If only Nancy and Mei has something in common, something to bond over like, hmm, I don’t know, the fact that they were both once falsely accused of arson?? That bothered me throughout the entire game. Assuming this is set in the same universe as all the other games that would be the most obvious thing for Nancy to do to get the alibi and gain her trust
For me I think the killer of this game is that it didn't leave me with a sense of excitement for the next game. I don't want to play another game like this one, it felt like a chore rather than an entertaining experience
Look, if you didn't know anything about this game series and you just stumbled across this, it would be fine. However, it's impossible to properly assess it without knowing the context this game appears in. This game was teased for *five* *years.* The lack of puzzles, and the terrible character designs and animations are what make this so disappointing. Go back and look at the character designs from the old games. Look at the expressions and animations of Dagny from Sea of Darkness. Are her animations a little over the top? Yeah, but they still seem like movements a real person would make. When she's confused or exasperated her arms stretch out, which is a movement that feels connected to the emotion she's feeling. In this game, characters just flail around. None of the animations seem to fit what they're discussing or what they might be feeling. It's jarring and distracting. Not only that, but comparing the facial expressions of characters from the last few games to the characters in this game. For some reason these new characters have dead eyes. The lack of puzzles is what really bothers me, though. As just any other game, this wouldn't seem like a problem. But this is a *Nancy* *Drew* game, and the puzzles are vital to the gameplay of the series. The best games of this series manage to connect the puzzles to the overall story and mystery. One of the biggest criticisms of Shattered Medallion was the fact that it felt like a bunch of random, disjointed puzzles that don't further a real plot. A game like Phantom of Venice managed to mix puzzles, mini-games, and story in a fun way. Same thing with Shadow at the Water's Edge. This game feels like endless dialogue with a tiny handful of puzzles. It just doesn't feel like a Nancy Drew game at all. I sincerely hope that they correct these things, and continue to make games. A series of Nancy Drew working with the Hardy Boys at a private detective agency would be amazing.
Handful of puzzles is being generous even with the "tiny" added on. There are as many puzzles in the game as a 2 year old can hold fingers. Which is to say, less than like 5.
I made it through the whole video while meal prepping and cleaning, go me. Awesome review, Michael. I agree with your critiques, though I thought your final rating was pretty generous! My main problem with this game, I've decided, is the lack of puzzles. I didn't run across a single one of the optional puzzles in this game and I feel like I missed half of the game because of it. Why were they optional???????????
After hearing about Ned and Nancy going somewhere tropical together, I think the next game should involve the two of them going on a cruise together, and something bad happens while onboard. We can finally see what Ned looks like, he could legitimately help, and a cruise ship could have really cool places to go. It's silly, but I'd play it!
@@patrick_btmn Yes This Game is pretty bad compared to most of The Other Nancy Drew Games but The Shattered Medallion is The Worst Game in The Entire Series The plot for The Shattered Medallion makes 0 since
A big problem I had with this game is how heavy-handed it was, both in the message and the and the story. Message-wise, the story multiple times had characters (mainly Nancy) explicitly talk about how awful it was that the witch trials happened, instead of letting the historical facts and prejudices still present in the town show that. Other "messages," such as those out-of-character bits Nancy says about "witches were herbalists" and "people are irrational," felt like messages that whoever was in charge of the game's story wanted to push in the game, and they weren't subtle (or, importantly, in character) at all. And regarding story, while the Shawking Plawt Twists were one problem, where they seemed to be in there to surprise the player rather than to fit the story or to let the player figure it out, I also thought it was heavy-handed as to which storylines it wanted to advance in future games. Namely, I got a strong feeling that whoever's in charge wants Nancy to date Frank instead of Ned... and given this comes one game after _Sea of Darkness_ had a significant Nancy/Ned storyline, had Ned tell Nancy he loves her, and _gave the player an award_ for having Nancy tell Ned she loves him, is INCREDIBLY ANNOYING.
(Sorry, I know this response is coming a year late) The Nancy/Ned with hints of Nancy/Frank storyline was legitimately my least favourite part of this game. The only way I’m going to be okay with this completely contrived tension (I especially hated “Oh I forgot to call him back!” No, I called 50 times, he never picked up) is if the next game is focused on Ned and Nancy taking that couple’s vacation together and solving a mystery together, bonding closer in the process.
One of the things I don't get is how at the end of the game the LAWYER Alicia Cole spends five minutes vigorously denying all of Nancy's accusations, only to randomly just go ahead and confess to everything in front of everyone. Like you'd think she'd know better than to do that, right?
I've been playing ND games for over 15 years and I was seriously disappointed in this game. The dialogue was bad, the plot was bad, the puzzles were bad. The game BARELY ran on my computer, the same computer that runs Sims 4 and all its expansions with no problems. The voice acting by the new Nancy wasn't terrible but there was definitely nothing that stood out with her voice. After ALL these delays and miscommunications from Her, you'd think they would have come out with something better. It honestly felt like this game was made by an entirely new team of people who had no experience making any of the other games. That's how starkly different (and bad) this game was compared to any of the previous titles.
Your review is fantastic and it’s constructive criticism without being mean. It encompasses everything I thought as well. Also, idk about anyone else but after all of the miscommunication/missed calls with Ned in the game, I fully expected him to be revealed in person for the first time at the end and the game totally disappointed :( we didn’t even get a new photo of him! They used a grainy version of his old photo. I feel like Her missed a really cool opportunity to further their story and treat all of the long-time players who have wanted to see him.
To the contrary, it was HELPED by the 5 year wait. If it had come out 6 months after Sea of Darkness, people would be going even more nuts. After 5 years, at least there are some people determined to like it no matter what.
Hopefully HerInteractive will take this as a learning experience and do better with the next one. I remember being super happy for them when they first announced that they were going to incorporate being able to freely walk around and that they were using a new engine. While I am disappointed with the end result, I do think that they can come back from this once they work out the kinks.
LOL, people who did 30 successful games need to learn. That might make sense if they;d made the game, but they didn't. They outsourced it. It's the people they outsourced it to that need to learn.(Assuming there is a next one and assuming the same people do the next one).
This game was trash lol. I have noooo idea how anyone could think these graphics are acceptable, like Jesus Christ you must have low standards. I would literally rather play any of the 90s games in a heartbeat they like miles better. I’m so so disappointed. Especially after how BEAUTIFUL sea of darkness was. I grew up on these games they meant a lot to me. Sighhhh
The game mechanics are just too bad for it to be above a 5/10 in my opinion. I’m a massive Nancy Drew fan but this game is like a 3/10. The textures are horrible, crashes a ton, looking around doesn’t feel good, etc.
It seems to me that Her Interactive tends to overcompensate. Fans started saying "Don't you miss the old games when Nancy would say "Hmm" when she looked at stuff?" So then they made her say it all the time in some of the newer games. I'm replying LIE right now and Nancy says "Hmm" so many times it's annoying. Then fans said they wanted games that focused more on characters and plot instead of being a game of puzzle after puzzle. So they made Midnight in Salem have very few puzzles at all. I give Her Interactive a million gold stars for listening to fans and incorporating our suggestions into their games. It doesn't seem like too many entertainment companies do that. However, they seem to take it too far sometimes. A request for "More focus on characters and plot" isn't the same as a request for not having barely any puzzles at all. I think if they didn't go so overboard with trying to appease fans' desire for more characters and more character interaction, they could have also focused on the other things that also matter (controls/gameplay, graphics, making good puzzles, etc.) and MID could have been a better game.
That was a comprehensive and awesome review! Took me a couple sessions, but I enjoyed all of it. Thanks for putting your thoughts out there. I was underwhelmed by this game, but I still want more Nancy Drew games.
I haven't had a chance to get my hands on the game but I will soon, and then I'll see what I make of it. But I think we're all wondering "What now?" For over a decade, we we're conditioned to expect two ND games a year, and it's obvious we're not in that golden age anymore. It's not worth getting worked up over. My intuition tells me the franchise isn't dead, just taking a well-deserved rest. Nancy's been around for 90 years, she isn't going anywhere. Still though, it's worth asking what Her Interactive's next step is.
I have very mixed feelings about the game. I hate to ditch ND games just because this one was so horrible-I’m in love with these games-or at least I was. The worst things in the game were the character graphics and movements (not backgrounds, those were great) and the unnecessary dialog. Otherwise it was ok. I felt like it could be even longer, since we waited so long for it.
Me finding video half an hour before I should get to bed not knowing the length: Oh great, I'll watch before going to bed. Sees length: Welp. Screw sleep.
I think the story line was great and that the voice acting was exceptional, but I also think that there wasn’t a lot going on at points and the character designs do seriously need some work. It was a fun game but I think HER has got some work to do!
If I were a computer game program and could figure out how the old games were made, I would re-make MID in that way. Like recreate little, important scenes from the game in the original format to show HerInteractive what it could have been.
i think there were a few more references to previous games. you had suki in olivia's shop from shadow at the water's edge. i can't think of any more right now but i'm sure there had to be more. i enjoyed watching this review!
Is there any chance that Simon & Schuster might pull the Nancy Drew license from HER, or at least not renew it when the time comes? The Nancy Drew franchise has some value, and it seems silly to leave the license with a game company that doesn't make games when there are other companies that are willing and able to do the job. We used to have reasons for preferring HER to make the games rather than someone else, but none of those reasons apply any more. HER no longer has Lani, they no longer have the writers that made the old games, they no longer have the production team, the game engine, the CEO's who oversaw those earlier games and knew what a Nancy Drew game was supposed to be. All of the advantages they had over other companies are now gone, while their negatives remain (some very bad customer service, bad faith dealings, and an inability to actually turn out any new games). I seriously think that Simon & Schuster should pull the license.
1:19:50 Yeah just imagine you're playing Midnight in Salem and there are like the minigames from previous games, like Monster and Raid felt totally lazy in Shattered Medallion, but in Midnight in Salem I think it'd be a comfort
My biggest irk is the "photographic memory". In other games when something is revealed that I wasn't expecting, I usually think "oh, maybe I missed that?" Or "That conclusion makes sense!" But this photographic memory was so random that I was mad. I knew for a fact that I didn't miss that earlier, and there isn't anything to justify that conclusion. It reminded me of the Kapu Cave game, where the plot had to be described to me. Yet, I am less mad then that whole game's random plot THAN THIS ONE LINE IN THIS GAME.
Nice review, I agree with a lot of the points, although, I personally would have given it a slightly higher score. I'm probably a bit biased because I value the story of a game over graphics and puzzles, though. The new changes with adding text messages and background characters were fantastic, and Nancy's new voice actor is personally my favorite. However, the stationary animation for Joe drove me bonkers, and hints would have been a great addition, just in case. I didn't have many technical issues either, only some lag which is normal for my old, junky PC.
The lag/long loading times is explainable. It happened with almost everyone who bought the game lol. If you noticed, this game despite it's lesser graphics and basic gameplay, is larger than every other ND game by a lot...
