I arrived here looking up the mighty St Kilda Football Club and I found this gem. I love a good documentary. Thanks for the upload.
I had the enormous privilege of visiting St Kilda in 2003. It's the most extraordinary place I've ever been - fully deserving its double World Heritage Site status. I'd love to go back, but don't think I could tackle the road to the summit these days!
A nice piece of history 👍
As a StKilda supporter , I have stumbled across this as well . Desolate and windswept - that describes the mighty sainters over the 55 odd years , I've followed them ....
Great film
A very interesting film
OPERATION HARDROCK 1957/58 - The army did not do the work to build the radar station and its infrastructure, the RAF did! The army did provide the landing craft, however, to ferry the equipment to and from Cairnryan.
When was this film made?
Not sure what to think about the narrators attitude towards the film and the inhabitants themselves....seems overly critical of everyone and everything....
1950s stiff upper lip
It’s Magnus Magnussen, an originally Icelandic man brought up in Scotland.
No tears should be shed for the inhabitants of kilda. The men became obsessed with money and the women payed the price. It's no magic trick that every person on the island was flinging themselves onto any big ship that was passing. The people in charge forgot how to provide for the island and relied on gawking tourist money and when that dried up... Blame, religious fundamentalism, normalising rape in a dwindling gene pool and a campaign for handouts from the government that's 300 miles away because you can't incest your way into a viable society. I support any woman that left that basket case of a community
In a few places maybe (e.g. his use of the word "pathetic"), but generally I thought it was fine.
Thinking about Popeye and Safehaven watching this
Nothing like watching mankind exterminate harmless wildlife.
Naw, they're going to stand there and starve. Grow up.
We ARE part of the food chain. These folk had been living this way for a thousand years, they must have been careful about how much they took.
I know what you mean, but there's no way the St Kildans would have survived there until 1930 without it.
