The more of Grainger's music that I hear the more I believe him to be a truly great composer. Chopin takes a Polish dance and folk melody and writes a Mazurka - everyone says "genius". Grainger takes an English dance and folk melody and writes a piano piece - everyone says 'second rate' or Salon music! Such snobbery! The way the harmonies build from the simplicity of the start through to the finish in this piece is breathtaking - and beautiful.

It's not just Grainger that gets it.
Holst and Vaughan Williams come in for the same ridiculous criticism.
I agree about this piece. It is first class.
The other really great aspect of Graingers music is it's versitility.
This piece is orchestral, but so much is brilliant on Military Brass and woodwind, much like Holst.
The Euphonium players can get to play!
Leave the detractors to their hour long Mahler and Bruckner. They're welcome to that.
Percy was good enough for Stokowski!

Yes, so far removed from the vulgar rubbish masquerading as music that we have to endure today. Charming and original, and the piano arrangement of this is Difficult.

Fine piece, though some of those harmonies are from Planet Neptune.
