    The creepiest part is how when Jack enters the Gold Room he takes it for granted that it's full of people in the 1920s.

      That's because he's a reincarnation. The old part of him in that photo from 1921 at the end is taking over him, that's why he doesn't think anything of it.

      frank puma I take your point. I should have extrapolated more. I never accepted the REALLY weird supposition, that we came back as raindrops, leaves on a trees and all that dippy Hippy crud. But, as other people, or, same people, but in other times and places. PLUS--unknowingly, being on a endless time loop, that maybe has that 'fork in the road' element,i.e. as depicted in the film ' Sliding Doors'. There is no scientific proof of course--not yet, but if you are aware of a British TV series from the 1980's called 'The Bloxham Tapes', where people under hypnosis regressed to a time and, most particularly, places and events, they could NOT have known about ( and proven so) it would at least, open your mind to the possibility.

      The critics didn’t like his “mugging” because it’s a sign of bad acting, but Kubrick instructed Jack to do so to push a plot point. Jack is crazy before his interaction with the hotel. The hotel uses these types of damaged personalities for its own evil desires.

    1:58 I like how Lloyd leans forward slightly aggressive at this point to force the believe on Jack that he shouldn't overthink things. It's the only little bit of emotion you see in his character during the film, almost as if the hotel had a slight bit of doubt if they could 'convert' Jack.

Jack says "been away, but now I'm back" and "it's good to be back" I feel like there's hidden meaning behind those words. It's not just that he's back at the bar since the last time, but that he's back at the party from the 20s. So many puzzles in this movie!!

      +Dylan Downs While it does seem like a stretch on a few points, it was still interesting. Something the author pointed out that I never noticed was that during the scenes where he talks to Lloyd and Grady, he is facing toward a mirror-as if implying that he's talking to his reflection and that these conversations are actually happening entirely in his head.

  • @sealforvr

    Hard to believe the entire hotel is a set. Kubrick took over most of Elstree studio's soundstages and had all the sets built at once and of commercial grade materials to last the 46 week shoot. He wanted to film in real time order, so every set had to be up and ready to use at any moment. The "Gold Room" was built inside at pre-war Zeppelin hangar, hence the vast size and high solid ceiling.

      I expect the Hanger you mention is one of two at Cardington in Bedfordshire UK. I've driven past these monster hanger's many times. One is used for Fire testing equipment, the other is used for film sets. Probably where the real James Bond gear is tested.

      @Harvester236 9 років тому +8

      Very interesting. Hangers are often used for larger-scale sets, quite often when it's the interior of homes or other buildings, but it's very rare to rebuild a set as large as the Gold Room.

    • @GordonStainforth
      @GordonStainforth 6 років тому +5

      Sorry to say that this information is completely wrong. Total fiction. The Gold Room was built in a huge shed (not a sound-proof stage) at Elstree Studios. Nothing to do with Cardington. Ever since I sobered up, I've looked at Lloyd as the personification of Jack's alcoholism. All his actions and lines are those of an addict who has given himself permission to "slip." People in recovery often characterize the disease as thing, always in wait for that lapse in judgement and serenity. And why would the ending be the only supernatural element in the whole movie? Seems off if that was the case.

    The astonishing brilliance of this film is hard to even comprehend, decades after it was originally made. The thing that strikes me most is how Kubrick defied all expectations at every point in the film. A lesser director would have done something really pedestrian, like transitioning from the shot of a full ballroom to a shot of an empty room with just the main actor in it talking to essentially himself. But the way this is composed, it actually mirrors the psychological process of losing one's grip with reality. And what's more, it is so easy to imagine that in a similar position, anyone might actually lose their grip on reality. There isn't a single person alive who, faced with this situation, wouldn't at least run the risk of losing their mind. I think the pandemic and having to stay home in isolation for so long gave us all a newfound appreciation for how damaging isolation can be. And the tiniest details that are almost imperceptible, such as the fact that he did not actually have a bar snack in his hand when he went to "eat." I'm not even a horror fan, but I'm just in awe of this film. I watch it every so often just to marvel at its brilliance as a piece of film-making. I have heard that Stephen King did not like this film, because it doesn't necessarily follow the book. But I felt it captured the essence of what made the book horrifying when I read it. The Shining is the one book that scared the hell out of me, to the point where I was actually finding myself afraid and my heart was actually pounding when reading it. I've never had that experience with another story.

      Tywin Lannister example: when we see speakeasy parties depicted in media, we see people in fancy clothes sipping cocktails, looking high class and sophisticated. Left out is the commonality of drugs, even back then. Also theses orgies where people would couple with anyone-male or female. And in fact, in the underground culture of the time, homosexuality and bisexuality where pretty much an open secret.

    SOMETHING NOBODY HAS NOT NOTICED YET: THE SPECIFIC USE OF LIGHTS. Notice the blinking lights and their significance. Everytime the lights switch on, it is a sign that something important is just being said or happening. 1) Jack comes into the ballroom, it lights up. It came into "existence" again, just like it was in the 1920s. 2) Jack wants to pay and the lights go up again because Jack is an alcoholic and just "lit up" with happiness that he is going to have a drink again. 3) Lloyd tells him "no charge" and the lights turn off, just like Jack´s mood. 4) "Orders from the house?" Jack is suspicious. Because it is "orders LITERALLY from the house, the haunted building. Lloyd does not exist, the house set him up there with the rest of the crew and guests to be an illusion that would fool Jack into doing what he is supposed to do (to his wife and kid). 5) "I´m the kinda man who likes to know who´s buying their drinks, Lloyd!" Now Jacks KNOWS there is something fishy, and the lights flash again. 6) "Anything you say, Lloyd!" Jack officially resigns, signs off, gives in to his alcoholism and his old habits, and the lights flash again to note us of it. 7) Jack dances in the illusion-filled room, giving into his hallucinations or the house´s illusions... and so on, and so on. And then he meets the waiter who used to be the caretaker. And we all know what he had done in the past and what he is about to tell Jack.

    2:16 I always loved this part where Jack does a little dance. I have no idea if this was improvised or not but its genius. The whimsical dancing to Al Bowlly's "Midnight, The Stars and You" makes the scene all the more uncanny and fever-dreamish. Even so the rest of the ball room scene to me is one of the most surreal scenes in cinema. The fact that Jack Torrance was either hallucinating this entire scene or there were actual ghosts makes this so disturbing.
