As a owner of one of these machines I can agree with with most of your points one minor issue I had is the stereo needs to be louder but absolutely worth the $170k for the machine u get is gonna be hard to beat.

it has Tunes ?? DP didn’t mention a radio. I couldn’t stand to work in a machine all day without a radio. in the country it might not receive very many channels but then I would try to figure out how to wire in SiriusXM. I put SirusXM in my semi.

@@steamindemon3389 We have radios in all our equipment but I never use them. I have a Spotify subscription which lets me down load music and podcasts. I download my podcasts and then I have a pair of Isotunes bluetooth ear muffs and I play my podcasts through them. So much better than listening to a crappy am/fm radio that probably won't work right half the time anyway. Plus you don't have to listen to the same 5 songs over and over.

Definitely a big thanks to Case for the opportunity. Channels like this are about the best review they could ask for. Like you said DP, a 10 min demo at a trade show just does not do this machine justice. It's so versatile you really do need to see it in action for a few weeks to see what it's capable of.

Agree with DPs assessment and that it doesn't quite fit their needs. They rarely use the Takeuchi, after all. The price of around 200K is what I have also seen, which is not terrible at all for what you get. But you can also get a good used dozer and a great Takeuchi CTL for that price. And at least I remembered this was a factory prototype DL550 and there was never any chance DP would get to own it. Case was always going to want it back. And now that have a field-proven example to tear down and examine and learn from. Hugely valuable to their engineers. This machine did real, hard work, repeatedly. No babying. Case is to commended for letting this machine prove itself on camera in front of everyone. CNH has been kicked around a lot lately but they clearly have good things going on.

I could see this machine being a perfect match for a landscape architect. Rip up existing planting/trees, push a bunch of dirt, compact it then move heavy pallets of pavers with ease. What about a pool installation business? The power it has along with the versatility with attachments and being able to load high sided dump trucks

I've always liked Case machines; in nearly 52 years of operating (50 of that in my own business), you can imagine, like Jerry, I've kinda been there, done that with nearly everything commonly out there. It's a fantastic idea, and appears to be a very versatile machine. That said, I looked up the numbers on it not long after you got it on demo and, frankly, was surprised at the price. As nice as it is, and like everyone else, I like shiny new toys, For less than $200k, I can buy a good skid steer, and small dozer used, and still not spend that much and, frankly, they wouldn't have all of that pollution crap on them that nearly everyone has issues with. I really appreciate the opportunities you get to shake out new machines, and really enjoyed watching everything you did with this. Thanks.

Does make you wonder if you could find an older track loader in the 450-550 size, and retrofit it for a skid steer quick attach at least for the ability to swap forks and grapples in addition to the bucket.
The guy that I helped redo my grandparents terraces actually used a wheel loader to do most of the pushing while I was using their 8u D6 tractor.

As an owner, I love mine with some caveats as you have. Tracks are the same as d3c. I broke the tracks off and part numbers matched with Cat. Triple grouser steel definitely good all around, even on some asphalt. Fan is extremely loud, but it runs my mulcher with no heat issues whatsoever. As a big guy, the cab is quite roomy. My seatbelt has been hooked behind me since the day I bought it.

I 100% agree with you on the swinging door, I like the Case CTLs other than the door, the roll up doors are my choice too. Another application I think the DL550 would work great for is wild land firefighting, with the dozer blade and build a fire plow that attaches to the ripper I think it would be great. Plus you wouldn't need a lowboy trailer to move it from fire to fire. We use 350 and 450 John Deere dozers now and they work good, but this would be easier to get around through the timber and brush since it's smaller.

Definitely a good machine for the right applications, can really see it benefiting someone who currently has a scidsteer but has to hire in the occasional dozer or dozer with operator. I cannot remember the job but I do remember you saying having the versatility and quick change without trucking two machines for a short one day job was fantastic. You don't do a lot of one day, or two day jobs on video but that compact package for transport for those seems to be a big plus. Just not your companies need. Your dump truck, trailer, and that machine could do a lot of small jobs in a hurry. Add a set of forks and just think of all the jobs it could do.

A little surprised you didn't mention (unless I missed it) how well it did with heavy loads, especially the concrete blocks and clay tiles. It blew away the Taco and Kubota....didn't even seem close. That said, overall I think you made the right call about sending it down the road. For the work you do it's overkill as a CTL and more than adequate as a dozer, BUT..... there's no way to have it at (2) jobsites at the same time when one requires the CTL and the other requires a small dozer, which you seem to often have the need for. Very cool machine, though.

The door/window is an excellent point and defintely a strong arguement for getting a rollup door machine or getting an open cab machine. A hydraulic release will only work if your implement is tiled in a way where it wont block the door and with how some arms sit you basically need it on the ground to open a door. With DEF issues still being a recurring issues in a machine I can very easily see someone using a machine trying to say clear a fire break, going into limp mode, not being able to drop arms low enough and having to try and escape through the rear window if they're able to.

  • @bobbrinkerhoff3592

Here's something to think about on the door issue ; most of the companies that make CTL machines with swing out doors also make mini excavators with swing up front windows . It's not like they don't have the knowledge to put a swing up door on their CTLs .

It's really the attachment assortment that you'd have to work with which would set that machine apart from the pack. If you think about it, a vibrating roller, grapple bucket, and a extendable boom stick crane attachment along with the standard bucket, ruckus rake and blade would be the cat's meow. (not to mention a trencher attachment) Personally, I'd love to own it.

You commented that the visibility out the back wasn't great. I haven't run all the different brands, but I've run Bobcat, CAT and own a Case SV250. And for a vertical lift machine, by far I think my Case is better. The way the arms curve down in back gives very good visibility with the arms down low vs the Bobcat or CAT machines that both have the linkage that sticks straight up and is ALWAYS in your line of sight. I'll take Case's arm design over them any day. Now I've never run a Kubota or Takeuchi to compare to, but the arm design of the Kubota looks just like the CAT/Bobcat design (sticks up in the way). Also, as you pointed out, no dirt funnel. 😊

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. No surprise as to your decision. The cost is a little expensive if you don’t have the need for a dual purpose machine. If the price was a bunch lower it would likely be a very popular machine but they would likely be giving too much away. One can only hope that they take your suggestions and do well enough from your demonstration to the public that they might misplace a unit with your specs and improvements in Derby and forget where it went. That or make you an offer you can’t refuse. 😂 Wishing you and your family the best.

Mike, from what I have seen on your channel you may want to spec a 550 the way you want it to replace the old Taco. The Taco really don't like moving blocks all that well, or 36" clay pipe for that matter. This particular machine has done well, as you say. However set up slightly differently it should work a treat. Case may even make the changes you mention in the next one they build.

He maneuvered to the top and did some moving that wasn't videoed: I wondered how he was going to get down and he turned around up on that last step. Of course, I really didn't see it fitting in with Mikes work jobs.
Thank you, Case, for allowing DP and Aaron do some magic with your 550 Minotaur.👍

I have enjoyed all of the videos with the Minotaur and see how it could fit in a lot of needs and possibly replace 2 machines. However, like any “multi tool” it’s handy but isn’t the best at any one job. Sure is a nice machine though!

I can understand this machine not fully suited for your operation. The investment has to be made and you have to count the hours it runs to make it profitable.
For the versatility alone I think it suits your operation pretty well, but you leave the D4 in a field for a week not caring, this is something else.
For companies here in the Netherlands I definitly see possibilities, mainly because it is also compact, you can haul it on one trailer with several attachements and have several machines in one.
Thanks for the heads up review😀

I think it's a great choice for a one man or small operation. I can see Case expanding the attachment options for it. I'm retired but if that machine had been available 20 years ago it would probably have followed me home.

I been runing equipment for just over 55 year's now from old school hand crank dozer to all the new with that runs by PC with do not work well In the jungle .
So I see the DL 550 as a new dozer so time will tell the truth about it .
Looks nice and having ac is wonderful down in the jungle . But for now it's just some new toy they came out with now.
    God bless y'all

Was really hoping this machine would wind up with a decal. I have a fair number of hours on a dozer and, yes, it would take me a while longer than I had to get use to the dozer. The front door is a very definite downside. Case: please take care of that. Now, as a 70 something with serious physical limitations, the only real problem that I have is getting into it. It needs some serious step points, which it doesn't have. Once inside, no problem, even though I'm a big guy. Overall, if I could buy it, I would. This machine, fitted with a grapple rake or log forks would be a serious contender for the small scale logger and portable mill operator. Case is looking at adding a winch, which was one of my initial questions. The addition of a winch and log grapple attachment for the ripper would be a winner, in my book.

Thanks for answering some questions I had on the 550. You should see if case could send out a small dozer compared to your cat D4 to see how it does in real life work. I was interested in the 550 because I want a dozer and a bigger skid steer but you made my decision on that it won’t work with my type of work. I like the new smal John Deere because they don’t have def fluid

heavy landscape might be its gig, my friend has one they found it does a great job for a lot of farm work. They can move it easily and it fits in tight places

Just spent 10 hours in my machine with a 72" mulcher with peak temp yester of 95, and only stopped to fuel and grease once. Never got close to overheating for engine or hydraulics.
