- Pedestrian Crossing (1948) British Public Information Films.
Humorous road safety trailer on the correct use of pedestrian crossings, belisha beacons.
Director: Michael Law
Production Company: Public Relationship Films
Sponsor: Central Office of Information for Ministry of Transport
Road Safety and the Public:
In 1951 there were two million cars registered on the roads of Britain, a figure that rose by 250 per cent over the next ten years.
The rapid growth of car ownership in turn gave rise to government road safety campaigns.
In 1934 pedestrian crossings consisting of parallel rows of studs and Belisha beacons were introduced to reduce the number of road accidents (Belisha beacons were orange globes on top of black and white posts).
By the late 1940's their initial success and awareness was waning.
Research had shown that both pedestrians and drivers alike were ignoring the crossings.
This short film alludes to the fact by showing how to safely cross the road.
Allied to the public information campaign, in 1949 the Ministry of Transport experimented with different pedestrian crossing markings to help improve visibility.
Red and white stripes, as well as the more familiar black and white, were considered at isolated experimental sites.
By 1951 the black and white stripes, with Belisha beacons on either side of the road, were approved as 'Zebra' crossings; the first officially installed in Slough.
A year later further "improvements" were made to pedestrian crossings and the flashing Belisha beacons.
The globes originally made of glass were replaced in 1952 with plastic since children kept throwing stones and smashing them!
Here 'cause Cyriak.
Yup
Saaaame
so your comment got hearted even after 11 years of uploaded
That's epic
Breakfast.
Yeah
Literally burst out laughing at the breakfast table collision
Amazing how 80 years later this is still useful.
We need to bring back sarcastic PSAs to teach grown men how to accomplish basic tasks and act in public.
Yes
Even a new crossing the street video would be helpful. Too many people blindly walk into the street looking at their phones.
Why just grown men tho?
Cyriak sent me here.
Who else is here before this blows up because of Cyriak?
Me
this bloke is a gem!

Video was made at 1948 and UA-cam uploaded at 2008
and
Cyriak made this at 2019
Interesting to see part of how we got where we are - there's a lot of lights where old ladies, wheelchair users etc don't have enough time to cross and wouldn't be surprising if it stemmed from this 'hurry up' attitude.
The true origin of "Breakfast" by Cyriak.
Even Massingham can't resist the allure of bacon.

bravo Cyriak!
PSA: The motorist has to let you cross.
The motorist: *completely ignores the fact someone is crossing the road*
To be fair, he wasn't told to look both ways until after he almost got ran over
Were there no traffic lights? Interesting to see how crosswalks looked different back then.
I give this guy credit for his bravery. He voluntarily nearly got run over by a car during filming.
Before the 20's there weren't even many cars in Britain, it was after that people slowly transitioned from using horses as a main mode of transportation. With horse/carriage traffic there had never been a need for traffic lights, and they went slow enough that pedestrians walked in the roads where they pleased and generally could be quite safe doing so. With automobiles the speed they travelled at was new and not expected from the average pedestrian (at the time even driving 12 mph in London was considered recklessly fast and dangerous), and laws were just starting to be put into place about driving itself. One of the main concerns for cars was safety to those on the street. So the government introduced crosswalks, but it was new and not well understood, so this film was really trying to get people to both understand and use crosswalks. :)
@@ErraticConduct I've seen a newspaper editorial illustration from the early 1900s decrying the safety problems posed by these dangerous horseless carriages. It depicted a quaint little chug-a-bug pulled over and its occupants looking back in horror at the crowd racing to the pedestrian they'd just run over with their rims-and-spokes wheels. I wish I'd downloaded and kept the image, because the expressions of the driver and passengers are surprisingly powerful.
And yet they had no idea how insane the world would become over the next century.
I was honestly wondering if those lamps on the side of the road could possibly light up in red and green, and we just didn't know because they're in black and white.
Cyriak brought me here. Now I don't have any money to take the bus home.
Who knew you could make MC Escher proud with a public service video from the forties and turn it into the best drug trip imagianable. Cyriak does.
walter jr eat your heart out, this guy is the real breakfast champion

Good Film. Thanks for posting! 5*
Not sure if you're reading this 13 years on, but if you are, then I can tell you that it's Richard Massingham. He was quite a guy!
Breakfast? Breakfast.
Dispite my love Cyriak content I'm not here to make one of those overdone comments.
I'm here to say that these psa's are like shitposts before shit post's
And as a brit, I love it.
are there any Belisha beacons still in use today?
Yeah, zebra crossings need them, which make them cost apparently £30k to install in total. There's currently an argument going on because manchester want to do 'just paint' ones for 1% of the cost.
breakfast?
breakfast.
It's very very Monty python!
@Nan Yue I think Alex means the physical humour in this video reminds them of the comedy group Monty Python. :)
