Act III: Die Walküre | The Ring Cycle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- pera North’s acclaimed concert staging of Wagner’s Ring cycle, filmed in Leeds, UK, June 2016.
In Die Walküre, it is human emotion that takes centre stage. The musical highlights are many: ‘Winterstürme’, Siegmund’s hymn of praise to the coming of spring and the awakening of love; the Ride of the Valkyries; the Magic Fire music. Above all, there is the great confrontation between the god Wotan and his favourite daughter, Brünnhilde - the Valkyrie of the title - who love each other deeply, yet whose relationship has been irreparably broken by her disobedience.

The orchestra buildup at 18:40 was the best and most terrifying I've heard.
I think the orchestra sounds more involved because they are closer to the singers.
If you are going to do a lower budget staging, this is the way to do it in a concert form. So many modern productions are an insult to the eyes. Bravo.
Absolutely! I could not agree more here.
This is marvellous - the best and most intelligent way to experience The Ring through modern Media - sheer sight&sound without the ridiculous stage effects, plywood caves and wigs of old. Its Wagner at his most abstract profound level. and what a gushing, sensual and flowing orchestra and fine genius conductor!! I like it even better than Solti's.
I agree with this assessment whole heartedly. It is precisely the case...!!! Thank you...

I hope someone appreciates how awesome this part is.
Oh believe me...**I DO**.....completely brilliant!
i love how musical parodist the late great Anna Russell described the Valkyries; "They are the noisiest women!"
And what happend Brünnhilde??? They are only doing their job and of course they are wild ones! Wotan and his power and rules is another theme.
I simply cannot contain myself....BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quite possibly the strongest vocals from The Valkyries I have heard since ENO!!! Brilliant. And Kelly Cae Hogan....absolutely wonderful!!!
And can we take a moment to mention Robert Hayward who is a wonderful Wotan....just simply wonderful! Thank you for bringing so much to this character Sir....I thank you
The is is sensational. The closing scene involving Wotan and Brünnhilde is outstanding.
Best Valkyrie singing from the 45 complete Ring Cycle recordings I have.
Yes....
which one is best overall do you think? If I had your knowledge I would take the best sections from each and mix my own perfect version. peace
@@owenelliott5742 It will take a while to do all the editing but very worth the effort. Looking forward to see the outcome. Respect.
I would like to add that Kelly Cae Hogan sounded as fresh at the end as she did at the start and THAT is what it's about!!! I am over the moon!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks very much to Opera North for sharing this production with the wider world further to one having viewed and - much more importantly - listened to each of its three Walkure acts. An exceedingly credible and honest effort, while although many of these singers might not be in the same league of those in the big Bayreuth or MET corporate houses (even if that should not of course always be an 'artistic' priority) they all serve the music well and without any pretensions. For me, Hogan's assured Brunnhilde was the standout, with, in this act, Bisset's Sieglinde and several of the Walkuren in particular being in the possession of first rate voices. Hayward too, while not in the class of Morris or Tomlinson, is, nevertheless, an able and honest Wotan, while none of these singers sounded at any time overly stretched or unable to cleanly sing the notes. As for Franes' conducting, it is both dedicated and faithful to Wagner's score, while it was frankly a relief to hear his solid and no nonsense interpretation further to one having been made to endure Thielemann's choppy and exaggerated tempos in the presumably better heeled Bayreuth recording that is also found here on YT. Suffice to say that these excellent ON performances were for far more preferable overall! With much gratitude and thanks once again, while greetings from Australia.
Kill Mr Darcy I was fortunate to see the whole cycle live back in 2016 and on their original tour of each single opera in the years leading up to that. I particularly enjoy the concert performance which can simply focus on the music without the need for any complicated stage directions. I am happy that the recording has been made available on youtube but the inevitable compromise in sound quality, particularly in some of the bass range in this Act makes me look forward to the theatres and concert halls reopening post covid19.
Well said......thanks.
"None of these singers sounded at any time overly stretched or unable to cleanly sing the notes" - well, except Hayward. He's really struggling at the end.
@@thorsten1955 With respect, you're talking rubbish here further to Hayward holding the line right to the end - inclusive of the highest notes in the "Loge Her" finale. His voice is 'thinner' in comparison to the aforementioned Morris or Tomlinson, and has, to my way of hearing (i.e. thinking), similarities with Theo Adam. There is no stain or forcing of the voice in his 'Lieb Wohl', while Hayward also sings intelligently, and knows what his instrument is capable of without trying to go beyond it. I indeed dare say he's probably better than most other Wotan's 'singing' nowadays!
@@handlebard As one who has heard and seen many Ring's, I too appreciate this uncomplicated approach, and one which reinvests a focus back on the music itself further to that often having been usurped - and this in an act which is akin to Alberich stealing the Rhinegold! - by the
often vile post modern whims and fancies of largely musically ignorant directors. The production (and one which you too seem to have much enjoyed) achieved the right balance, while not obtruding too much on the score further to the partial but pointed acting. Bravo Opera North! :)
The best act in ALL 4 !
And the arch is completed as this act begins ff and allegro and ends slowly and softly. What a trip! Great performance.
The Valkyries are perfection!
Concert version. This weekend in Los Angeles, Dudamel leads the L.A. Phil at the Hollywood Bowl with this same Act. I am prepping for it here, having never seen Valkyries, only the first of the Ring Cycle stories, a few years ago in L.A. Open rehearsals for it tomorrow morning and Sunday morning both, so I imagine tomorrow's will be just w/ orchestra, and Sunday w/ the singers. I'll go tomorrow morning, because I like to hear just the orch. part, sans singers. Gosh, you can hear Flying Dutchman all thru this Act, too ! Snippets of F.D. weave all the way thru some of the scenes.
Really impressed with Kelly Cae here. And Lee is great as always.
Love this act. Good cast. Wotan is great.
Masterpiece!
Surprisingly good rendition from the north of England, far surpassing my expectations! Yorkshire excellence par excellence. I immediately subscribed to Opera North straight ahead. Next time I visit Britain, I'll definitely jump on to the train to Leeds to pay a visit to this new Walhalla/Bayreuth.
I'd like to see a film version, with Hollywood-style sets and costumes. It would be the closest thing to the _gesamtkunstwerk_ that Wagner was looking for.
CGI
Oh, I just love the whole thing now that I can read what is going on...!!
17:16 Redemption through love, or as Wagner himself called it - "Glorification of Brünnhilde".
Brünnhilde is the only character in the cycle with a sense of decency and moral courage.
Very true. Characters who do anything whatsoever for another person, without ulterior motive, are like hen's teeth in the entire Cycle. There is Brünnhilde first and foremost, Siegmund, the bird who helps Siegfried, and who else? There are moments in Rheingold where Loge tries to be a moral guide to Wotan and do right by the Rhinemaidens, but he's ineffectual as such, and he doesn't stick his neck out for anyone.
Wonderful performance!
Hermosa versión en lo referente a la música del gran genio Wagner. Hubiera preferido escuchar la versión de concierto en vez de ver una simulación de la ópera. Buenas las valkirias en expresión de canto.
Very classy, poor Brunhild, that's quite a kneecap breaker!!!! Loved this production . My favorite ending act ever....

Obrigado 🙏
Absolutely wonderful ❤
Wonderful! Thanks a lot for uploading this act, as well as the two preceding.
I took interest in the Ring when I was 5 years old !
Very dangerous
Highly addictive :)
@@ToxicTurtleIsMad I see what you mean. As a five year old I just gotfascinated by all the Gods and Demons and knew absolutely nothing about the complexity and dangerous paths in the adult world.
Helmwige is a strong standout
I had no idea 9 sopranos could make that much noise
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha-ha-ha-ha
Actually, there are only 4 sopranos, with 4 mezzos and one contralto.
Superb.
Gracias.
(17:17) After a break of 18 years Wagner continued one of greatest melody lines of the Ring from Walküre Act I. - Heinz
Which bit in Act 1?
@@davidmathers3565 Guess it is meant The Act III, 17:17. Just the one of the great melodies in Wagner's circle. The next time it is to appear at the very final of the Circle, along with burning Valhalla melody, as a Redemption Motive .
wonderful!
I can imagine Nietzsche hearing his friend Wagners opening and thinking of Ubermensch being born
ExPlendido!
Muito obrigado!
That’s a good helmwige
Wow. Just.... wow.
Muito lindo.
Какие же великолепные женщны! Все девять!
Who else noticed the symbolism with the vultures?
57:57 Do I have a problem with my ear?
I hear too much vibrato, hence the uncertain tone. What do *you* hear ?
No. The performer has a problem with his control.
No, Hayward has a problem with his voice.
reunite the twins!!
The Valkyries are not in military outfits ?!
Why would they be
@@asrieldreemurr1988 shield maidens and all that. maybe he was expecting helicopters
Do you in the nordic mythes they are called Swanmaiden and have wings like angels. Also they brought the dead heros to walhall.

Yes, yes absolutely, tears in my eyes immediately!
