bar being pulled by the inner pole can be used for the initial lock of the jaws, as it can be shoved into the person. That way, when the wielder "unlocks" the ratcheting mechanism, they can continue pushing against the person to tighten the jaws further. It also means if the person tries to push toward the user in order to attack, they're further tightening the jaws. That also means springs wouldn't be necessary, and means fewer potential points of fault

You should’ve made the spikes on the arms face the other direction. So that they can slide around the body easily without getting caught, and then when you close it, it grips onto them like teeth. Can go in but can’t go out.
Seriously be careful heating up galvanized steel. One of the members of our blacksmithing guild died from putting galvanized steel in his forge (he knew better, but he thought he had enough ventilation).

He was far too young and spry to be a perfect test subject in this case as far as the police are concerned, but it was still good to see.
For the stabbing man scenario, some improvements that could be made :
-A tonfa shaped handle to grip better and to avoid rotations with a part of the pole that goes under your arm pit to have all your weight on the pole
-Larger crescent shape at the end
-Having multiple people with the mancatchers against one stabbing man.
Or maybe increase the size enough that you cant get your hands around it to keep a grip on it. Without making it super heavy, so just big foam tubes
Honestly the wider crescent is the main fix needed. It gives a more generous catching radius as well as having the means of catching bigger people.
@@6105boe I think the Tonfa grip will give better control and much force when someone tries to grip and rotate it, the problem about making the pole wider is that the guy can still grab the crescent to get out by rotating it 90°. It's just my thoughts only testing can tell what's the best approach.
@@aboriginite I think so but I think one of the main problems with his designs is that the user and the armed guy have the same control over the object, both have access to the pole the same way and can apply forces the same. The user must have a better grip to have better control and apply more forces with less efforts so if the armed man is struggling, he'll just lose a lot more energy than the user does.

The key to the man catchers is the number of people with them poles. It's not just one person but normally teams of 2 or 4, making it much harder for the person to fight back.

@@vatatheoanonymous3705 Pretty sure its galvanic/zink coating getting superheated below by the steel and that off gassing, but being so thin solidifying essentially instantly in the air creating that web like material. On hot dip zink coatings that are thicker this effect is enhanced so it has to do with the coating. You can test this hypothesis by taking that stuff and dropping it into vinegar or citric acid for instance. If it bubbles and dissolves its zink not steel, since i use those two acids to chemically remove zink coatings on some parts that i cant mechanically grind. If you need to weld bolts or nuts into metal, just drop them into container with the acid and next morning those are on clean steel depending on thickness of coating and how strong the acid is. Hotter the acid more rapid it works, but there is a limit, dont go heating strong acids and always use suitable PPE with them. Just the hydroxide acid of drain cleaner will cause chemical burns in 3% concentration. Citric acid and vinegar are safe options, just take more time.

IIRC, actual medieval man-catchers really were typically used in many-on-one scenarios. Once the first one got locked on, the others would rush in and add theirs to increase the level of control.
The design of the jaws needs a _lot_ of refinement, like opening wider and being shaped to funnel the target toward the center-back, plus you could do with a ratcheting locking mechanism instead of a single set-point so you can handle people of many different sizes, but it's an interesting proof of concept.

also the toothed jaws while inflicting minor injury, this reeling pain would be enough to get someone on the ground and make it harder for them to fight back. Though this would defeat the purpose of a injury free halting device.

In his previous video he even talks about how they're used in some countries in Asia successfully. I don't think these are currently viable in places like the US because of guns n stuff but they could 100% still be implemented for other situations, such as an elderly lady with dementia who is moving at a slow speed.

The white "foam" is coming from the galvanized outer layer of the pipe you welded. Pro tip don't inhale alot of it, as it will make your poops go faster, and it's very hazardous.

@@hamptergamin591 ;) it tastes disgusting, when you weld alot in galvanized partz the aluminum/zink layer creates alot of that white "foamy" stuff, so much that sometimes I can detach from the material and fly around. It's not deadly, but dangerous in continued and repeating exposure.
If you work with this every day please wear air filters or have proper air ventilation, preferably with point suction for the welding smoke.

For the spikes on your mandible-like claws, you can have the serrations point towards you instead of away so that the VICTIM is easier to catch and has more trouble getting out. This is the same concept used by certain animals and sea life so that their prey will end up impaling themselves if they try to escape. Granted, if you made the mechanism still close, you would end up eviscerating your target. Thought it sounds like you figured that out when you used the forward spikes on yourself.
I thought about this briefly and promptly realized I just invented a medieval torture device.

@@maestrofeli4259 Nah, they were getting hurt because 8 metal spikes were being inserted into their spine. If the direction was swapped, it would probably hurt more; but the spikes wouldn't get caught on anything when trying to trap your target.

I think a part of why they work so well is that you have multiple police using them on one person, so they can’t fend off more than one at a time.

Sorry to be the guy that ruins the fun, but this could never be a viable option in a police chase situation as it would mean the police running down with these like spartans as they chase criminals lol.

You can add a counterweight to make it more nimble, and allow the jaws to extend wider. That'll form a shield. You can also maybe have a cross guard midway up the shaft in case they start getting close. As for preventing them from just grabbing it... I have no clue.

Suggestions if you ever decide to make a part 3.
-Use Padding on the grabby part, it allows you to target a wider range of people without harming them while being able to prevent them from slipping or stepping out.
-Keeping them in the mechanism: Couple of options.
** Have the bottom portion of the device twist tighten the pole on the interior, you would need to use 'oval' shaped tubes in nearly the same setup except the twisting of a lower portion of the handle would use friction to lock it in place without needing to pull them in 'all the way'. Don't make it too oval or you can't twist it at all.
** Spring load the mechanism so that springs try to keep it closed. You would need to push the grip handle to keep it open but once you catch someone the springs plus pulling on the grip handle would keep it closed which is better than using only your strength to fight them.
** Use a friction based clamping mechanism that tightens the two bars together in a vice like grip to keep the target in place.
** Use a notch based system similar to handcuffs that one way lock until you use a releasing mechanism. Once closed it doesn't open (probably the most dangerous)
-Having a wider grabby part like in the medieval variations so that it's harder to get around the polearm. Would also reduce the likeliness of you stabbing them with the claws.

should've have very small + sharp spikes around the stick/handle near the grabby. The grabby also need bunch of kinda small-medium size curve spike in the middle to the back so its prevent them moving around easily. make the curve spike dull or add something on the tip so its not hurt that much but still work to make them not moving around recklessly.
edit: the curve spike inside the grabby should be reverse on the other side, so when that thing got you, its hard to move forward and backward.

Honestly the first man catcher was better, the super wide angle of the catching bars meant they were harder to avoid, and the way it locked quickly and automatically when pushed into a target means it's easier to use, the only issue is the latch but I think trying to modify the first design so it can only unlock by the handle would be better than this version of the man catcher, it's just too complicated, small, and slow.

For future reference, sandblasting the galvanized portion of the pipe, then welding it, then regalvanizing is the way to avoid the weird weld bubbles caused by grime. Some acids would work as well depending on what metal you're using.

@Hoolahups bold to get it hot dipped again then yes, you can get two step galvanising spray paint here in aus called cold gal, ones an etch primer that bonds to the metal and other is a high zinc paint, along as the areas cleaned it should stop rust and blend it with the original gal.

Mancatchers have been used in very rare occasions, and always in groups, to prevent the "grabbing the single thing trying to catch you" issue. three people with training working from different positions would be very difficult to avoid at least one grabbing, allowing the other two to move in for the non-lethal takedown
they're mostly used by riot control seemingly, and from what I can tell, they're a lot more humane than my country's style, characterized mostly by "the Geneva Convention doesn't apply domestically right?" 😂😂

I love that you've come back to this concept and really want to see this thing work, so here's a random suggestion. A lot of the time, a person will be trying to run away from the police, and not engage them. Maybe you could make a large hook for catching the person and then, with the second handle, a pair of arms that moves away from you and traps them in front of the hook. That way, it will be harder for them to get close.

I think the last prototype actually has potential. You could add some twigs or brushes and then you could use it to sweep dust around your house or leaves on the backyard. I think an invention like that could help a lot of people with their everyday cleaning. Maybe you should invest in that, it sounds groundbreaking.

How to improve the design;
1. The spikes needs to be facing the person holding the catchers so that the person being caught easily slides in but can't slide out.
2. Install a riot shield for the person holding the catcher.
3. Weld a pole at the head of the catcher facing downwards to keep the person being caught from pushing it down.
4. The locking mechanism should have different stages for different sized people, pulling it pack should lock it from going forwards but be able to keep going back without pressing the knobs. Similar to how handcuffs work.

My only suggestion is that the pole itself should have some spikes on it, not to impale the target with, but to stop the target from pulling themselves up the pole to strike the user. The biggest flaw right imo is that the man catcher itself can be used by the target to maneuver themself or the user in a favorable position.

if someone pushes the claw down to get out, you can just pull it while its still wrapped around their legs and the fall, so its not really that easy to get out if you are willing to get a bit rough with them.
