  • Audi Sorlie is back and joining John Linneman once again for the second of two Nintendo Game Boy specials. Each of them picks their top three titles for the classic Nintendo handheld, with the other actually playing them! In this instalment, Audi's picks take John into uncharted waters at a stormy 30FPS or lower with Astérix, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Back from the Sewers and Balloon Kid.

I like how Audi keeps John real by making him play 20fps games that he's never heard of. Keep it up.

Thanks for the mentions, guys! ❤
Some things to comment - In this game you can hold the attack button (just like in Mario games) to run, and then the jumps for long distances / platforms are much easier.
The sound is kind of broken in one of the channels in the video (bad emulation?).
The parallax scroll was actually one of my ideas and the reason why the game runs at 30fps and not 60pfs. Some graphic pieces where reserved for the background. They where calculated and drawn in RAM, then transferred to the VRAM at each frame to create the illusion. I thought no game did this on the Game Boy at the time, but I've seen the effect used in later games such as Prehistorik Man or R-Type DX for the GBC.
    Hugs!

John is spot on recognizing the TMNT game as 20 fps at 12:50 and Balloon kid as 15 fps at 24:10. Fells like Audi was trolling xD The DF crew should really do a "guess the framerate" competition.

Fun fact. Every level in Balloon Kid can be beaten without using balloons. You can stand on the enemies, jump really high, and... don't touch the power balloon as it won't help you if you're trying to beat the level without balloons.

We like low frame rates in PAL Land it's why we set our TVs to 50hz.
The human eye can't see 60fps anyway, so we prefer to stick to about 7fps. GoldenEye multiplayer just seemed normal to us, and to the developers who were PALs themselves.

"The Human eye can't see 60 fps"
This is a myth, and it can be observed if you compare running multiple objects at different frame rates. Really I'm not sure how you don't observe it just by looking at a screen cause its VERY obvious (I can even tell when animations in a 60 fps game are slower than 60 fps) but maybe everyones eyes different. For me around 90 hz tho you do stop seeing it, but you can still feel it in terms of delay

Glad to see Astérix getting the love the series deserves. I'm German, as you guys mentioned, here we loved Astérix and Lucky Luke. When I was in my teens I realized that Astérix was French and Lucky Luke French / Belgian but I didn't understand that those comics, films and games were almost unknown in America. Especially when it came to Lucky Luke as I grew up thinking that was as American as it gets regarding Wild West stories for younger audiences.
Big shoutout to the Lucky Luke game for the Gameboy / Gameboy Colour. By far my favourite soundtrack of any Gameboy game.
I played the game recently after not having seen it in 15-20 years and once I heard the first few notes, the entire thing immediately, very memorable and catchy.

The scrolling looks like a combination of line scrolling, but then also updating a set of tile data each frame for the overlapping elements. The game would have to shift the tile graphics for bg tiles by updating them each frame which I would guess is why it’s a bit less than 60 fps.

It’s possible that they used the window layer to allow multi scrolling backgrounds on the gameboy but it is also possible that they used prerendered tile updates to create such ellusion of multi scrolling backgrounds on the gameboy, but i think it’s very unlikely that they used tile updates because that would,ve took an enormous amount of memory space on the cartride,
It is also the reason why the nes version of it does lack multi scrolling backgrounda because of the same reason, but the nes also does lack a window layer, but still, it would be cool to see a homebrew enhanced nes version of asterix using tile updates to achieve that same multi scrolling background effect as on the gameboy.

i probably played through asterix more than 50 times back in the day or even 100. I would challenge myself by keeping high score how many lives i had gathered. If i knew about speedrunning back then i would probably try to speedrun it lol

What's the best Asterix game? I was so bummed when that recent beat'em'up absolutely nailed the look, but apparently completely dropped the ball on the gameplay side. I wouldn't mind some good Asterix though. I remember playing some 16-bit game back in the day, I think on PC? Not sure if it's good.

I love Asterix back in day. When I was a kid I used to watch the cartoon on CN. My favotire game is Asterix and the Great Rescue for Master System. The Master System version improves most of the fundemental problems the Mega Drive version had like remove the awful time limit and you can change between Asterix and Obelix on fly without deciding what you want to pick before enter the zone, with is IMO make the Mega Drive version so terrible.
Please do a Master System Retro Play next. I can recommend my huge list of Master System games.
