My A Level Experience // failing + retaking

- Hi, I’m Anna, a psychology student at university. I have previously talked about having to retake a year at sixth form, but I’ve never explained it fully. So in this video I talk about the experience of having to retake a year. Maybe this will be useful to someone who’s going through something similar.
I’ve been hesitant to post this, but I really hope someone benefits from it.
Reminder: it may seem like the worst thing in the world, but it’s not. focus on passing and you’ll get there before you even know it. don’t be so hard on yourself💛

thank you for talking about this honestly. i’ve only ever seen and heard of people who got D worse case scenario, and that too in a fourth subject. i’ve just given my AS exams and am fully expecting a U because i didn’t practice or revise well. i’m planning to resist them, and actually people seriously underestimate how hard a levels are, like they are equivalent to high school AP classes. it it wasn’t for the internet i would have probably continued my belief that anyone who gets lower than a D in A levels is banished to some dungeon where they struggle to make ends meet for the rest of their lives just bc they didn’t take school seriously at 17! but honestly? just had to accept that realistically worst case scenario (at least for me since i’m going to the US) is community college, where i can study hard and transfer to a better one. like life is actually full of second chances and it’s not all black and white?
I failed my a levels but I just abandoned them all together, I feel comforted hearing your experience 💖

My results came in today and it broke my heart as well
Sociology is one of my strongest subjects and to see a D to it, under my name crushed me. On the other subjects, I got Cs. All my other mates got As and Bs and it made me feel so embarrassed and small

I know how you feel. I got BCD and I'm debating whether to redo them. I still got into a top 30 uni though but I'm not happy with BCD and I know I can do better.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. Sending you lots of love, you’ve sat your exams and studied during a difficult time in difficult circumstances. You’re trying and doing your best. Retaking isn’t the end of the world, even thought it may feel like it. In the long run, grades don’t define you and like you said sociology IS one of your strong subjects, a grade doesn’t change that.

I'm retaking year 12 now, I skipped my finals cause I got scared, now i regret . All my friends moved out , I changed my major and now I'm getting really good grades at maths/ physics with minimal effort however I feel miserable honestly. I can't wait for this year to be over. Too much pressure from my parents as well to get perfect scores cause I chose to retake the year it sucks . I got through the first 5 months now 5 months to go

do most schools allow people to just retake year 12 if they're not confident they'll achieve the predicted grades they want for uni ?
I think if someone wants to retake year 12 because they didn’t get good grades (let’s say they got D and they wanted a B) then it might depend on the school? but throughout year 13 someone really can improve and that grade can become an A* at the end! whereas if someone got a U then they kind of have no choice (IF they took 3 AS like I did because I dropped one subject, I then had no choice, or if it’s the subject they want to continue I’m year 13) I hope this makes sense!
I feel so useless that I have to retake while my friend had graduate from diploma. I fucking hate myself. Thank god I’m not the only one
please don't say that. don't think low of yourself because these are letters that don't define you. i hope you achieve what you want to achieve and that this time it is easier

What if we take A levels for the 3rd time?
Will that be included in our certificate?
Hi, I don’t remember exactly 1000% but my certificate just says my grades and year of when the exams were sat (I think, at least I’m 80% sure) so no I don’t think so? I do remember being worried about that, but I don’t think that’s a problem. [I got my certificate 3 years ago so i don’t know if anything has changed in that time] 😁

idk what to do, I’ve almost finished my first year of college, but I feel like all the a levels I’ve chosen are wrong and are not for me

Hello, yes retaking is tough. But you need to think about what is right for you, if you feel like the a levels aren’t going to help you , it’s not what you enjoy it’s not what you want to do then it might be worth considering changing them or talking with your teachers and seeing what they suggest. It is a tough choice, but do what’s best for you!
did you pay to retake it? did you resit all your exams for free?

I’m in a similar boat. I dropped out at 15 due to mental health and took GCSES online privately. I failed for 2 years. I’m 18 and now starting college but the thought of everyone being 16 is destroying me. I’m not going to make friends with them, they’re so immature and giddy. I do not know what to do :(
Hi, well done for going back and trying again :) you can always make friends with the years above? It’s a bit of a difficult situation, but maybe this will be ideal for you to focus on your studies and you can meet people in other ways. [by my social advice isn’t the best, I’m at uni and making friends hasn’t been the easiest!] good luck, you’ve got this 🤍
My A Level Results Day was this year and like yours, it was very traumatic and not a day I like to think about often. I spent the whole day and the next day crying seemingly all the time.
I have decided to resit my A Levels in the hopes of better grades and for me to get into the university that I want. I know this isn’t going to be an easy year for me, but I’m ready for it!

same here, i messed up one subject and now I have to retake year 13 for uni, it aint gonna be easy but its doable :)

Yes it really is. It’s a horrible experience! And it feels like the end of the world. But it will all eventually work out (sorry i don’t want to say all these cheesy happy quotes as you might be tired of hearing them) but it’s true. to be honest I still don’t know what I’m meant to be doing or if that failure was 100% a good thing. It’s definitely led me down a different path, I never thought I’d be studying abroad... anyway. Retaking something it’s as bad as it seems many years down the line, surround yourself with your family and loved ones, take some time to process what’s happened and try again. You can do this. And I believe in you 💗 (sorry this reply is so long, also typing this I realised this is like advice for myself as well as I have a retake in a week😭) ❤️
how did you go about UCAS the second time round
Hi, I failed my year 12 exam so I kind of had my whole ucas journey before me. But I just had to change my personal statement that I had written, add my new subjects, and not really write about the retaking part. From what I can remember I think that was all...
