I love delena so much its because their love builds up slowly whereas stelena was a couple in s1, delena created that perfect build up of hating each other to being friends to falling in love which makes me love them so much. They really care about each other and it is the best ship in any tv series I have ever seen.
I always thought their breakup was the result of too much pressure on the relationship. Damon feeling the need to live up to Stephen, and then freaking out when Enzo says, “hey this isn’t who you really are.” Then Katherine twisting the knife further, etc. That’s why they’re all over each other afterwards because the pressure is finally off. This also allows them to figure out their own relationship style. Like when Elena gets in the car with him at the end of series… that’s not necessarily something I could see her doing with Stephen. And Damon smiles because he knows she’s a good match for him because she’s wild and impulsive too.
I love Damon and Elena when they're rabid and talking on the phone. I love their conversation about how much control they have over each other. This is what Rose meant when she was talking to Jeremy in season two. Damon could be the worst thing for her, but he's not. He won't let Elena be like him. He'd rather be like her. Because he was like her.
because he was like her. yes, when he was human he was very much like elena, 'too' compassionate. and in other convos like i think 3x18 they sort of talk about how that's a trait they both have and it makes them a 'weak link' (elena saying her compassion made her weak in regards to rebecca and the originals) and damon cuts it out of himself because people (elena in that scene in particular 'maybe thats the problem'-his love for her ruining the plan) tell him it makes him a weak link. and elena has people taking over her compassionate moves and preventing them. damon has always felt too much even when vampire to the point of denying it completely at times, and pretending he isn't feeling by translating it into 'inhuman'/'unfeeling' actions.. which actually show his hand. anyone that can see beyond shallow surfaces can tell damon is a deeply sensitive and emotional person. and he did admit at one point, in a time of extreme stress where he was unthinking when he said it, that he missed being human more than anything. but his vampirism he adapted into a coping mechanism for protecting himself from hurt and being a weak link to other people. his vampirism is all quite human actually. stefans vampirism had no human elements to it whatsoever-it was either turning off his humanity or consumed by the monstrous impulse. i believe if elena had no people in her life to help her and was abandoned and abused (whitmores) the way it was for damon, she would have been more like damon and pretty much function as katherine.

Whereas when Damon and Elena lie, when it comes out they really talk about it.

Stelena endgame would be like ordering salad at a steakhouse because you’re on a diet. I could tell they didn't stand a chance in S5. They could've used Stefan's amnesia to pull Stelena back together because Elena was nearly kissing him while taking him back down memory lane. They could've used that whole bit with the fated doppelgangers, but again, they chose not to. Somewhere between S4 and S5, they took Stelena endgame off the table.
