I'm enjoying your quilting journey! When my ex-husband retired he was looking for a new hobby too, as he was running out of remodelling projects and his classic car hobby was a little pricey. I suggested he try quilting and assured him that there were manly men who sew, knit, and crochet. To get him started I put together a kit of fabric strips, cut some 8" x 8" muslin squares, loaned him one of my sewing machines and showed him how to make a strip quilt. He's made a quilt for each of the grandchildren, has his own fabric stash and now owns 3 sewing machines. I'd say he's hooked.
Barry so proud of you for doing what you enjoy!!! I wish more men would drop the social stigma of sewing, quilting, crocheting, or whatever and just be real a real person who loves textile arts! It’s my therapy! And my dogs are my furrapy!
Good Morning from central Washington State. I started my quilting journey about 8 years ago. I am always learning new methods. One of the first things I learned was a good seam ripper is my best friend. Don’t worry about making mistakes it’s only fabric & thread😂
This is awesome…retired in 21 also…..I’m painting, sewing, gardening, taking care of miniature goats, miniature pig and miniature donkeys. Life is good.
Well done,Barry.nice to see a quilter across the pond. I have only been quilting about 10 years but, still learning daily. Just retired also so, enjoying it immensely. Quilts make wonderful memories.
Hello across the pond - I’m coming to visit hopefully in the next few years so just let them know in advance lol. Only 10 years? That is a long time I bet you do a fantastic job on them and congratulations on YOUR retirement as well!
I'm enjoying watching your quilting journey. Great way to make HST. Your Juki looks like a wonderful machine. I have always sewn on a Janome and really like them.
Hello, I’m a beginner quilter even though I been quilting for a minute. I’m 71 years young and I enjoy simple quilt patterns. You’re doing great and I enjoy watching you learn. Keep up the good work.
I am so excited that I happened across your videos this morning! I am a beginner as well and you give me the courage to try! I told my husband you and I were going to be besties lol! Happy quilting and I look forward to more videos.
Aww I love watching you learn. Always cut away from yourself with a rotary cutter it is a razor blade. I’ve never been cut but a friend told me about it. 😂🙄hugs from Texas
Hi Barry found your channel the day you did the unboxing if your Juki. Great to see men take an interest in quilting. My husband does not quilt but is very supportive of my quilting hobby. He will sometimes help with deciding what colours to use. Congratulations on starting your channel. Desley Australia🇦🇺
Thank you Desley - maybe convince him to help you trim some pieces. It’s a slippery slope after that lol. Thank you watching I appreciate it more than you know.!
What a great video. You are honest and humble about this journey. Keep on doing. You just taught a bunch of us a new “trick” for our quilting journeys.
Hi Barry keep learning and enjoying. Hello from Australia. I am 74 years old and am finally retiring from teaching. It’s been really hard to take that final step. I’ve been quilting for over twenty years and it is indeed rewarding. It is a constant learning curve. The hardest part for me is letting go of the routine of each day which going to work means and being confronted by all that free time. This time I am determined not to go back to work. All the best . Keep sewing. Mara
Thank you for watching. You have no idea how much that means to mean that you take the time to watch. Congratulations on your retirement- now more time to quilt! Yay
I am 77 and have my last private student. Hoping to have more time to make the quilts I have been wanting to make for years. Good video. You are doing great. Hi, yo your grandson!
Also, more beginner quilters need to be on here, because when quilters who have been doing things for years tell you, "this will take you an hour!" what they mean is, "someone who has been doing this for decades will be able to do this in an hour."
Those are beautiful HST's. They don't look beginner at all. But don't worry about messing up, that's all part of the journey. Just enjoy what you do, that's all that matters.
You don’t have to apologise for trying something new in your life I think it’s great that you have taken up a hobby that you like I love to watch u cause you r a beginner and u can inspire someone to try something new 👏👏👏👏
It’s great to see how much you’re enjoying this. And I like the way that You cut them where they weren’t sewn first so that if they slid you still have the sewn lines to go between. That really saves a lot of aggravation. Keep at it I fly by the seat of my pants all the time and a lot of those quilts go for charities and raffles and other good uses.
Good to see another guy who is starting to sew. These are good demonstrations for guys like us! I have found that sewing clothing is very much like carpentry. In both, we take 2 dimensional objects and carefully arrange and connect them together to make 3 dimensional objects - being careful to understand the characteristics of the 2D objects (type of wood/type of fabric) and being careful to understand the characteristics of the connecting/adhering method/tools (straight stitch length, zigzag, screws, nail, glue, staples, etc). This was initially brought to my attention by a neighbor of mine when I was showing him how I was learning to sew, and he is a retired master carpenter - and he drew that correlation and I agree with him!
To be honest, I started out as a seamstress and after my divorce, I became a machinist for this very reason. I already knew about blueprints/patterns, tolerances/seam allowances and turning raw materials into a finished product. The guys at work used to think it was crazy to make such a slanderous remark. 35 years in the machining industry, I don't think I was wrong 😊
Nice work! You'll get lots of them done once you start chain piecing. You can do one diagonal for each set of squares, leave it on the machine without cutting the thread and just feed the next set in and do all of your sets that way and then go back and do the other direction and then the other diagonal. This will save you a bit of time and thread as well. Chain piecing is my happy place, something about the repetitiveness of it is just really good for me. You'll have enough for a whole quilt before you know it! HST's are such a wonderful, versatile block. There are so many ways they can be arranged and they are just fun to play with. I love watching someone who is new at quilting learning and growing and the satisfaction that comes from that. I'm so happy for you that you have found something that you seem to really enjoy. :)
@@barryquilts , yes I love my 1/4 inch foot with a guide. I use it mostly when the fabric edge is up against the guide. I find, at least on my machine, that a regular 1/4 inch foot tends to be better if you are sewing with a line drawn on the fabric like you are here. Less drag on the fabric to pull it out of alignment. But you just have to experiment and see what works best for you. :)
This is a "Quilt Police Free Zone"!!! HSTs are also called "Triangle Squares" and next to Flying Geese are one of the most versatile design units. It was piecing short-cuts like these that fascinated me when I started quilting --- especially when you saw how these were traditionally cut and pieced. No dealing with bias edges! The other benefit of this method is that generally you are piecing these oversized and then trimming them down to the "unfinished" size square that you need for assembling into your quilt design. To cut squares to get exact sized unfinished units requires dealing with fiddly math to the 1/8th inch and no one likes having to do that, LOL! P.S. You should know that some of the best new and creative designs come out of "messing up"!
Thank you very much! I am learning something new everyday. I was just sitting here thinking about what quilt I can make first with these and I’m leaning towards a pin wheel with 2” border around each block and then about a 6” border around the whole quilt?
My seam ripper is my friend haha. Barry, I’m so proud that you’re giving quilting a try. Just took my first quilting class 2 months ago at 58. Don’t be intimidated by going to your local quilting stores and taking classes. I socialize (which I have trouble with) and get to learn new things from people who are passionate about what they love to do!
We were all beginners - you'll get better every day! And although I've been quilting for years, I still mess up sometimes. I keep my seam ripper close by! I like to make my HST's a bit bigger so I can trim them down. And don't be nervous - it's great that you're brave enough to share!
I started in my mid 40’s , I’m 50 now and have made 10 large full to queen sized quilts and 8 wall hanging quilts, potholders, shoulder bags, trivets, etc. I love quilting so much. I have a degree in fine arts, tattooed for over 25 years and am still working as a spray painter which I’ve been doing for 35 years. I hope you get the same peace excitement and enjoyment as I do, friend. Subscribed!
Thank you and that is awesome- I think I’m going to make two wall hanging in my living room before I tackle a large size quilt. I bet you have a lot of stories you can tell with your occupation!
@ lol I’ve got many stories. I’m certain your career as an electrician also have stories but we’ll digress … a wall hanging is so much fun when beginning because it’s large enough to grant you creative freedom but not so cumbersome when quilting. I’m following you and I know you’ve got this. Some aspects of this craft can be frustrating but in the end it’s so worth it. You’ve got this ☺️
You did GREAT!!!! The quilting police.... yeah, they can't help themselves.... and that's ok; sometimes they have really good (and realistic) information to share!! I LOVE my juki too.... Have fun making great memories!!! xoxo e.
Yes! Thank you! That’s what I always tell my kids - you don’t remember what you did 3 weeks ago but you remember your last vacation. At the end of the day memories are what we are left with so go make some good memories
Barry! Safety police here... on cut #2 you crossed over and cut towards your hand holding the ruler. Please always adjust so you never cut towards yourself. That blade goes through you like soft butter and a trip to the emergency room would absolutely be a drag. I own a manufacturing company and teaching safe cutting is my most important job so I am sorry for being a bummer but I would hate for you to get cut. I am loving your journey so far! Keep learning and sharing your journey.
Hi Barry. My first time watching you all the way from Lancashire, England. I've never done quilting before either, but am interested to learn. It was so easy to follow you and very precise. Great job. I'll keep watching you x
This is awesome! I am a knitter but tried to make a big quilt last year. My corners do not match up at all! I proudly put it on my bed. Just made curtains the other day. Far from perfect. Just enjoy what you do. Each project will get better and easier. Go for it!
LOVE! the vid! Cool to see other men interested in the same stuff!! small idea maybe wear a go pro on your head so we can really see the POV as you are quilting! that would be neat!
I'm definitely not laughing. You are doing fantastic. I will try to remember that trick. Thank you. Good choice on machine. I have two Juki machines. Love mine. They-purr like kittens. Many blessings
Ps I watched your latest video but didn’t get to comment yet. Steve my dog goes over to the tv when I watch your videos cause he can hear the birds lol
You did a great job. Keep at it. No need to apologize, we have all been at these first steps. Even if we aren't, we all do things wonky every once in a while. Makes life interesting.
Your fellow quilters have a saying about not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. Many of the rest of us too often get it in our minds that striving for perfection is the goal, when it’s not! So it’s fun to watch someone who is going through the same process we all did at the start.
We all mess up sometimes. You learn to use the seam ripper, adjust your seam allowances a tetch, redo the block entirely... and when all else fails, burn your worst mistakes in the firepit at midnight, ha!
Barry you look really comfortable with your new Juki machine and it is very quiet. I love this method for HST also and you did a great job explaining the process. No need to apologize we all made mistakes and we learn from them.
🎄 I'm enjoying your videos, I've been a quilter for about 10 years, and I also crochet, which is where my time is being spent lately. My grandmother taught me many, many years ago on a singer tredle machine. We were all beginners at one time, so don't be afraid to make mistakes, there are times when good things come from our mistakes. You'll find much support from your subscribers, and pay no mind to the nay sayers, just delete their comments and move on. Don’t give them the time of day. I have a suggestion for you, get yourself a rotating cutting mat, you'll find it very helpful cutting hst's. I have 2 different size rotating mats and love them. I wish you the best on your journey, have fun with it! Great job sewing those HST's 😊 Have a wonderful christmas ☃️
Thank you very much for all the nice things. My grandmother let me cut out patterns for her maybe that is what got me into this? I’ve been looking at rotating mats which one do you like best?
@barrysquilts well Barry, we all have our likes and dislikes, I'm partial to the olfa mats. I have both the 12" sq rotating mat and the 16" rotating mat as well as the 35"×70" mat, which I placed on a solid core home door that I purchased from Lowe's and use as my cutting table. I used the IKEA adjustable table legs, and this table has served me well for the last 7 years. Thank you for asking 😊
Fantastic job! I always learn something new or a new way to try things when watching others, my old mind always needs a refresher course. I mess up a lot and LOL😂! Happy sewing.
You are sewing like a pro and doing a great job! Make the mistakes, learn, and develop a style that is unique to you. Jack is my closest friend in the sewing room. lol
I have Juki jealousy 😍. I made over 100 HSTs today for a quilt design I found on Pinterest. Such a versatile block. Looking forward to see your first project.
This is impressive for a beginner. I’m intimidated by sewing on the bias (diagonal) so I have only managed 4 at a time HST’s, by sewing all four sides and cutting on the diagonal. Obviously a beginner too. Your video has given me some encouragement to try out the eight at a time. HSTs are so versatile and allow you to create some seriously impressive quilts.
Well, I just started subscribing to your channel and I think it’s great! I am actually doing the same thing as you are so far as learning how to quilt. But I like to say one thing I wish your videos were longer. Thanks!
I am e joying watching you , normal and it’s so refreshing. I’m new to in sewing, I’m about to start my journey in quilting, fun quilting, and upcycle, I have been looking at your sewing machine a while now and hope to buy, do you recommend it, are you getting used to it, no regrets,it’s huge expense for me, I’m almost feeling guilt, I rarely, in my life indulge re buying myself. I don’t want a computer machine , it’s over whelming to buy without knowing what I want and can’t see or try beforehand. Thank, you,
We to tell you the truth. My brother machine for $200 was perfectly fine and would do but I really like the foot thread cutter and I was splurging on myself. Congratulations to you for starting. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
Well done my dude, superb HSTs! I'd recommend a rotating cutting mat which will make cutting those HSTs a lot easier as you won't have to move the ruler from vertical to horizontal. Also if your machine has a flatbed extension that will give you more room to the left of the needle I personally find that sooo helpful when piecing :)
Thank you - I was a little nervous. The quilt police are sure to let you know when something isn’t exactly right lol. Congratulations to you as well. How long have you been doing this?
@@barryquilts just starting but very nervous I watching so many videos trying to find some easy to follow when I saw you starting I was like that’s me…. That is so funny about the quilt police 😂
Awesome! Thank you! Congratulations and welcome. Let me know if there is anything you didn’t understand and I’ll try to do better explaining next time - maybe lol
Good morning Barry, that’s a perfect HST, well done ! What I would recommend is using a rotating cutting mat so you con rotate the mat as you cut the fabric instead of moving the ruler, I bought my at Amazon it’s a game changer and a must have. Good luck on ur next project can’t wait to see the results.
Hi again! I’m the soon to be retired NP. You are brave to do the 8 at a time HST. It’s all bias. But I live HSTs. There’s so much you can do with them, frankly they are my favorite block. There’s two trimmers I recommend, the bloc loc but more recently I use the clearly slotted trimmer because there’s no turning with those. It’s my new favorite trimmer for HSTs. But some love the bloc loc. I’m enjoying your journey and look forward to viewing more of your videos.
Huzzah! Well done! My mom was a quilter, and she was soo good at the fiddly math bits. Me? Not so much. The thing I have gotten good at? Makin' it work. I am actively bad at "scant 1/4 inch." So I just cut everything a skosh more than what is called for. Then press the crap out of it, square it up, and move on.
That's wonderful! You were a great influence on him - I am overly manly manning it around my friends lol.
That is amazing and so inspiring!
I’ve been quilting for two years now and still consider myself a beginner!
I am sure you are very good!

@@barryquilts Wow! That's cool.
Remember this day when you see your quilt hanging in a quilt show for the first time! Hi to Steve.
That’s on my bucket list- I just let him outside but I’ll tell him you said hello 😊
I love seeing a new quilter. You will find this hobby is so fun with endless possibilities.🎉
Right now I’m finding it expensive lol. I want to buy every ruler, cutting board, etc. lol - slow down “he said to himself” lol

Yes!
@ that’s ok! I can take constructive criticisms lol. It’s the ones that are mean that I don’t care for.
Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻💖
You are so welcome
Hi Barry. My first time watching you all the way from Lancashire, England. I've never done quilting before either, but am interested to learn. It was so easy to follow you and very precise. Great job. I'll keep watching you x
Thank you very much and I’m excited to have you here on the journey!
You’re doing really good!,keep up the good work 😊
Thanks I’m trying!
This is awesome! I am a knitter but tried to make a big quilt last year. My corners do not match up at all! I proudly put it on my bed. Just made curtains the other day. Far from perfect. Just enjoy what you do. Each project will get better and easier. Go for it!
Welcome to the corners don’t match up channel lol - I am trying to get better
LOVE! the vid! Cool to see other men interested in the same stuff!! small idea maybe wear a go pro on your head so we can really see the POV as you are quilting! that would be neat!
That’s an interesting idea! Thank you
Good job Barry! I’m a new quilter also. I’ve never tried 8 HSTs at a time.
Congratulations and welcome. Now that I learned it this way it’s going to be hard doing them one at a time.
I learned something new, thank you. Nice fabric choice, looking forward to your next video.
Thanks, I have some fun projects coming up!
No quilt police here, good job. keep it up!
Thanks so much!
Practice makes perfect👍
Yes it does
As a beginner quilter as well, I love having new videos to watch! Keep them coming. Mistakes are great too! Just not the kind you can't unpick.
Congratulations to you as well. I bought my first stitch remover thingy the other day. Didn’t realize how much I needed one lol.
I'm definitely not laughing. You are doing fantastic. I will try to remember that trick. Thank you. Good choice on machine. I have two Juki machines. Love mine. They-purr like kittens. Many blessings
Thank you and I’m enjoying my Juki
Well done Barry!!! Thanks for sharing your new adventure with us!! 🪡🧵✂️💕
Thank you!
A favourite unit of mine. You are slick, well done...That machine!
I’ve been watching other quilting channels for ideas and tricks - I’ve got a bunch to try out!
Ps I watched your latest video but didn’t get to comment yet. Steve my dog goes over to the tv when I watch your videos cause he can hear the birds lol
Dude…. That Juki sounds sweet…..great machine.
I am so glad you can hear it - I love it.
Keep it up!! You are doing wonderful!!
Thank you very much much
Enjoy your new craft.
Thank you!
I'm so excited for you!!
Thank you!
You did a great job. Keep at it. No need to apologize, we have all been at these first steps. Even if we aren't, we all do things wonky every once in a while. Makes life interesting.
Thank you very much - I appreciate you! Yes, I will keep going 😎
Your fellow quilters have a saying about not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. Many of the rest of us too often get it in our minds that striving for perfection is the goal, when it’s not! So it’s fun to watch someone who is going through the same process we all did at the start.
Thank you very much and happy holidays
Enjoy your videos. Well done. 🇦🇺
Thank you very much - happy holidays to you
Great job
Thank you!
This was very enjoyable and easy to understand
Thank you - I am working to get better each time - fingers crossed
We all mess up sometimes. You learn to use the seam ripper, adjust your seam allowances a tetch, redo the block entirely... and when all else fails, burn your worst mistakes in the firepit at midnight, ha!
lol great ideal I will show a mistake I made the other day with a pillow case I made. Stitched both facing the same direction lol
Barry you look really comfortable with your new Juki machine and it is very quiet. I love this method for HST also and you did a great job explaining the process. No need to apologize we all made mistakes and we learn from them.
Thank you - filming myself sew is all new to me lol.
Great job! You make me smile, which is something this world really needs. Greetings from Dallas.
Awesome thank you so much - your kind words are really appreciated! Happy Holidays
You’re doing great!
Thank you very much
Lucky guy to have that Juki!
You are doing great! I’ll be watching.
Thank you and yes I am. Happy holidays to you!
Hey Barry, I love HST as so many ways to use them.
I was told that HST’s are the basis for quilting so I thought I better get good at them 😊
Omg I still try to avoid HSTs and I’ve been quilting for years - bravo
If I can do it - you can do it !
Hi I am a beginner quilter also. I’ve learned a trick from you to make hsts quicker. Thank you!
That is fantastic. Now I feel like I accomplished something! Congratulations on starting this journey. There is so much to learn
Oh good I’m not the only one messing up 😁 happy holidays
You are sewing like a pro and doing a great job! Make the mistakes, learn, and develop a style that is unique to you. Jack is my closest friend in the sewing room. lol
Missed you live yesterday. Thank you and I’ll talk with you more soon hopefully
Great video! You did a really good job explaining. TFS
I am trying my best to get better, thanks for watching!
I have Juki jealousy 😍. I made over 100 HSTs today for a quilt design I found on Pinterest. Such a versatile block. Looking forward to see your first project.
Oh wow! You have been busy today!
You should definitely give it a try. I think it is a quick and easy way. But then again what do I know? lol
@ I’m gonna try it. Worse that can happen is I mess up and waste a little material. Thanks.
Good job! My husband has taken over my longarm to do project linus quilts. Keep it going!
That is awesome. I hope to one day get a longarm
@ you will become addicted to it...but take it slow and enjoy the entire process
Well, I just started subscribing to your channel and I think it’s great! I am actually doing the same thing as you are so far as learning how to quilt. But I like to say one thing I wish your videos were longer. Thanks!
Thank you - I was going to ask if people prefer short or longer videos. I don’t want to bore you to death lol.
Good Work 👍 That was for me a new way of making HSTs! I got to try it out 😊
I hope it works for you. I tried it and I thought it was so neat!
Alright now. I 👀 you!! 🎉🎉🎉
Yes! I’m actually sewing finally lol.
Are you loving the Juki? It is an amazing machine.
Yes - I am slowly getting used to it
I am e joying watching you , normal and it’s so refreshing.
I am going to get one. Is there a brand you recommend?
Thank you for show I am a beginner sewing learning to quilt so this was helpful
Thank you - I was a little nervous. The quilt police are sure to let you know when something isn’t exactly right lol. Congratulations to you as well. How long have you been doing this?
@@barryquilts just starting but very nervous I watching so many videos trying to find some easy to follow when I saw you starting I was like that’s me…. That is so funny about the quilt police 😂
Howdy from sunny South Africa. Wow you did a great job with those hst's. I'm enjoying your videos, keep them coming.
It’s great to hear from you - I only hope that I continue to make them better and worth watching
You will don't worry. You've got a fabulous machine and a great audience to help you along.
Don't be afraid to mess up....we all do it!
Thank you
Hi Gary. Good job! You need a steam iron & an ironing board. I cannot sew or quilt without both and spray starch too.
I have a Oliso mini iron but using it correctly is another story lol
@ Does that put out steam? I don’t recall. They are cute.
@ yes but using it is still another thing. I’m hoping Santa brings a big one?
I am a beginner quilter since retiring as well. New subscriber and enjoy your channel!
Awesome! Thank you! Congratulations and welcome. Let me know if there is anything you didn’t understand and I’ll try to do better explaining next time - maybe lol
Very Nice work! 👍♥️
Thank you very much!
I’ve been looking at getting one. So much I can buy lol! Do you recommend a particular one or size?
I will check into those. I was also eyeing a rotating mat?
Huzzah! Well done!
My mom was a quilter, and she was soo good at the fiddly math bits. Me? Not so much. The thing I have gotten good at? Makin' it work. I am actively bad at "scant 1/4 inch." So I just cut everything a skosh more than what is called for. Then press the crap out of it, square it up, and move on.
lol - me too. My foot is a scant inch so I just move over a scant lol.
Good for you....keep on stitching.
Thank you
