  • The New Zealand Catalina Preservation Society is focused on the preservation and operation of New Zealand's only PBY-5A "Catalina" twin-engine World War Two Canso amphibious flying boat, ZK-PBY.
    The aim of the Society is to preserve, in airworthy condition, a WWII-veteran Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina flying boat, similar to the aircraft operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force between 1943 to 1953, as an Aviation Heritage project for the community benefit of New Zealand.
    Fifty-six Catalina's (NZ4001-NZ4056) were operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force between 1943 and 1953. Provided under lend/lease arrangements these were a mix of non-amphibious Consolidated and Boeing built aircraft. They were engaged in anti-submarine, shipping escort, air-sea rescue and transport roles.
    The Catalina's operated with No's 5 and 6 SQNs and No3 OTU, based at Hobsonville (Auckland, New Zealand) and various points in the Pacific. Unlike many other lend-lease aircraft, the Catalina's continued to be operated after World War II because they filled a vital role in South Pacific communications.
    This aircraft is a Canadian Vickers built Canso (c/n CV-357) which arrived in NZ on October 26th, 1994. This aircraft was originally delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force in March 1944, and operated on anti-submarine duties until it was struck off charge in June 1947.
    The aircraft is shown here during a display at Ardmore Aerodrome, Auckland, New Zealand.

    When I was a younger lad back in '78, I worked at a fly-in fishing camp in the Northwest Territories of Canada. I flew a commercial flight from Winnipeg to Lynn Lake in northern Manitoba. The next morning we headed to the harbour and boarded something we thought was out of a horror novel. Turned out to be an amphibious PBY. Man, what a flight! I spent most of it in one of the two recon. bubbles on either side of the fuselage. We nicknamed it the "Pig boat" because it was ... well, damned ugly! One day, it escaped moorings at the fishing camp in high winds and about 6 of us in 20 foot Starcraft boats managed to actually lasso it and get it turned around and headed back to the dock for re-mooring. Those were the days! What a trip. Thanks for the video!

Then turn around and hopefully make it back home.

    I had the Opportunity as a Child to actually Fly in a PBY ( Alaska used them as shuttles from main Airports) Dad met us at the Dock and talked to the Pilots and they let him give us a tour... they regretted it because he pointed out some Maintenance issues, all was good in the end.

    I have loved this ugly-duckling aircraft since moving to Casa Grande, AZ at the age of 7 in 1957. There was a long line of them, forlorn and unloved, parked at the airport. The story I heard was someone had bought them cheap as surplus, refurbished one of them as a luxury executive transport, got investors to put up the money to refurbish the rest, then skipped town down and disappeared into the Amazon basin with the money and the one good plane. If anyone knows more of this story or what happened to the rest of these PBY's please reply.

    This Catalina visited Kerikeri in the mid-90s and offered flights to the public for $50 as a fund raiser. I was lucky but many missed out before the aircraft had to leave the Bay of Islands. It carried a surprising number of passengers and the duration was, for memory, about half an hour. Well worth it for many reasons, but importantly, to be able to say, 'I've had a ride in a Catalina!' Sadly, some time after that, another Catalina was on its delivery flight to NZ, developed problems and was lost at sea.

    • @historicalmachines
      @historicalmachines  5 років тому

      Not quite correct. The Catalina that was lost en-route to New Zealand was the forerunner of this aircraft. When that Cat was lost there was no Catalina in New Zealand, and this one, which would be the one that was offering flights in the Bay of Islands in the '90's, was the 'replacement' for the one that was lost.

    Hate it when they remove the bow chaser turret. With them they look like rattlesnakes about to strike. Also the .30 BMGs are a great help in breaking surface tension on a glassy sea, according to a former crewman I knew in the ‘60s.

      The aircraft the RNZAF used during WW2 were NOT amphibians, rather they were flying boats only. That is they could take off and land on water, but could NOT take off and land on the land (as this amphibious version of the aircraft can).

      Only reason it does not land on salt water is because of the potential for corrosion -- this aircraft regularly lands on fresh water lakes.
