As a huge Lost fan, I must say that they did not make it up as they went along. They had an ending planned for a long time, but the network wanted to keep the show going forever ala Grey's anatomy. It wasn't until must later in the show that they were allowed to end it. There are reasons why the show is what it is, and very little is because the writing was bad. The writing was pretty solid, the circumstances were not in their favor. Still my favorite show though. And watching it without all the hype is a lot better, than what I imagine it would have been like to watch it while it was airing.
