Aleary watched all of your videos quite a while, also I've subbed to you =) at the moment I'm playing FF3 steam version and trying to get all achievements next will be FFV I'm shocked that SE removed FFV from steam to replace the FFV pixel remaster, I'm so lucky I bought the game before they removed without knowing they would do this, now people don't have a PC version of the remaster, only through iOS/Android or piracy pc version, this is so sad to know, FFVIII remaster has a problem with FPS drops why SE are poorly handling a so much loved old versions franchise? For me 6 is my favorite hands down. I would love to see them remake it but not like 7. It would be great to see it remade in 12s graphics. So that we could get the same game with slight tweaks and get the full package all at once. Not in pieces. Also for the love of God keep Tetsuya Nomura away from the project. He doesn’t need to be involved at all on 6 of it ever does get a remake!

I think IV should get the next remake. It's a simple story, but the core themes will never be outdated. Guilt, love, jealousy, and the capacity for evil within every person, but also the hope of redemption. The character designs would look incredible on the PS5. Imagine Kain's shimmering crystal dragoon armor, or Cecil's flowing white hair after he frees himself of the dark knight helm. Imagine going to the underground kingdom of the dwarves, or the indescribable land of summons, or even believe it or not the moon, in realtime 3d rendering, with the full benefit of the best modern hardware. Even people who have never played Final Fantasy IV would want to see that

Goddamn right, dude! I've been saying FF6 is the next one that needs to be done, mainly because its the only one of the series aside from 7 that did not reach its full potential. All the other games are as good as they're going to get for better or worse. And 6 has a deep emotional story with moments and images that the SNES tried so hard to bring to life, but ultimately was just beyond its hardware. To see the opera realized in full cinematic HD gives me legit goosebumps and throat lumps. Also, it'd be a bit simpler to split up. FF7's story works best as a trilogy (Although that second part has a LOT of content, so its feesible to split it into 2 parts), but 6 could be accomplished in just 2 games. World of Balance and World of Ruin. Imagine the freeform open world aspect of the WoR given a fleshed out, structured form with a story that serves as a sequel to the previous game...which ended with our heroes losing a' la Empire Strikes Back. Top notch analysis, dude. I REALLY hope Squeenix pulls the trigger on that one. I bet it would get better reviews than FF7R, honestly.

And yeah, it'd be incredibly hype for a new generation of gamers to beat Ultima Weapon at the end of World of Balance only to FAIL to save the world and then have to wait years for the sequel! Real "Infinity War" moment there! 😂

I would love to see Celes' somber face in glorious 3D. She was on some deep parallel to Terra who was half-esper, who could learn magic naturally, while she was infused with artificial magic, by the empire. Her Runic ability was so damn useful. Also worse off is, Locke had to choose which one of them in the end.

@@Altercate Something else I was thinking about that the AAA treatment could really nail, is Celes' suicide attempt. So, we know her character theme is the same as her aria, but there's that little semi-turbulent intro that comes first. What if that is saved for when Cid dies. I imagine her coming to feed him and the background music fading to silence. She tries to get his attention a few times to no avail. When it finally occurs to her what's happened, that intro plays in full orchestration as she drops the plate of fish onto the floor and stumbles backward, maybe knocking over some items from a table, her face twisting in fear, shock, and anguish. She steadily approaches him and holds his hand with silent tears streaming down her cheeks as her actual theme begins to play. She can deliver a monologue through sobs, and a small montage can play out of her giving him a proper burial. Then crossfade to her climbing the hill to the cliffs, all while this theme is playing. The original game used star effects to symbolize her tears, but now we could see them in full HD. There's so much they could do with that scene, and if they split the game down the middle thats like the first hour or two of the second game.

    • @Altercate
      @Altercate  2 роки тому +1

@@pillowpants1984 Beautifully put. I'd love to see that! 😍 The first time I played the game, I didn't know you could save Cid, and it really broke me when he died. I could feel Celes' helplessness and sorrow. It was so much more powerful for the fact that you actually have his life in your hands... It's not just a cut scene you have no power over. In a remake, I do think Cid's death should be canon, though, as it makes for a much more powerful motif, and really drives home the anguish and despair of the lowest point in Celes' character arc. I don't know, I guess I just have a thing for tragic characters... 😂

And it turns out FF1 is the one that gets remake instead. Though your arguments were still valid since Stranger of Paradise looks much more like a brand new game instead of anything based on the original NES title.
VI is objectively probably the best option for remake, but I would be little apprehensive about switching from the cartoony 2D pixels that I know and love to some hyper realistic 3D rendering and real time combat. Remaking VI would be a risky project and very easy to mess up. I would personally love to see remake of FFV with more modernised job system and innovations on gameplay, but I doubt it would happen as the title just wouldn't generate much hype around it.

IV isn't my favorite, but it's up there. I actually played it in the early 2000s, over a decade after its initial release, so the impact on me wouldn't have been as huge as it had been on people who played it when it first came out. However, I was still blown away by how effective the storytelling was for its time and how brilliantly the music captured the mood of all the significant moments in the game. I think VI should be remade as an MMORPG. It would tell more or less the same story but with all the original characters as NPCs and in story scenes. Scenes like defending the Esper could be huge multi-party events and there would also be the possibility of continuing the story with expansion packs.

Great video. I do think that FF12 should have become a major contender, though. This is one entry that brims with ambition but falls short not exactly due to execution but - in my opinion - on the account of missing content.
    1. Adding more cutscenes with some bonding between party members would be a good start. The cutscenes that are there are good, but there are not enough of them. I do feel that we are missing: bonding between Balthier and Vaan - at the end out of the sudden Balthier decides his ship would be the safest in the hands of Vaan. But when did he reach this conclusion and why? Another case is Bash and Ashe. Also there should be also some general events that would make the groups come together as a team.
    2. Since characters are essentially on the run, add some tension elements such as actually being hunted by someone and having to maintain a low profile. Perhaps add an element of choice and consequence here.
    3. Give more backstory to the most intriguing characters e.g. Fran's story was awesome, but it was short and ended abruptly never to matter in the second half of the game.
    4. Making side quests such as excellent monster hunting somehow related to the story would be another step. As awesome as these quests were, when spend too much time doing them you forget what you were supposed to do in the main story.
    5. Refining combat so that you could program gambits as before but switch between them as easily as between paradigms in FFXIII would add ease of use to gameplay without sacrificing its complexity.
    6. Getting rid of all fetch quests or expanding upon them in the vein The Witcher 3 did with its content. In the witcher 3 even quests that came down to moving an item from one corner of the map to another had often heartwarming or heartgripping story to tell (e.g. the granny and the frying pan quest). Expanding it would remove tedium and give more opportunities for the cast to show their characters.

I agree that FF12 had a ton of potential, and it's kind of heartbreaking how far short of that potential the game fell. I have tried the game twice and never could get fully into it due to some of the reasons you mention such as the lack of enough party bonding cut scenes and a feeling like a lot of the story wasn't integrated with the gameplay. I'm going to give the game a serious playthrough soon (as I'm slowly working my way through the main series for my retrospectives) and will see how I feel then. @@Altercate Good luck! I finished FF12 Zodiac Age on my Switch just a week ago. When the original was released, I remembered I had fun, but I did feel the game was overlong and rushed to finish it at the end.
Now, when I played it it struck me how many great ideas those guys had, but since they were first to implement them, they fell short.
I mean the main story is essentially the Game of Thrones (lite) before the Game of Thrones became popular.
The dialogs - when they happened - were not bombastic and brimming with emotion - like in stage drama - but they did sound like normal people talking about their predicament, like, they had genuine psychology going on, which gave it all a sense of realism.
The main villain was finally far from 'Mwhahahaha, I'm gonna explode the world, because kids didn't play with me and I have mother complex' I'd even argue, he was *right* in his ideology (though still evil, because of the execution).
Monster hunting quests clearly laid the grounds for... Monster Hunter.
And so on, and so forth.
Sorry for this overlong post again, but I do feel need to share my rekindled passion for this entry. I feel that for FF12 the devs failed only because they did not have the know-how yet as they were pioneering so many things. For this reason, out of sheer ambition and balls the developers had in original version, this entry would deserve the right to be remade into what FF12 was meant to be.

Regarding weak characters of Quina, Amarant, and Freya, I would that it doesn't really matter that much. I know a lot of people want IX to get remade, or even VI, IV, X, VIII, and XIII.
But I really think II deserves a remake the most, considering how most of what makes it hated and seen as a "bad Final Fantasy game" is because of it being rushed. Even with remasters on PS1 through the PSP, as well as the Pixel Remaster, I fully believe a remake from the ground up would best suit II.. most fittingly in the action RPG sort of way, similar to how XV was handled.
You might think "No, keep it turn-based!" but with how many people think the proficiency system just doesn't work with that, something akin to an action RPG would make more sense as the player would choose different playstyles and become familiar with that setup. Maybe have combos between weapons as you learn and improve each along the way, or weave magic that scales the more you practice with it. Let your mastery of weapons unlock skills seen from Firion in the Dissidia games that improve with practice, while the power of Ultima and other spells scale with your knowledge of magic.
I'd love to see II become a better game that fans can be proud of, rather than an already good game like IX that can only cause disappointment from high, unmet standards.

I honestly don't think they'll do either of them in the full-on FF7 Remake style, simply because that approach really does require multiple games to do the whole thing with the right amount of detail. Only FF7 has a big enough following and fan support to really justify that kind of budget and time commitment.

Oddly I would love to see all the games remade lol. Even ones like the first and 2 would be cool to see most likely with expanded characters/story for the older ones, for example, IV had large parts of the script cut due to hardware limitations. Wouldn't want to see them all hyper-realistic and detailed of course, but would love to see them all in a modern style with modern storytelling tools. Sure games like the original would have to be greatly expanded on, but making characters of the heroes of light, particularly if you give them proper arcs (something that can increase the length by giving them a little more to do, maybe with something similar to Ovtopath traveler when you can experience the story of the characters you choose for your 4. Imagine the replay value if every party composition changed the details of the side stories of the characters' development.

Wow! I agree with so many of the conclusions and observations that you made in this video, including ones I hadn't thought of before!
FFVIII was literally the first roleplaying game I _ever_ played: I hadn't even played tabletop games like D&D at that time, so you can imagine how impactful of an experience it was when I saw that opening cutscene for the first time. Although it has many flaws, I still find messing around with the junction system insanely fun, and even though the main story doesn't resonate with me as much now that I'm an adult (although the Laguna parts now hit _much_ harder), at the time I played it, I had actually gone through a real-life experience very similar to what happened between young Squall and Ellone prior to the start of the story, so I really felt like the game was acknowledging me and my experiences at the time. That said, my _personal_ pick for the next remake would be FFVIII, but I doubt that many others in the fanbase would be at all interested in that.
I think your choice of VI was perfect. I'm actually not as big of a fan of VI as I am of VII or VIII, but I can see why it's such a highly-regarded game, and I feel like, similar to VII, VI suffered from coming at a time when the available technology was inadequate to capture the full scope of the story that the creators wanted to tell. I also was surprised by how much I agreed with your point that really, Square should be trying to strike out in a new direction rather than trying to go back to the well of their old IPs. You pointed out in another one of your videos that the Final Fantasy series was created with the desire to push the envelope, and unfortunately, I think its identity in the culture at large has evolved to become sort of the antithesis of that. It would be nice to see another title that really changes our idea of what an RPG can be again.

If we're only talking about "expanding" the existing games like what FF7R has done with FF7, I believe FF1-6 would benefit the most from getting a remake of their own. To me, I think the titles from FF8 onwards are quite sufficient enough on their own. Not that they can't be expanded upon anymore, as titles like FF8 and FF9 still leave some room for expansion. But the potential for expansion for FF1-6 is so vast that they deserve the priority at least to me. For example, while they've added some things in the FF3 DS remake, I've noticed how much more things can be done. Aria in FF3, the first FF character ever to receive a character musical theme of their own (aside from "Matoya's Cave" I guess if you count that as her personal theme), has so much potential.
I think even if titles like FF1 or FF3 are like "blank slate RPGs" with their protagonists in the original versions, they're good candidates for remakes. In fact, they might even be the best candidates because the room for improvement and expansion is the biggest among all the titles. The remakes/re-releases for FF1-3 so far have also given us a taste of extra content if they're given a similar treatment as FF7R. Again, I'm only looking at this in terms of expanding the stories, characters, lores, gameplay, etc.
Oh, I don't count SoPFFO as a remake of FF1 as have also been explained by the devs themselves.
Great video btw! You definitely deserve way more views and subs for your videos. Also, I like how you're asking for FF16 here and then they announced it a day after you uploaded this video haha

    • @ballroomscott

      @@Altercate
What bothers me the most is the lack of a deep character growth/customization system, on top of the bloated cast making the disparity between different characters power levels really unbalanced. Characters like Edgar and Sabin are so powerful that basically everyone ends up using them, whereas characters like Relm and Gau can sometimes feel just barely better than an empty party slot. Also considering that the games on either side (V and VII) have great character growth/customization systems it makes the rather bland Esper system look even worse. Especially after FFV's job system, which I feel is the best character growth/customization system in any FF game. The last third of the game, after you've gotten back Setzer and an airship, can feel unfocused and confusing, and generally pushes the main story into the background.

VI. That's the only answer. Hell, VII only got a remake because of it becoming a huge commercial success and bringing the world of jrpgs to the masses, but it is a mess of a game with some dull characters. Granted, the remake makes VII a lot better than it used to be, it's still going to be interesting when they get around to having to face the over-complicated disaster of a plot moving forward.
10-15 came out on PS2 and onward so they should not even be considered for a remake. 1, 2 and 3... nah. The story is just too weak.
VIII is as controversial to many as Final Fantasy II or XIII. That's not a safe title. That leaves IV, V, VI and IX. V is the lesser known and appreciated so it gets looked over.
I can honestly see Square trying to shove another FF4 at us though because they're obsessed with it. Final Fantasy IV a great game too, and it deserves a massive round of applause for what it did on pushing the genre, but the story has a slew of issues itself. They'd have to make some fakeout deaths no longer fake for starters.
I cannot see any other game in the entire series coming close to being more deserving than FFVI. Square will go with IV though. If any.

I was in my Junior yrs in school during the time when FF6/FF7 came out. Before that, I didn't know anything about JRPG's or RPG's. After FF6/FF7 was released, that's when RPG's became a genre of the gaming industry.

8 should get an actual remake.
    6, 9 then 4.
Whatever love 7 gets, 8 should get as well. They're too connected legacy wise to do a remake for one and not the other.
That's like doing something for Ryu but doing nothing for Ken.
Or doing something for Mario but nothing for Luigi.

FF8 has great music and style, features....If FF7 is Ryu. FF8.. it's more like a Dhalsim. Just bc many people bought it off FF7 hype and it was their second played RPG, doesn't make it iconic, to me. It's not great overall. But that's why it should be remade, imo. I heard we missed out on a chunk of Laguna's story due to time restraints or something.

I think VI and IX would be amazing. That it would be too difficult is no excuse. Imagine having to rewrite the mess of FF VIII story to actually make sense.

Final fantasy 1. It’s fertile ground. Final fantasy 7 was just a cash grab because it’s the highest selling Final Fantasy game and square has been chasing that western market and nostalgia.

    • @jeremymullens7167
      @jeremymullens7167 2 роки тому +1

Imagine a reimagined final fantasy 1 the same way breath of the wild harkened back to the first legend of Zelda.
Similar to old legend of Zelda. Final Fantasy 1 didn’t hold your hand and had a more open narrative structure that let you choose which order to complete some of the dungeons with a much greater emphasis on exploration than say Final Fantasy XIII.
And honestly what I want isn’t a greater emphasis on action oriented combat. I want a complex detailed world. I was honestly blown away by the likes of chrono trigger when I played them on emulaters. Modern Jrpg’s weren’t reaching that level of polish.
Star Ocean had a cool mechanic where there were branching narrative paths and characters depending on how you built you characters and which party members you already recruited.
I haven’t played every rpg so maybe I’m missing something. The thing that pulled me away from JRPG’s towards western wasn’t turn based vs action oriented game play. It was narrative structure. Western rpg’s had a greater emphasis on player choice. At it’s simplist it was are you good or evil with narrative support.
JRPG’s went deeper into making their game a movie and limiting the choices you make. The Bethesda or BioWare choice mechanic can fit into a turn based rpg. The JPG being hooked on a single protagonist is a noose.
Give me a Final Fantasy 1 in the style of Bethesda with a highly detailed storied world and a character creator and let me choose the outcomes of the areas I visit.

    • @Altercate
      @Altercate  2 роки тому

I'd definitely be interested in a reimagining of Final Fantasy 1 that stays true to the spirit of the original game. I've taken to thinking of modern JRPGs as "story games" more so than RPGs, because as much as I love them, there really isn't any roleplaying going on anymore. :) I talked about this in my FF3 retrospective, where I called the game the last true RPG in the Final Fantasy series.

  • @alanlee67

I agree with your top 2 but for different reasons. Ff7 didn't need a remake, it was perfect the way it was. Ff9 is the second best game ever made and aside from long load times, mostly holds up. Ff6 and ff8 were most held back by technological limitations. The 8 channel sound chip of the snes really held back nobuo uematsu whereas the 24 channel psx chip really let him make real music not "game music". A modern remake would really let his brilliant soundtrack shine.
Ff8 was heavily held back by psx limitations. They tried to imitate resident evil 2 right down to mapping cancel to triangle and menu to circle. They could only render 6 characters at once and additional characters had to be prerendered. Check Cid in the briefing scene in the intro...it's hilarious. The world felt empty and barren whereas in ff7, they had a whole parade of Shinra soldiers. Ff8 was also rushed and had gaping plot issues like it was cut and cobbled together or needed to be told in multiple parts. The level scaling system was also janky resulting in the optimal way to play to just turn on no encounters. When you did fight, you only fought one or two enemies at a time...psx limitations with high poly models. Also, enemies were just damage sponges because of level scaling and junctioning death to status attack or using degenerator were the only solutions. However, the draw and magic system wasn't that bad. Drawing is an inefficient way to obtain spells compared to refining. Only noobs sat there drawing anything that wasn't meteor or full life. Also, any useful function of magic was available through blue magic or summoning so casting spells wasn't a very optimal way to play. Ff8 battle system was one of the best in series had it not been for the horrible level scaling...but that can be fixed in the remake.

Thanks for sharing! You raise some really interesting points about FF8 that I've never really considered. I would love to see them take another stab at the game with a remake! 😀 Btw, you mentioned that FF9 is the second best game ever made - what's your #1?

    • @alanlee67

@@Altercate final fantasy 7 is the best game ever made imo. It blends the best of the old school with the new school. I love studying character Stat tables and damage calculation formulas. At the same time, the graphics pushed beyond the obvious tile based graphics of the snes. I feel like ff7 is presented in a modern enough way to still enjoy playing today but it has not let go of its more complex d&d roots.

    ME: WHAT????
    "FFVIII is my favorite"
ME; That explains it all. I'm sorry, but if VIII, XII or XV are your favorite you ppl like other things but not FF. FFIX is according with the CREATOR, Sakaguchi, the Depiction of what a Final Fantasy should be, and it is the closest to a perfect FF Game as he imagined. So if the creator says IX is what he wanted for the franchise and you dont like it, you dont like Final Fantasy at all.

In my opinion, Square HAVE to put a leash in Nomura (tabata is already out so fortunately nothiing like XV will come out). What i'd like to see for a new Remake is something that respect the original and doesn't try to make another game with a FF skin like that garbage FFVIIR. That shit is not FFVII, it's an awful game with cloud and tifa with an attempt to make the storry bigger but they just messed with it and padded tha game. Hope XVI do better. Square and Final Fantasy are very important to me but since XV i've lost confidence in the company.
