Force Of Habit was Capitol Records attempt for their *BLACK* album for Exodus. I'm not going to say this was one of my favorite Exodus albums but it wasn't bad either. Gary and Rick really honed their chops on this record solo-wise even the stripped down riffs were meaty and thick sounding, it was heavier than the Black album IMO, and lastly the songs really showed Zet's versatility as a singer where he can actually SING! I'm a huge fan of Zet's vocals from Pleasures to Force and Tempo, I'm NOT a fan of his screeching high pitched goblin vocal delivery he's been using ever since, just never have. Zetro to me in the hardcore delivery like Impact, and songs like Within the Walls...that's Zetro to me. He's a killer front man and the heir to Baloff's throne when he passed, Dukes filled in admirably but Zetro IS Exodus as well.
Force Of Habit was my entry into Exodus as a full on fan. It bugs me this record gets shit on by band members involved with it from time to time. If it wasn't for FOH, I wouldn't be on Zetro's page today. I praise the record & always will. Thank you for the music you have given us all these years!
It's a great record, never understood the hate. Songwriting is as good as anything they did. OK, maybe it's not as thrashy but whio cares. If it's metal, it's alright.
It didnt really notice the music so much first time Mainly the production. When track.3 came on it was so over the top. I agree with what zetro said about the first track. Maybe its the bitter lyrics that take the shine off it.
I posted this story on the net sometime back but it's defintely relevant here.Been a big fan since Bonded by Blood and always will love Exodus.Me and 2 friends went to see them in Santa Cruz,Ca on the force of habit tour. They crushed it as usual.Afterward we invited the band to our motel room to hang and party.Yeah right we thought, what are the odds?Well that night a big tour bus rolls into the parking lot and lo and behold it was Exodus! We were giddy with excitement. They invited us on the bus and everyone was very cool and hospitable.Afterward me and friends plus Zetro and rick walked around town finding random parties.Rick was on acid and asked me to partake but I did'nt.Wish I did now,oh well.Zetro was smoking all of us out with Nor.Cali dank. They ended up staying the night and chillin.Great night it was.Force of Habit to me is still a killer album.Thanx for this segment Zet.Cant wait for the new album!!!
This is one of my favorite Exodus albums. The lyrics really talk to the youth of the 90's. It was slower, but always super thrashy, talking about different aspects of how life is tough. I've been listening to the tape nonstop recently.
Force of Habit is an unsung masterpiece of an album, and one of the band's greatest achievements, no doubt about that. It's certainly not the "heaviest" record they ever made, but the sheer composition, focused songwriting, melodies, harmonies, most amazing, original, intricate riffs and solos Gary and Rick EVER did...fucking phenomenal and utterly unforgettable piece of work, regardless of genre. Unique thrash-blues hybrid that no one of their contemporaries ever dared to attempt. In fact, Metallica later attempted something similar with their trendhopping Load-Reload fiasco, but hey, Lars, James, boys, THIS IS HOW ITS DONE! . Zetro no doubt has a personal grudge against it, i understand, it was a product of darkest times for metal bands, but his work here is fantastic nonetheless. Even acknowledging that, i cant get the disdain for Count your Blessings - to me, it's one of the best Exodus tracks ever. Utterly original menacing riffs, harmonies and solos are mindblowing here! The chorus is especially memorable, with its unusually ominous harmonic vibe. Exodus now definitely needs more subtly infectious, understated chuggers like this. To me, this album is definitely one of the greatest underdogs in the rock'n'roll world at large, i kid you not.
You should've talked history on this one... Why Robbie left and how it came to be. How Rick and Gary recorded the guitars, Gary's classical piece outro on count your blessings etc.
Some people compare this album to Metallica's self titled album, which I don't fully agree with. Because this one is way more thrash metal. Songs like "Fuel For The Fire", "Count Your Blessings" and most of all "Feeding Time at the Zoo" all have really thrashy riffs and fast tempos! My favorite song is actually "Count Your Blessings", it's a great melodic thrash metal song and isn't too far off from the Exodus formula in my opinion. For example that song thrashes way more than songs like the title track, "Me, Myself & I" and "Good Day to Die" (second best song on the album). Must be the lyrics and vocals that Zetro dislikes with "Count Your Blessings" because the riffs and solos are perfect on that track! \,,/ Great album, one of my favorites by Exodus!
Great episode. Appreciate your honesty on force of habit Zet, I actually really like the album, some really awesome songs on there, I love thorn in my side, fuel for the fire, architect of pain and a good day to die. Oh and feeding time at the zoo is epic 😁🤘 looking forward to the tempo of the damned episode - my favourite Exodus album 🖤 cheers Zet and Walt! 🤘
Been looking forward to this episode for a long time. I think Zet underestimates how much the fans appreciate this album. It has definitely "grown" on me more than any other Exodus album over the years.
I really appreciate you tackling such a heavy and personal subject on Good Day To Die. Putting life's tragedies into your art is some of the best catharsis. Thanks for this little Zetro-spective.
I didn't know anything about this albums background when I bought it in 92. I just knew I liked it. I don't care if it was supposed to be refined or whatever. All I knew was that I loved force of habit, thorn in my side, and that I still feel Today is a Good Day to Die is one of my all time favorites. I even had to go to my local record store in Erie PA to have them special order it for me on cd after I wore out the tape.
Steve, I go way back with you guys since 87 and Exodus second record. I knew you were from Legacy but never heard that then. I love that you’re doing this and you’re doing a great job on this Keep the great work up.
Rick always had some of his unique melodies, crazy blues tones and then some of his signature with a sad-happy ending. Ever since I started listening to Exodus, in 1988, I've always loved Gary's riffs and Rick's solos... In 1992, in Belgrade, Serbia, I bought the cassette "Force of Habit", and my girlfriend bought Pantera's "Vulgar"... .'' album. ''Force...............'' is an absolute masterpiece and I don't care what others think about it.
I remember walking around my town listening to the exodus discography and feeding time came on and people thought I was crazy because I was dying of laughter due to the into.
I love that Album! GOOD DAY TO DIE is one of my alltime Favorite Exodus Songs! You should play this Song live on the next Tour, maybe in 2021! Cheers from Germany!
I first listened to Thorn in My Side in 2018 and loved it. Didn't care for the rest of the album at the time. Then in September 2021, I had to drive 44 tonne lorries from Manchester to Scotland and needed something new to listen to so I gave the rest of the album a chance. Before long, Me, Myself and I, Fuel for the Fire, Architect of Pain, When it Rains... became my favourite songs, along with Good Day to Die, One Foot in the Grave, Feeding Time. Not wild on the covers but the majority of the album is really good. The H Team were on fire, Zet, I love your vocals anyway, Mike Butler was a solid bassist and John Tempesta? What a legend of a drummer!
Got to say that I saw you guys touring in support of Force of Habit. D. R. I. opening and Body Count was headlining. I went to the show to see Exodus. You prayed a heavy set. It was fucking loud. I was there in the front row with Gary right across from me. Show was at a joint called Baity’s in Winston Salem, NC.
Damn Zet, you caught me by surprise. Count your Blessings is probably one of my faves on this album, which I really love too. I wish y'all would play some of that stuff live!
Oh man Jerky Boys! Exodus and Jerky Boys was my childhood love ya Zetro! I met you on the Headbanger's Ball Tour and you came out of the tour bus saying were going to the super bowl!
Force of Habit is such an underrated Album, Exodus actually knocked it out of the park with what they had been tasked with, working to fuse the then trend of grunge with more groove metal flavoring really makes it quite a stand out.
I'm new to exodus and this channel is awesome. My favorite album so far is Fabulous Disaster, I think that's everyones favorite lol. I'm not new to thrash at all but I'm new to exodus, I skipped them for some reason, I'm glad I decided to give them a try. They KICK ASS
There are times for BBB, the are times to thrash to Tempo, but there are definitely lots of times to groove to Force Of Habit. It showed what Exodus could do despite the 90's mainstream. Happy Holidays to you guys too Zet! Looking forward to the Tempo episode.
Architect of Pain is a MASTERPIECE. Please add it to the set list!! Guitar solo is fucking incredible. Also, the mix on this album is CRUSHING. Personally my ideal guitar tone
I liked it then and I like it nowadays. Even bought new version with those two bonus tracks. Too bad they didn't tour in Europe 'cause I checked some of their shows from UA-cam and they played a lots of these songs live. And they were crushing. At that time Exodus was perfect support act for Black Sabbath. It would be nice to hear more about making the album - I remember MTV special - and changes in lineup. 🤘😷✌️
I really like this album. The guitar solos and drumming really shine. "Architect of Pain", "Good Day to Die", and "Thorn in my Side" are Exodus masterpieces. Other tracks have some strong music as well but are brought down by goofy lyrics. The cover art is pure garbage and the cover songs would've been better off as B-sides. I think with better artwork, using the original logo, and having a shorter album of only the best 8 songs that people would think more fondly of this album.
I actually like the artwork on Force. I also like the art for BBB and Tempo. The only one I didn't like was BIBO. WTF was that cringy crap? Dukes era artwork was pretty crap too.
Solid episode, Z. Would of liked to have heard more about the legend behind that artwork. I got so much shit from my friends back in the day about my "interpretation" of that album cover. Hashtag relentless. 😁😂🤣⛧🤘
"Feeding Time at the Zoo" was the first Exodus song I ever heard, when this album first came out. I always wondered whether they got the intro from somewhere or made it themselves, and when I met Zetro in Seattle in 2013 I completely forgot to ask him about it. Sounds like they must have made it for the album. Great track, and there's plenty to like about this album. Don't care much for the covers, though "Pump It Up" somehow worked, at least better than "Bitch" and "Low Rider" previously. Take those out along with a few of the ones Zetro didn't care for, add another fast one, and it would be legendary.
I met Zetro at the Holiday Star parking lot in Merrillville, IN. He was great to me. Told me Rick and Gary were across the road at Guitar Center along with Tony Iommi and Geezer. Drove across the road and the car with Tony and Geezer were coming back. Saw Gary and Rick. I was wearing an old Metallica shirt and told them I thought Metallica’s new album sucked. I think they thought I said Force sucked because they gave me dirty looks. Lol. Good times!
Zet, I saw Exodus on the Body Count tour in Poughkeepsie, NY at The Chance Theatre. I believe you guys were denied to stay at the local hotel because of the controversy with Body Count. It was in the winter with snow and heard you guys created a huge snowball and launched it at the hotel. Maybe this is just urban legend but would love to know.
Hahaha seeing you cringe over some of the material is hilarious! Also how you spent so much money on that frankly stupid record cover is classic! I was like 16 or so when I was browsing through some used cd's shelf and saw the cover and I was like wait... what? Is this the real Exodus or is it some peculiar Bob Marley thing. I had do look at the band pictures to be sure. I decided to pick it up and the guy at the counter who really didn't look like much of a metalhead was like "Oh cool this album has a really good song on it, It's called Good Day To Die". I went home a put it on and not really knowing what to expect but I got hooked on it. I totally get why you would have a hard time with it and all the BS at the time. As a fan however, discovering it sort of like a lost gem that most people didn't know or care about it probably made me more forgiving towards it in some ways. Still the guitar playing is super sick all the way through. To me it's just kinda cool listening to the band letting some of the hard rock roots shine through. I feel like that I guess more playful side of the band goes back to the War cover and Ted Nugent and what not anyways so it wasn't completely out of the blue. Less aggressive for sure but also has kind of a don't give a shit-attitude to it in a sense that I find charming. Best thing about it is definitely the H-team dual axe attack though, sick solos! I've stolen a bunch of licks from it for sure. The tracks I come back to the most would be Thorn, Me, Myself & I, Fuel, Blessings (killer riffs come on Zet, hehe), Architect, Rain, Good day and Feeding Time for sure! In the end I love this version Exodus for what it is and I've blasted this one a lot! Would have been fun to hear how you ended up with Butler on the 4 strings though.
Great episode. I pretty much agree with Zetro on the track by track, though I can at least tolerate the lesser songs these days. Force of Habit was my first Exodus album. Came out shortly before my 14th birthday. Not what I was looking for at the time, I wanted heavier, though I’ve always loved Architect of Pain. Eventually discovered Bonded By Blood due to it making best of lists and loved that album instantly. For years I thought Exodus were a Baloff band. It wasn’t until Tempo of the Damned, 12 years later, where I decided to give all the past Zetro albums a chance. Tempo blows me away and it was after hearing that album when I finally checked out Impact and Pleasures, which I love. So yeah, a very wrong first impression of Exodus. The 90’s were a strange time for Metal and being an American teen during that time soaking this stuff up. But yes, this album delayed a deeper Exodus fandom I now have. Deep “Good Day to Die” story - wow!
One of my favorite Exodus albums. I never got the whole backlash bullshit. Minus the cover songs aka Bitch and Pump it Up, I loved it. The 2 cover songs were useless.
I bought Force of Habit the week it came out...Zets vox are great on that one! It's deceptively crushingly heavy...don't judge it by the cover tunes...Love this album, even though some don't for their own valid reasons...Time to revisit it folks!
i like when bands include songs from albums that are not the most popular. FOH has some good songs like zet mentioned and they should certainley add a song from it to their live set
I saw Exodus for this tour! They opened for Body Count (Cop Killer tour) at the legendary L'Amour in Brooklyn in December of 1992. DRI & Pro-Pain also played. Crazy/sick show/lineup! Any memories of this show and/or tour?
Even at their worst Exodus reigns supreme, i love Force of Habit imo it actually helps ALOT to just speed up the songs. Some of Zet’s dislikes are my fav songs off the album 😭😭
Thanks for the interview and bringing some light behind the stories (sad story about your friend committing suicide). I think it's not a bad record, but also not flawless. For me, I like it and put in my player regulary but skip some songs. I'm sure it would be really appreciated by a lot of fans to put a song of this record once in while in the setlist. I think could work live better. What's wrong with Count your Blessings? Great and heavy guitar riff and a beautiful accoustic fade out. One of my favorites of this record.
I listened to this album again just a few days before this appeared on the vault. I can see why Zetro doesn't care for it. It's not so much that it's a bad album, it's just that it's not exactly what you want or expect from Exodus.
On another note, listening to a lot of Exodus lately, I never noticed how similar Zetro and Bobby Blitz from Overkill sound! There's a lot of similarities, but enough differences to make it interesting. It got me to thinking what it might be like if Zetro sang Overkill songs and Blitz sang Exodus songs. Could be cool! Also, get Bobby in the vault. I would love to see that and a lot of other people would too. Two old road dogs trading war stories for an hour or so!
Really interesting to hear the story of this record. At the time I remember thinking it was a cynical attempt by the band to go grunge/alternative. But clearly they were completely forced into it by the record company and they had no choice. Glad they eventually got back to their best a few years later with Tempo....
It’s an okay album with some good songs. I think Steve’s assessment is fair. I was surprised that Steve likes Architect of Pain as much but glad to hear it. I do listen to it from time to time and skip a few songs but enjoy it overall.
Cool video even if I am not a fan of this album, I still like to hear about the history of Exodus. Will you talk about albums you weren't on like the live album Another Lesson in Violence?
Would be great to see me myself and i performed live again (and anything from the impact album too). I wonder if tom is put off because he wasnt part of the original recording. i also love count your blessings and climb before the fall. Yes they are very different to say toxic waltz but i think variety is good.
Force of Habit had some great stuff on it for sure. Production was great for it's time as well. Feeding Time holds up to any Exodus song imo. Also, Jerky Boys were hilarious, but how about those Mark Knopfler calls...
I have been a huge fan of "Force of Habit" album and I can't believe people hate this album. It's great. The only weak point is perhaps its sound. I would've loved if it sounded kind of like black album from Metallica or at least stronger than it does. Like Fabolous Disaster actually has better sound than Impact or Habit. That being said it still sounds great to me. There are some songs on that album that are some of my favorite Exodus have ever done. I am biased because that was the first Exodus album I've ever heard and I know it's kind of different to what they've usually done, but nonetheless - Fuel For The Fire, One Foot In The Grave, Good Day To Die, Count Your Blessings are such great songs. Also I think The H Team did some of their best solos ever on this album.
It may be some peoples favorite but it sure as hell ain't mine but it does have a few good songs. I got into exodus in 1987 with pleasures of the flesh which is my favorite. Then they gave us fabulous disaster and then impact which is great so I was pumped and then came force which sucked. I was first day buyer I went home popped it into my tape deck and got ready to thrash. Needless to say that never happened I was like what the hell oh no they pulled a metallica but I kept listening and after I was done I said well that's something I wouldn't be listening to any more but I kept it for my collection. Exodus is my favorite thrash band so to get this flop album was a disappointed for sure and I wasn't the only one all the metalheads at school agreed. Then they gave us tempo and that was a monster of an album great comeback. Your right Zetro it sucks your not alone. Exodus rules after force of habit exodus hasn't made a bad album love all their albums except for force of habit record. Hey just my opinion it sucks.
Architect of pain is a masterpiece. Thorn in my side is classic Exodus, Good day to Die is another great tune. The covers in my opinion were kinda shitty, but I didn't care for the originals either so.. This album was played at many o keg parties, and bong sessions. It stands up and some of these should be played live. Good day to Die literally saved my life I was really depressed and just lost one of my best friends and the lyrics made me think twice about things. 🤘🤘🤘 3 outta 5 horns
@@BigboiiTone i don't think it's that it's too glossy. Just a couple of covers with are great originals in my opinion. Just a different feel altogether on this album. It's just as good as the others i feel. I'm glad they don't stay the same. That is quite boring for me. :)
I like all the Exodus songs on this album. Really different style for them but doesn't compromise on the riffs. It's the covers I didn't like as much. I liked the covers on Fabulous Disaster though
Love the guitar playing on Force Of Habit. Rick Hunolt really shines.
Best solos I've ever heard
"Feeding time at the zoo"...Best song on the album!!!!
That is an awesome fucking song.
Freding.... and When rain it's pours..... Killer riffs and killer groove

100%. Force of Habit is superior to most of new material they’ve put out 2004 onward.

At that time Exodus was perfect support act for Black Sabbath. It would be nice to hear more about making the album - I remember MTV special - and changes in lineup. 🤘😷✌️
Feeding time at the zoo is the best Exodus song with a fantastic intro. Love the album and it is my second favourite after Fabulous disaster.
My fav on this one is Feeding time at the zoo too. That thrashy aproach is just so fucking Exodus!
Especially the solos are great
@@WALDENSOFTWARE Yeah, the Force of Habit art is fantastic. Iconic work by Ralph Steadman.
@@mikemars2112 Yeah! Would be cool to have my album signed by, not only the band, but Ralph Steadman as well 🤘.
FINALLY!!!! I've been waiting for this sooo long!
Solid episode, Z. Would of liked to have heard more about the legend behind that artwork. I got so much shit from my friends back in the day about my "interpretation" of that album cover. Hashtag relentless. 😁😂🤣⛧🤘
What is it about the cover art?
I can’t see f*ck all...
An eye? A nose?
Lol. Good times!
Would have to listen again. I remember struggling to like it when I got the newly formatted compact disc at the time.
Good day to die is one of my favorite songs from Exodus, i just like your vocal on that one :D
Would love to have the hat Zetro is rockin here!
Love f,o,h. Great album.
I love the zoo and telepathetic. Fuel for the fire too 🔥
Hahaha seeing you cringe over some of the material is hilarious!
I've done the 200 doors up a couple flights. I feel you brother.
I love force of habit, really bluesy and heavy
i like when bands include songs from albums that are not the most popular. FOH has some good songs like zet mentioned and they should certainley add a song from it to their live set
Force of Habit is really good! They should play live some songs off that one!!
I saw Exodus for this tour! They opened for Body Count (Cop Killer tour) at the legendary L'Amour in Brooklyn in December of 1992. DRI & Pro-Pain also played. Crazy/sick show/lineup! Any memories of this show and/or tour?
i would definitely like to hear about the Tenet album!
I think that one was covered in Glen Avelais' episode.🤔
some great tunes on the album, favourites have to be Architect of pain, good day to die and force of habbit
Even at their worst Exodus reigns supreme, i love Force of Habit imo it actually helps ALOT to just speed up the songs. Some of Zet’s dislikes are my fav songs off the album 😭😭
A primo release right there 👍
Thanks for the interview and bringing some light behind the stories (sad story about your friend committing suicide).
One good song.
I listened to this album again just a few days before this appeared on the vault. I can see why Zetro doesn't care for it. It's not so much that it's a bad album, it's just that it's not exactly what you want or expect from Exodus.
I think that Good Day To Die and Thorn In My Side should rotate on the setlist ... same to some Impact songs
Me, Myself and I is an awesome song
This explains alot ... great fucking video zetro ... awesome episode
I was listening to force of habit today. Great fuckin record.
It’s an okay album with some good songs. I think Steve’s assessment is fair. I was surprised that Steve likes Architect of Pain as much but glad to hear it. I do listen to it from time to time and skip a few songs but enjoy it overall.
Prank phone calls....how about Joe & Larry?
Cool video even if I am not a fan of this album, I still like to hear about the history of Exodus. Will you talk about albums you weren't on like the live album Another Lesson in Violence?
Would be great to see me myself and i performed live again (and anything from the impact album too). I wonder if tom is put off because he wasnt part of the original recording. i also love count your blessings and climb before the fall. Yes they are very different to say toxic waltz but i think variety is good.
Why did Rob Mckillop leave the band?
Pretty sure Rob left cause of family issues
Force of Habit had some great stuff on it for sure. Production was great for it's time as well. Feeding Time holds up to any Exodus song imo. Also, Jerky Boys were hilarious, but how about those Mark Knopfler calls...
this album is different but I love it
I have been a huge fan of "Force of Habit" album and I can't believe people hate this album.
Good Day To Die is a beast!!!
Walt that beard is the shit!
I know your new album is a banger
Steve, quite frankly I fucking detested that record and what Exodus stood for. To me it’s your Cold Lake
Steve.lets Andy airborne in your Show please!
I like some tracks of this:
Thorn in my side
Me myself and I
Count your blessings
Feedding time at the zoo
Telephatic
Architect of pain
This is a cool album. Not sure why it get criticism :/
I agree with Souza being uncomfortable with the more "commercial" sound but i also agree with you. It's really underrated
@@BigboiiTone i don't think it's that it's too glossy. Just a couple of covers with are great originals in my opinion. Just a different feel altogether on this album. It's just as good as the others i feel. I'm glad they don't stay the same. That is quite boring for me.
:)
Crushing!!!
This album was good for me as I got off meth. Really helped me
Force of habit and good day to die
Really like Me,Myself and I
If anybody considers this their favorite Exodus then they don't even Know Exodus!
that beard is furocious! lol lookin good guys!
I like all the Exodus songs on this album. Really different style for them but doesn't compromise on the riffs. It's the covers I didn't like as much.
I liked the covers on Fabulous Disaster though
