    For being a self-proclaimed Chaos.Gardener, your garden is the least chaotic I've ever seen, and I wanna be like you someday! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and for always saying forgiving things when it comes to newbie gardeners like myself. I hate seed starting too and i suck at it rn, but being new in this game, I like seeing things grow first and right away for now and will apply the knowledge I learned re: seed starting next year ❤

    I was definitely feeling behind as well this season. It's been tricky to get things into the ground with the wild amount of rain and having to find the motivation to pack up my car with my plants to get them over to my community garden plot. I finally got everything planted in the ground last weekend, embracing the chaos and plopping plants wherever I could find a spot.

    • @meggrowsplants
      @meggrowsplants  3 місяці тому

      Mosquitos are definitely bad here, especially during rainy periods. I always make sure to wear an organic bug spray when I go outside. I also like to rub lemon balm on my arms and legs. It seems to keep them away for a little bit, and I just have so much of it!

      For whatever reason the ones in my garden here in Georgia just don’t care. I’ve rubbed catnip, the citronella plant, basil, lavendar, and lemon balm on me and I still get over 20 bites in like, 15 minutes. I also use a natural bug spray, any recs on what type works for you?
      I don’t have standing water so I’m just confused as to where they’re breeding and why they’re so darn bad. I’m trying the mosquito dunks in a bucket of water right now… hoping it’ll help. Thanks for the advice!

    I also love to fertilize with an organic at transplant, but once late spring/early summer hits we have raccoons roaming at night, digging up everything we’ve just planted 😩😩😩 so I’m looking for something new, like the liquid Fox Farms options since there’s no smell to their formulas. • @meggrowsplants
      @meggrowsplants  3 місяці тому

      Hmm, would the raccoons dig it up even if you mix into the soil and then maybe top with some mulch? That’s so frustrating I’m sure! Living in the city I don’t get much wildlife interference. You could use Neptune’s harvest as well in the morning, and the smell will be gone by night! But I’m sure foxfarm is just as good, I just don’t know if they have an organic option so have to be careful about dosing

    For one to shame people for not gardening the way s/he prefers is arrogant. Everybody's resources are different.
    Starting from seed is less expensive and you have a much larger choice of types and varieties. But one needs the time, space and setup to do it.
    Starting from transplants takes advantage of the fact that some people enjoy seed starting and has the resources to mass produce. Mass production of plants is necessary for genetic diversity and development of locally adapted varieties.

    I love your garden updates! Just recommend your page to a friend that needed help starting her garden. I love the term chaos gardening and now I'm the proud plant parent or 100 okras in a 15 gallon planter. Whoops 😂

    If im not behind, it's because i gave up 😂 I think that's just the NC gardening way. The heat, pests and storms just sneak up on me, no matter how used to it I claim to be!

    I feel kinda behind as well..even tho I started my seeds in april..I still want to plant a couple more crops..I feel behind cause they are all in pots and I'm in the process in transforming my backyard into a garden..so mean while my plants are out growing the pots..so I'm tryna to go fast as I can so they can breathe more in a garden bed rather then a pot. I'm in NC also.

    Ooof, I feel you on feeling behind! We had such a cold, wet spring here in the UK, a lot of my own starts got eaten by slugs. I got a big lot of garden centre starts in to replace the ones that got munched, so I really need to plant those out and do some weeding this weekend. It's such a good feeling ticking some longg overdue jobs off the list!

      Ugh, slugs are the worst!!! Have you ever tried beer traps? Thank goodness for garden centers, I don’t know what I’d do without them especially when something happens with our own seedlings!

    Beautiful garden 💖 I'm one of the folks that prefers your silly pronunciation of chamomile 😂 Have you filmed a walk through of the garden? I miss NC so much! And Squash Vine Borer doesn't bother your cucumbers? They're killing me with my cukes this year!

      Thank you!!! And yeah lol some people got so mad over it though! I was like wow let’s have a bit of fun 😂 and no fortunately they’ve never bothered my cucumbers. The stems are usually too thin, are you sure it’s borers? I wouldn’t put it past them

      @@meggrowsplants maybe not 100%. It's my first year growing the cucumbers, only my 4th gardening outdoors. I know half had what LOOKED like SVB and the other half has so many pickle worms 🤮 And people need to take themselves less seriously! I thought it was fun lol. I laughed so hard.

    Glad to know someone else isn’t a huge fan of growing everything from seed. I don’t mind direct sowing and letting things get on with it, but I haven’t found the right process for starting seeds in trays or pots as yet. I do keep trying and am not ready to give up on it yet, but it is definitely not my favorite part of gardening at this point.

    I repoted some tomatoes this month put my physalis in full ground melons too
    trelis the tomatoes cut back the nasturtium because its growing wild and beautiful the flowers are amazing 😍 but my poor beans cant get a sliver of sun with the nasturtium growing so big
    i bought two pepper plants because most of mine just arent doing very well . I got some cucumbers. i wasnt planning too, but they were on sale and looked good got some chocolate mint and chinese chives from the shop and got some pepper and marocan mint and horse radish from my neighbor. I also bought to spaghethi squash sinds mine didnt make it . Everything is growing wel it's so lovely. I'm impatiently waiting for my tomatoes. My zuchinni are finally getting there first flowers but they got extremely stunted because of nutrient deficiency

    In a hotter climate, straw mulch is better at reflecting heat than a dark mulch like wood chips or compost. Keeping the soil cooler (and damper) makes plants and soil life happier! 💚
