He clearly had a lot of growing up to do and he had become very jaded of celebrity and made cynical by it. Show business can really devour people emotionally and mentally and physically. The time in prison likely woke him up and humbled him.
George Michael's manager was a Nichiren Buddhist and the slogan CHOOSE LIFE that Wham wore for Wake Me Up was from a book that came out around the same time, containing dialogue from a discussion between a prominent British Dr and the leader of one of the organisations claiming to represent Nichiren's teaching of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. I'm not sure if George Michael ever chanted, but I often wonder now how different his life may have developed if he had done and continued to do as Boy George has.
I beg to differ with you, George, though I like you quite a bit. I discovered Culture Club and Wham! on American Band Stand and am eternally grateful that you have shared your music with the world. Wham! actually WAS successful in America in the 80's. Of all of the British bands played in heavy rotation during that "second British invasion", Wham! hit number one on the Billboard charts more than any other, 3 times, and had at least three other top ten hits. In fact, "Careless Whisper", marketed as a Wham! song in the US, while known as a George Michael song in other countries, was not only a number one single on the weekly Billboard chart, but was THE number 1 hit of the Billboard Year End Chart for 1985. The band also won Favorite Pop Duo or Group at the American Music Awards and sold out arenas from coast to coast. Sorry- I was in middle school during the 80's and had absolutely NOTHING else to concentrate on but my beloved George Michael, and the three charts that played on secular radio every Sunday after church!!!
