  • BarDown's resident Leafs fan Corwin is joined by Luca to discuss Brendan Shanahan's press conference and the organization's decision to not bring back Kyle Dubas as their general manager. What does that mean for the team's future and what does it mean for their core four of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares?

What Dubas did, assuming Shanahan's chronology is accurate, is basically overplay your hand. He said in his presser his family had been through a lot (online harrassment of his grandmother, wife etc.) by despicable trolls who didn't like Dubas, so I have sympathy there, as did Shanahan. However, pondering out loud about whether you're unsure about the job, is not the way most people would have handled that, especially considering he hadn't allegedly given Shanahan a heads up he would say so in public. His foot dragging after Shanahan & his agent had arrived at a deal in principle, then proposing a counter-offer, obviously pissed off Shanahan to the point where he decided enough, time to move in a different direction. The whole affair in my view, was bungled by all the parties involved, ending up with Dubas, whom I've often defended, shooting himself in the foot, just like his team did vs Florida. What message does this send to Matthews, your star forward who MLSE said they definitely want to extend?

While I see your point, Dubas had that same conversation with Brendan Shanahan that he did in his presser, and he wasn’t offered any actual solutions. According to Shanahan, when talking to Kyle he essentially said “yeah this job is hard on everyone and their families. But it’s the job you chose.” But didn’t provide any actual tangible ways that he or the Maple Leafs organization would take steps to help him or his family in terms of mental or physical well-being. I think burnout is real. And being told by your boss to basically suck it up was probably not well received. We only have one side. But I think this was a really emotional decision from Shanahan and I don’t think it was the right one

Good riddance. Kyle couldn’t build a playoff team to save his soul. He had to have been an illiterate to think four finesse forwards, coupled with average defence and average goaltending were the template for success. History shows us otherwise.

If this was the NFL, they'd be the Cleveland Browns.
But they spend Yankees / Cowboys levels of money on their top guys and with zero to show for it.
      5 of 16 wins isn't excusable.
Like, we can talk about this all we want, but look at Vegas. 95% of their players wouldn't make the Leafs top line. But they've made 4 Conference Finals in 6 years of existing.
The Leafs aren't a basketball team where those top players play 80% of a game. But they sure are hell pay those players like they do 🤷

Smart money is on George McPhee, older but respected GM who built the Capitals and stepped aside in Vegas to keep McCrimmon in the org. Also being on the older side, gives you the ability to put his successor in place and patiently wait for his turn.
