My 3x great grandmother’s brother and two of her brothers-in-law were killed at the Nueces and are listed on the monument. It’s a sadly under-told story in Texas and Civil War history.
How sad to move across the world just to get caught up in our Civil War. My ancestor, Matthias Zix, came from Germany to New Alsace, Indiana as a child. He fought in the Civil War on the Union side, ended up in a confederate prison camp, and then died in the Sultana steamship tragedy as he was being sent home to Indiana after the war.

Thank you for sharing this story! Hopefully you get to visit the monument someday. Thanks for watching!
