The PC ENGINE has a 16-Bit GPU! Only the CPU is 8-Bit! It's like the Dreamcast, where many say it is a 128-Bit-System, but the CPU is "just" 64-Bit, like in the N64! Only the GPU in the Dreamcast is 128-Bit!
The pc-engine actually has dual 16-bit graphic processors. And the cpu though 8 bit was twice as fast as the snes and almost as fast as the genesis. With dedicated instructions and a 21 bit data bus it was as powerful as the snes and genesis. It was definitely part of the 16 bit Era and definitely not 8 bit.
@@naofumiosato3911 I agree except only thing strange about the genesis version is that the stages are in a different order and the engine has no sound.
@@naofumiosato3911 - In a lot of respects, yes but in some respects, no. The Mega Drive version has a higher resolution, and is faster with more going on. The Testarossa is wider and more accurate. Furthermore, the Megadrive version scales sprites markedly better, there's more car variety, it handles the fork in routes more effectively and has superior collision detection. Soundtrack is also a LOT BETTER. This is all largely down to the Megadrive being simply more powerful. However, despite the limitations of the PC Engine hardware, it's artistically more pleasing and closer to the arcade particularly with regards to colours of each stage. The Testarossa is also much closer to the Rosso Corsa Ferrari colour and Toni is right to suggest that the colours are odd in the Megadrive version. They're simply too dark. Moreover, the Megadrive version has the Japan order concerning stages whereas the PC Engine version has the stages ordered the same as the international version and the one I remember from my childhood. I prefer the international order tbh. it's fairly close for me. They're definitely the 2 best home conversions by a considerable distance prior to the Saturn and XBox (enter a code on Outrun II) versions though. An honourable mention however must also go to the Master System port which was immense considering the hardware limitations.
It's kinda strange the SNES never got a port of this game, given it was on almost every other system of the time including a bunch of 8-bit platforms. I'm thinking it could have done a pretty great port of this title.
@@jasonlee7816 The CPU definitely wasn't the reason. Even the likes of C64, ZX Spectrum, MSX and Master System got ports. And games like Top Gear 2, Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing, and F-Zero [which runs at 60fps in SlowRom at only 2.68 MHz] show the SNES was more than up to the task of creating great fast-paced racing games. Maybe they just thought the game was too old at that point to put on SNES or something. But I still think it would have been cool to see it there.
@@inceptionalyes it seems Nintendo didn’t want to pay Ferrari + Sega a license fee or they thought it was too old putting 1986 Out Run arcade game on a 1990, 1991, 1992 SNES console
@@jasonlee7816 Yeah, possibly that could be the reason. Edit: Also, a little observation: It seems that Out Run on PC Engine is running everything on-screen staggered at 20fps other than the road lines that update at around 30fps on average, whereas Nigel Mansell on SNES is updating everything on-screen at once at a solid 30fps. So, it's a good example of SNES there running a more complex racing game at a smoother frame rate, which again just shows that the CPU is more than capable of doing games like this full justice. Just something I noticed there on some further study.
Good port considering when it came out. PC Engine had some good arcade ports that beat Snes and Genesis but this port Genesis wins its very close battle.
very cool " is this on C64 ? sure looks like it , i remember playing a game similar to this one, or it was the exact same game if i'm not mistaken, as a little kid at my girl cousin's C64 way back in the late '80s. the car here looks to be a Ferrari Testarossa, albeit a convertible, which in reality never existed actually, there never was a Testarossa convertible, also what's funny is how the car doesn't lose speed in corners when drifting. ahh good times man ! long live the 80s & 90s !!! :)
I love this version! What I would have given to have owned a PC Engine back in the day. Instead I was stuck with the terrible Amiga version! :-(
Amiga Out Run is (was) an
inferior (lazy) Atari ST port

One of the better ports, i remember wanting this and Double dragon.

What I love most is how the horse on the back turns left or right depending on your own direction... :D :D
It was like that in the arcade too.
Yes, you can get a version of OutRun on the C64, and pretty much every other console and computer ever made. It was quite popular!
Best 8-bit version of Outrun ever (apart from the slightly whiney engine sound).
