There’s not much banks can do. They don’t interact directly with the end buyers. It’s up to the stores to train staff to spot and prevent fraud. However, most retail stores don’t invest in their staff because the higher ups would rather have that money for themselves than invest that money in the staff. So most staff don’t know how to handle scammers. Those who do don’t bother with them because they don’t get rewarded for going above and beyond. This will be an eternal problem in retail industry.
It is too late by the time you got your statement. I set up alerts for my credit cards’ transactions and I will get either a text or email notification. It is crucial to report a suspicious transaction and block the card immediately. One tactic is try automated mass online buying of small amount using all combinations of credit card numbers. Any successful transaction will be used for larger purchases until they bust your credit limit. Another way is to steal customers’ credit card numbers and then make purchases at 2am to catch you sleeping and unable to respond to your bank’s query.

Good that Singapore's media doesn't have any qualms about showing the faces of those arrested. None of that "Innocent until proven otherwise" hypocrisy where criminals seem to have more rights than victims. This alone isn't enough but it does help to discourage some from committing crimes. Went thru the exact same issue a just over a week ago. Multiple transactions that weren't mine were being made and had DBS cancel my cards and replace them ASAP. Luckily the fraud disputes didn't take longer than 3 days to get back the lost money. I didn't even report my case to the police and now I see this. Not an isolated incident then. Scum of the earth these people.
That's nice of DBS. I had the same with UOB and the CSO insisted that it was card presented sales, either through ewallet or physical card and refused to refund me. Told me to make police report and it has been more than a year, no reply back from the bank or police at all. Luckily it was a very small amt so I paid it off and cancelled the card.

it usually started with the people inside the bank itself…then our online subs with our credit cards, even prepaid cards/mobile wallet… my BigPay was heavily used by ppl from the US n Europe but transaction always failed as i frozed the card, but i could still see the transaction in my statement… i never use BigPay anymore..
In the good old days you need to sign to make payments and the shop should verify the signature if it matches that of the card. But these days no one ask you to sign anymore, even if they do they hardly check the signature.
I’ve owned a credit card for at least 20 years and merchants very rarely check my signature, even back in the initial days of owning the card. I think the signature checking was only useful when the transaction was done offline (manually processed) back in the 1980s and 1990s using the device that slides across your card to get a carbon copy of your card details (reason why the numbers and letters are embossed). Once the transaction verification goes online, it’s seldom done and it’s ignored when they introduced chip card. Now they don’t even care when there’s PIN code requirement for large value purchases. I’ve not signed on the back of my card for at least 10 years and I’m sure there are many others like me. My latest card from UOB doesn’t even have a signature strip anymore.

You use cash, u also will get scam. Regardless of what we bring (cc, e-wallet or cash), there is always ways to scam your things. Moreover, you bring cash, u drop your cash, that's it. You drop your cc, u stil have some chance to contact your bank to cancel it., before it is being used. From convenient and security perspective, everything has pro and cons.
This is no new trend. I faced this in India as well. My card was hacked online and attempts to make online purchases, probably requesting a refund to their wallets to make purchases or redeem the money to their accounts. It's very sophisticated & dangerous. For some amongst us, it's a very heavy burden.
There is one uncle who also thinks this way so always carries cash with him until one fine day he accidentally drops the cash while walking. When he realised it was too late.

It's not that people is unaware of the laws here, but it is the lack of enforcement that people are betting on. Look around everyday, you never miss a multiple law being broken, and nothing happened.

Always check your card transactions in your bank app at least once a week. Raise any issue with the bank as soon as you find any unauthorised transactions.
Even daily will not help. Friend got his Trust card details used overseas in the middle of the night. Reported it in the morning and got scolded. Too late lah , your problem now …..
@hugohabicht9957 I found an unauthorised charge on my card last year. I reported it to the bank. After some verification, they told me they will cancel my card and send me a new card after 48 hours. In the meantime I would have to pay the unauthorised amount first. Then they would refund the amount in 90 days after my payment. I received the refund in 60 days.

I handled a lot of credit card. I've always checked the name of the credit card with their ID or passport. If unmatched, I'll decline.
