  • What is Logical Volume Management (LVM) and how it compares to the Standard Partitioning Scheme in Linux. Should you pick LVM or Standard Partitioning? Learn about Logical Volume Management (LVM) vs Standard Partitions in 2022 using Linux.
An LVM can give more flexibility compared to a Standard Partitioning scheme because it allows you to make changes to the file system after while the disk is live and without having to unmount anything. An LVM shines even more with the ability to add storage from multiple different devices in the same system and not from just one storage device.

Nice presentation. You pretty much explain the situation I experienced with non-lvm in virtual machine. After that fiasco, I switched to LVM. Thanks for this video.

As usual, an excellent presentation! In April of 2022, I plan to install the latest Ubuntu LTS and have been looking into LVM versus a Standard install. My server is for my home network. Currently, I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Originally, I had one hard drive, subsequently added two additional disks. Based on my initial research I'm most definitely leaning towards LVM. Thanks for a great explanation.

You’re welcome! Glad it helped clear things up. Sounds like you’ll highly benefit with an LVM setup.

Hello there, cool video. One question please, if one volume fails, what happens to the system?

Thanks. If a volume fails in a group I don't believe the group is accessible anymore because it can use any of the volumes in the group to store information. You would basically want to make two raid groups that way they mirror each other at all times and you would have another group to fall back on.

LVM is used to set up RAID1 mirrors for example.
