A film made by Chris Mylne for the RSPB about swallows raising young at an old mill building. The film cuts out about 10.5 minutes in, mid-way through a nest-building sequence, and resumes with an egg-laying sequence. For more information, go to www.chrismylne.com.

A stunningly beautiful island.
When was this film made?
A very interesting film
Scary😊
(2:56) Between 1826 and 1827 400 men did not EMIGRATE to Canada. They were families and they were cruelly and unwillingly EVICTED from the land to make way for sheep. FACT. Otherwise a good film typical of it's time.
Correct
❤
I too went with Brathay in 1976. Agree with previous observations. The Arctic Skuas made sure you had a centre parting every day!
Many people would consider this to out in the boonies but to the right person it's the centre of the world.
Thinking about Popeye and Safehaven watching this
OPERATION HARDROCK 1957/58 - The army did not do the work to build the radar station and its infrastructure, the RAF did! The army did provide the landing craft, however, to ferry the equipment to and from Cairnryan.
This is an absolute treasure... thank you.
Thanks!
Nothing like watching mankind exterminate harmless wildlife.
Naw, they're going to stand there and starve. Grow up.
We ARE part of the food chain. These folk had been living this way for a thousand years, they must have been careful about how much they took.
I know what you mean, but there's no way the St Kildans would have survived there until 1930 without it.
Thank you.
Our society is so civilised that uncivilised societies crumble shortly after we make contact with them.
This is wonderful. I went with Brathay for three weeks in 1976. Hametown looks unchanged. At Ham Voe they had restored the house as a base. The Bunxies had not changed!
Thanks for the feedback - so glad you enjoyed the film.
Thank you.
I found a copy of a film very like this just called "Swallows", credited to Christopher Mylne, for the RSPB. The edit seems complete, but it only runs to 14mins. It has a different narration and narrator, but clearly some of the footage is exactly the same. I have scanned it from the original 16mm film which gives a nice big frame. I can send a private link of the footage if it is of interest.
Hello, thanks for getting in touch. I would be interested in seeing this other Swallows film. I’d be grateful if you could send the file (or a link) to info@chrismylne.com. Best wishes, A
@@andrewmylne1753 Hi, thanks for the reply...I have sent the link.
What a fabulous episode of footage. Magical.
Not sure what to think about the narrators attitude towards the film and the inhabitants themselves....seems overly critical of everyone and everything....
1950s stiff upper lip
It’s Magnus Magnussen, an originally Icelandic man brought up in Scotland.
No tears should be shed for the inhabitants of kilda. The men became obsessed with money and the women payed the price. It's no magic trick that every person on the island was flinging themselves onto any big ship that was passing. The people in charge forgot how to provide for the island and relied on gawking tourist money and when that dried up... Blame, religious fundamentalism, normalising rape in a dwindling gene pool and a campaign for handouts from the government that's 300 miles away because you can't incest your way into a viable society. I support any woman that left that basket case of a community
In a few places maybe (e.g. his use of the word "pathetic"), but generally I thought it was fine.
I had the enormous privilege of visiting St Kilda in 2003. It's the most extraordinary place I've ever been - fully deserving its double World Heritage Site status. I'd love to go back, but don't think I could tackle the road to the summit these days!
Great film
A nice piece of history 👍
As a StKilda supporter , I have stumbled across this as well . Desolate and windswept - that describes the mighty sainters over the 55 odd years , I've followed them ....
Why do you need fence for your garden when no one is around you
Sheep
This is an absolutely brilliant video. Thank you 😊
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback.
Wonderful to see this posted on UA-cam. I was the young hairy warden of the Bird Observatory in the film and watching it brought back so many good memories of my five years on the island. Sadly most of the islanders featured are no longer with us which makes it all the more poignant. Many thanks for making this available to a wide audience. Iain
Thanks for the comment - glad you enjoyed watching the film. Pass the word on to others who may be interested! And check out www.chrismylne.com for more films by Chris Mylne about birds and islands.
Many thanks for the feedback - and I'm very glad you enjoyed the film.
I arrived here looking up the mighty St Kilda Football Club and I found this gem. I love a good documentary. Thanks for the upload.
