  • In this really quick video I will go over and share my initial thoughts after testing out the New Sony A9 III and 300mm f/2.8 GM lens... The production quality is not the best on this video because I was really pressed for time and on location so I apologize, but hopefully I will get my hands on the A9 III again for a highly detailed review in the future...Gear used linked below and thanks for watching, Jay

      I was super fortunate to get invited to the event and it is an awesome new camera and lens 100%. Literally the next chapter in camera innovation/ technology has just arrived, and I hear ya about the 600mm reach. I did not test the 300mm with the teleconverters, but many people there did and it's razor blade sharp with the 1.4X tele for sure, not sure about the 2x... I also played with the 400mm which is double the weight of the new 300mm. It was significantly harder to hand hold with that lens, and being stuck indoors with the gear I decided against trying the 600mm which was available. Not sure if I would be able to hand hold the 600mm effectively? Maybe next time I'll try if the opportunity presents itself 👊

      A big investment for sure, but man that Global shutter tech is a huge game changer!! What camera you have now out of curiosity?

    Just from what you've explained so far, the a9 III does appear to be the best camera ever, with pretty much everything people have been asking for. I remember years ago (from the original a9), people were talking about how it reduced rolling shutter, and since that time, global shutter has been the holy grail. It looks like Sony achieved that in this pro camera. However, by far the most impressive thing is the flash sync at all shutter speeds. I don't generally pan extremely quickly while shooting, and I don't do much wildlife photography (although the pre-capture is fabulous for those who do!), but I almost always use my flash when shooting professionally, and there can even be issues at 1/200 seconds for me. The fastest I can reliably go is 1/160, and thus, in the daytime, I need to use an ND filter, putting it on and taking it off when the light changes. This new flash sync ability removes the need for an ND filter in these cases, and removes the need to be aware of the shutter speed when using flash at shutter speeds around 1/200 seconds. It also lets us catch movement more crisply, when a speed faster than 1/200 sec is required for things not completely illuminated by flash. Of course...this is also $6,000...so I'll probably get the a7 base variant with these features in around 7 years. But hey, that's something to look forward to...

      Haha, I hear ya and I also agree about the flash sync speed feature being a huge game changer! I used do the same as you with the ND back in the day when I was doing pro portrait and wedding work. This fixes all that and allows for so much more creative opportunity's with a way easier workflow as well. It's sort of like cheating at this point the technology is getting so good. I am very curious how long this will take to trickle down to a 7-series type camera as well. The issue I believe, but honestly don't know, is the cost of the sensor. We have not gotten a stacked sensor in the 7 series yet either, and that has been out for a long time now. The stacked sensors are a lot more money to manufacture I think, and I would imagine this new sensor will cost even more than that. If I were Sony, I would consider making a crop factor version of the A9III for way less money, then Sony would own both formats with global shutter and also offer a way into global shutter tech for us regular hardcore enthusiasts/ pro's, that just can't justify that $6k cost... I really appreciate the comments and always good to hear from you 👊 Jay

      @Rationalific 7 місяців тому

      @@Jason_Hermann You make a very good point about the a7 series and the lack of a stacked sensor. My 7-year comment might actually be on target... It does take a lot of time (more time than I'd like, with technological improvements being much slower than in relatively recent prior decades). I think you're right that Sony should work more on its APS-C series, which has been lacking. I have a feeling that Sony knows that they will have a lower profit margin on those, so they put less effort into them, but I think a really good APS-C camera that is at least somewhat reasonably priced would still make financial sense to them, and give them a further reputational boost by putting them in the lead in both formats. Thanks for your reply, and have a nice day!

      best camera ever!? that is like saying the best car ever. not so sure there is such a thing since it subjective. global shutter is a huge leap though. I own the A1 at the end of the day the only thing A9iii could do better is is no rolling shutter everything else the A1 and some other cameras can do, it just means more work. A9iii is a beast of camera though & since video is more my jam I might consider getting rid of the A1 and getting A9iii, perhaps.

    • @Rationalific
      @Rationalific 7 місяців тому

      @@garfieldmtify When saying "best" anything, there is always an aspect of subjectivity, as the value that one places on each feature can differ. However, such a determination can also be mostly objective. For example, could the "Lada Riva" (you can look it up) be the best car ever? Normally, there are certain features that are important. For those who prioritize megapixels or 100 ISO over all else (they take individual staged shots of static products always with perfect lighting), then the a9 III will not be the best camera for them, and the a1 is likely to be better. However, I think that all-around, including sports shooting and shooting moving objects with a flash, a case can be made for the a9 III. At any rate, we are comparing the best of the best. It is possible to make a case for any camera in the 95th percentile, and I'd place both the a9 III and the a1 there.

    Great content. If you were to buy a camera today, would you purchase an fx3, Canon R6 Mark 2, or Zv-e1 for vlog/podcast, doc content, or any other suggestions? I also like to take pictures on occasion. Did you sell your Sony fx3

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 місяців тому +1

      I would go with the FX3 or the Canon Ra6 Mark II personally. The Canon will be the best for photos due to awesome viewfinder and better ergonomics, but the other two Sony cameras will be better for video with the FX3 being the best option for the built in fan...

    Will the memorycard be fast enough? How many picture can you take before the memory is full?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  7 місяців тому

      Sony gave us 80GB CFExpress Type A cards to use and yes they are more than fast enough. The cards will fill fast if shooting at 120fps , but most people will only use that in very short bursts... I had the camera set to 20fps, and then used the C5 button which turned into 120fps only when the button was held down in combination with the shutter button. That feature was awesome also! By the end of the 2 hours my card was very close to full, but I was taking 4k/120 video as well as lots of photos.

    • @DanielBengtsson
      @DanielBengtsson 7 місяців тому +1

      @@Jason_Hermann is cfexpress typ a compare to type b a hardware thing or or software one ie will a future software upgrade allow type b cards in the future you think…? As a sportsphotographer you will probably use 120fps alot on and off… :-)

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  7 місяців тому +1

      It's a hardware thing and Sony went with Type A for the Alpha cameras... I would consider using 120fps sparingly, or you can invest in a huge memory card... You can also use a regular SD V90 card, but it will just take a bit longer for the buffer to clear is all. the CFExpress cards are so fast the buffer clears almost immediately which is clearly better, but they are very expensive. All the best, Jay

    A 100- - 300 would have made more sense to me (perhaps you as well) than a fixed 300. Still very much like Sony except for them being late with firmware updates to A1 & A7Siii.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  7 місяців тому

      Yes for me a 100-300mm would make more sense, but Sony wanted to finishes their Pro GM sports shooters line-up for the upcoming Olympics I suspect. Also a 100-300mm would either be a slower aperture, and/ or be a lot more heavy than this new lens... Sony has been dropping a few lenses a year, so perhaps we will get another new announcements soon 👍 I would love to see a 100-500mm similar to Canon's RF L, or maybe a new 200-700mm lens or something crazy like that...

    Amazing camera! Not one I could afford, but I’m excited for the Pro sports and action shooters. As far as the pre capture. Sony is late to the party. Olympus had the on the OMD-EM1 6 or 7 years ago. It will work much better with the global shutter. There will be no rolling shutter problems.

      Sony might be late to the game as you mentioned. My question is does it really matter with M43 system? Hey I love M43 system, still have my Panasonic GH5 which is beast of a camera for so many reasons. Sadly the low light & auto focus made me move on to full frame. Yes the GH6 is better and there is another Panasonic with even better auto focus, I have already move on and everyone know this camera gear system game can be a very expensive one. Would love to jump around with cameras or have more than one system, too expensive and the learning curve I do not have the time to truly invest. I like what M43 today is doing though.
